Mayock likes DT Floyd as Raiders top pick

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said in a national conference call he thought Florida defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd could be a potential target for the Raiders with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft.

Mayock, available in advance of this week’s NFL scouting combine, said he liked Floyd (6-foot-3, 303 pounds) ahead of Utah’s Star Lotulelei (6-4, 325), a player who heading into the combine is considered to be more of a top 10 pick than Floyd on most lists.

“Oakland is in a very good place. They need D-linemen, and they can get one in this draft. This kid from the University of Florida, Sharrif Floyd, he’s the prototypical three-technique in this draft and I think he’s going to be a big-time impact player that people don’t know about,” Mayock said. “I’ve got him rated higher than the Utah kid and he’s a natural at what they do.”

Defensive tackle Richard Seymour is an unrestricted free agent, as is injury-replacement in the starting lineup, Desmond Bryant. Starter Tommy Kelly is no lock to return because of a high salary cap number.

The Raiders are presently without picks in the second and fifth rounds because of trades for Carson Palmer and Aaron Curry in 2011. They’ve added a second seventh-round pick in the Louis Murphy deal to Carolina and also will probably receive a compensatory pick or picks by the time the draft takes place.

While trading the No. 3 overall pick is no doubt enticing, and would potentially enable the Raiders to recoup the lost picks, it may be easier said than done.

Mayock said the 2013 draft is exceptionally deep because of a strong junior class, but not particularly top heavy.

“I think the fifth pick in the draft and the 25th pick are very similar,” Mayock said.

Mayock, who correctly forecast the Raiders selection of Darrius Heyward-Bey in 2009 well in advance of the draft based on the way Al Davis leaned heavily on size, strength and speed, said the organization has changed the way it identifies talent in the Reggie McKenzie-Dennis Allen era.

“I think there’s a very radical divergence from the past Raider way,” Mayock said. “I don’t mean that positively or negatively. I just mean different. I like where Reggie and Dennis are headed. Reggie comes from Green Bay. In Green Bay, Ted Thompson’s been a guy that grinds. He’s out in the field all the time. He’s a true old-school evaluator, where h wants a football player first and an athlete second, and I think Mr. Davis was a little bit the opposite.

“He wanted that athlete first and that he thought he could mold into a football player.”

Mayock also sees four offensive linemen as being players who could go in the top three _ Texas A&M tackle Luke Joekel, Central Michigan tackle Eric Fisher, Alabama guard Chance Warmack and North Carolina guard Jonathan Cooper.

The Raiders could use an instant starter at either at right tackle, where Khalif Barnes is a free agent, or either guard spot, where Mike Brisiel was brought in because of his familiarity with the zone bocking scheme and Cooper Carlisle is a free agent.

Ansah is having the best offseason/postseason, whatever you call this process for college players, of any player.

But you have to remember, he is new to the game, had major effort issues in college games and his legendary collegiate coached stressed the need to surround him with the “right people” post college.

Major boom or bust with him. Like off the charts major.

    ——————————-

I think that’s pretty fair to say.

My thing is there’s no QB or WR to take at 3. We’re not desperate for a LT. I’m not sold on Floyd at 3. Star’s a possibility for me, but what about the health issues.

And all of the elite pass rushers — JJ Watt, Aldon Smith, Demarcus Ware, JPP, etc — are exceptional athletes. Not many technicians who are difference-makers as pass rushers these days.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

So what do u wanna do?? which will get us better faster if the Raiders hit on a 1st round draft pick

Geno Smith.. or Ziggy Ansah?? or Eric Fisher?

  • Just Fire Baby

My thing is there’s no QB or WR to take at 3.

    **************************

I think Geno is at the top of our board.

When asked who he interviewed with, first team out of his mouth was Raiders. All the twitter talk is that the Raiders love him.

New GM’s want their own QB and HC, right or wrong.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

BTW it was rumored a month ago Mckenzie was high on JUSTIN HUTNER out of Tennesse.. is to be a mid 2nd to early 3rd round pick.

Scouts say had an off year.. but no question the talent is there.. 6ft 4 with tremendous leaping ability.. big RZ target .. dropped ball this year.. but scouts said he has good hands

  • xraided

    JFB

that’s all i’ve been reading about as well.

what do you really think they’re going to do with Carson then? release? a trade before/during/after the draft?

Reggie would have to feel pretty damn secure about his future here to make that pick. To me QB is not a position WE SHOULD FOCUS ON DRAFTING EARLY THIS YEAR.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

I bet carson will take a pay cut.. then will try to trade him.. will be a better contract to trade come draft day

  • xraided

if someone would bite on Carson for a 2nd rounder(the Jags maybe? a high second round pick would be key) … that would be incredible!

  • Just Fire Baby

When I watched some of the WR drills, that Rodney Smith from FSU looked intriguing as a late round pick.

He looked like a Chaz Schilens, minus the lip liner and he didn’t get hurt running.

  • xraided

well Chris there’s no sure thing in this draft. maybe Warmack, that’s about it. i would love that pick as well. people would laugh at us for taking an OG so high.. but he’ll anchor whichever spot for a decade… and our golden haired hero and DMC will both have a solid line to work with.

  • Just Fire Baby

what do you really think they’re going to do with Carson then? release? a trade before/during/after the draft?

    ******************************

If we draft Smith, they will obviously try to trade him.

I don’t think we will get a team to commit until the 2nd round is over, or almost over (teams at the end of the round don’t need QB’s).

Could be a nice Saturday morning suprise!!!!

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

I feel Geno smith is in the running to be the Raider pick. Its either GENO, Pass rusher or trade back.

    bet on that

  • xraided

if he restructures in the next couple of weeks … i think a team would commit a 2nd rounder and then some!

right before the draft would be best. that way teams that want Geno don’t have much time to scramble… although Jacksonville’s ring will be ringing off the hook.

although if i keep thinking about it, you’re right. it would probably be after the fact. i just want a top TE prospect to go with Geno dmnit!

  • Priesttj12

I don’t know all the stats ALLDAY as you posted I’m not really worried about Ansah’s stats truthfullu speaking. I wanted to see his measurements to see if they validated what I saw on film and they more than did that. I don’t read stats like you guys do because I believe stats jsut don’t tell the story truthfully. Thye do give you some perameters and a gage as to what you might be getting.

I knwo what I saw on film with Ansah his stats be damned because the kid doesn’t knwo how to play yet. I saw a kid move like a cat at 270lbs. he closed on the ballcarrier with ease and made the play and there wasn’t anyone that could stop him. The only thing they could do is run away from him. He was just that dominant and when I learned how green this kid is it was something I’ve personally never seen before I couldn’t believe my eyes what he was doing aganist the top talent in this draft. He was just better than anyone on the field. You don’t ARGUE with that you don’t QUESTION it you just PRAY you can get it……………….period

  • xraided

    *phone will be ringing

  • Just Fire Baby

right before the draft would be best.

    ***************************

I think QB needy teams will wait and see how the first 2 rounds go first before giving up picks for him.

A like the Fauria guy from UCLA as a good young TE prospect. Not sure how he is doing in the combine.

  • Priesttj12

To put it in baseball terms, if you see a kid hitting tape measure shots over the fence and he’s green as grass and hasn’t had proper coaching and he runs like a deer and has great hand eye coordination. You don’t go YEAH BUT!!

If you see a raw Bo Jackson just needs coaching you don’t go YEAH BUT!!

WHen you see talent like that you don’t question it the only thing you do is make sure he loves what he’d doing and he wants to get better. That’s it!………….period

  • Just Fire Baby

ease and made the play and there wasn’t anyone that could stop him.

    ****************************

Curious, are you just talking about the Senior Bowl?

He wasn’t that good during the season, granted he was inexperienced and all.

I thought the other BYU DE was much better in their bowl game and other big games.

  • xraided

i mentioned the Jags because they probably won’t draft another QB again.. even in the 2nd or 3rd(should Manuel or Bray be there for instance)… they’re going to look at someone like Palmer to bring along Weeden(they are the same type of QB)

Fauria… i don’t remember seeing him at the combine. yea some big athletic TE that can lay a block on a LB or SS would be nice.

    yea

  • DJ Johnny

Teo’s a good guy I think, but the excuses for/from him just keep comin’.

First, the Alabama game where the long layoff between games is cited…even though everyone had the same layoff, now in regard to the less than stellar performance at the Combine Teo is blaming the fact “it was the end of a long day” as if none of the others out there had a long day too. Not good for him.

He seems like a real good kid though and I can’t help but feel bad for him.

  • xraided

Teo put it on himself. he’s a head case. who makes up a story like that?! when you’re a huge prospect that’s about to make multi millions doing what you love? BASKET CASE! with that said, if he fell to the 2nd round, he’ll be the first pick of the 2nd day.

  • xraided

    grr -Weeden +Gabbert

  • Just Fire Baby

Listening to Teo and that Tuisosoppo kid talk, just tells me these Hawaiin’s need to get off the island a little more.

Just incredibly weird, sheltered, naive people.

  • http://raiders.com 00raiders00

I’d would be stupid to trade Palmer. We need more experienced players who know how to play football in spite of our slop patched hastily put together coaching staff. Dump all the draft picks for seasoned vets. Draft picks are no guarantee of a damn thing. Not one. Especially ours.

Of course trading Palmer does make sense if we want another 10 years of suckness. After all, Reggie let Bush walk and we cut our win total in half from last year. Yeah. That makes a lot of damned sense. 2-14 baby. Just digress.

Coaches or players? Probably both. My insider over in Green Bay told me they put locks on their dumpsters now. At least he issued the directive to fire knapp.

Too bad,you guys actually had some good football talk going on there for a while.

“Lose, lose, lose for next yr’s better news”

    “Drown for the clown”

    “0 and 16 is a good thing”

    “Falter for Bridgewater”

“We’re in no hurry, so lose and don’t worry”.

“Continue to suck…cuz no one gives a…..k”

“Don’t try to win cuz in 10 yr’s we can begin”.

  • xraided

Lefty haha! it fades quickly on this board.

  • xraided

oh yea 00 get all veteran’s. tell that to SEA with the picks of Wagner then Wilson kid. Geno is on the same level as he is undoubtedly.

  • DJ Johnny

“Be at your worst, so you can draft first”

“Make us all sick…for the # 1 pick”

“Let the league laugh…we’ll pick high in the draft”

  • Gdog

Ohh good gawd. Players take pay cuts to STAY with the team. There is no way CP or his agent is stupid enough to have language in the contract making it at all easy for the Raiders to trade him.

If you hate CP, hope we simply cut him and eat the 9 mil and accept NOTHING in return.

Thats your only choice. Get real please… sick of seeing moronic stuff like this…

  • Gdog

ahhh the wise guys are pining for another “flavor of the week” defensive stud along with trading CP!

    I am out…

  • DJ Johnny

Yes. Promise Palmer you’ll get some top stud receiver to lure him into agreeing to a massive pay cut..then trade him at that price so can’t make any more money, then kidnap his kids and charge a high ransom to get em back and use that money towards a shiny new toy QB.

Free agents around the league would start flocking to Oakland.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Im with ya priestjs.. even mayock said Ansah and Jordan two most explosive guys in the draft with upside.

Mayock was not even impressed with Bjorn Werner said he was an early 2nd round pick. Said would be a lesser version of Chris Long.

  • Scourge

As a late-round pick or UDFA, I would like to suggest Penn State’s Matt Stankiewitch. Little Wiz helped him out a lot in preparing for the combine. I’ve heard locally that Wiz and he are roommates in State College during the off-season. A good blue-collar kind of guy who can play center well and is more than willing to play guard as well. Just a thought.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Damontre Moore, DE, Texas A&M: Moore’s pedestrian workout made him one of the biggest disappointments of the combine. He mustered just 12 reps on the bench press, a dismal showing that he followed with a 4.95-second 40-yard dash. For a 6-4, 245-pound defensive end with pass-rushing prowess, those numbers were abysmal in every regard. Most importantly, they suggested that Moore was unprepared for the workout, which is a major red flag for scouts wondering if they can count on him to become an immediate difference-maker at the next level.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

That was from bucky brook of nfl.com

  • DJ Johnny

    Scourge,

That’s as good as any UDFA ideas i’ve heard thus far.

That is where Reggie is said to excel….finding those unheralded gems.

Consider that this guy is being labeled as going in unprepared for something that ends up being the difference of millions of dollars and it’s a no-brainer. Stay away! If you can’t come in prepared for the combine, how can you be counted upon to be prepared for the season? Puke. Pass on this guy.

My random thoughts on the possibilities. Featuring zero facts to back up anything.

    Geno-Worst case scenario to me.
    Ansah-Sure, why not?
    Jordan-Sure, why not?
Warmack-Would love it. Even at #3.
Joeckel-If we’re drafting O-Lineman who will probably not be playing LT, I’d rather go with Warmack.
    That other OT-See Joeckel.
    Werner-Yawn, fine I guess.
    Star-Eeek. Hope this works.
    Milliner-I guess that could work.
Floyd-Meh. Don’t love it or hate it.
Trade the #3 straight up for the Jags or Cards 1st next year-Unrealistic, incredibly risky and yet would take it in a heart beat (no offense Star).
Whoever I missed-Probably not worth remembering.

    There, that was useless.

  • Purvisman/Intrepid/Eternal Optimist

Not being an agent, lawyer, or GM this is pure speculation but, I would assume that during the restructuring talks with Palmer last year the possibility of him having a good year on a team that didn’t, had to have occured to Reggie, Palmer’s agent or Palmer himself. Probably all three. If it didn’t, Palmer needs a new agent and we got problem’s with Reggie.
If there’s no language in his contract addressing this, I gotta believe there’s an understanding between the parties involved.
I doubt it’s an adversarial situation and may well already be penciled in. We just don’t know about it.

DJJ, thanks! While, as a Penn Stater, I’m biased, I believe this guy did a great job anchoring the school’s offensive line this year. Many folks had us having a really bad season, with the problems that preceded the season and the resultant transfer of some first-team players. But they got together and had a good, winning season beyond all estimates. Matt Stankiewitch was on of those guys who stepped up and provided leadership.
