Report: Raiders talking with Holmgren about job

By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, February 26th, 2013 at 2:49 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Long-time Packers and Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren is the latest candidate to surface in the Raiders search for an established football person to assume a leadership role.

ESPN cited two unnamed sources as saying the two sides have spoken about the prospect of Holmgren joining the Raiders in some capacity.

Zak Gilbert, the Raiders director of media relations, issued the following statement: “As a general policy, the Raiders don’t comment on personnel matters, so the team isn’t able to confirm or deny the report. If the organization has more to say in the future, I will let you know.”

Holmgren most recently was with the Cleveland Browns as their team president until he stepped down late last season. He and current Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie worked together when they were with the Packers.
In recent months, the Raiders reportedly interviewed Ray Anderson, the league’s senior vice president of football operations.

stars the best dt prospect since suh, know one can handle him one on one free’s up everyone else to make a play, and he plays nasty/dominates good competition. moore it turns out is slow. who else do you want geno? a short guard Warmack? Joeckel when we already have a LT?
    ————————-
I’ve never been high on Moore and have always seen Geno as somewhat of a worst case scenario for this draft. A dominant guard with great leverage Warmack? Yes please. Joeckel: I wouldn’t jump up and down for a RT but I wouldn’t be disappointed. I’d also be good with diving into the pool of pass rushers. Jordan could be a stud for instance. I don’t hate Star, I just don’t see him as anything more than just another guy at the top of a crapshoot top-weak draft.

    ^^^^^^^^^
In a crap shoot draft, than guys like Jordan, Star and even Ansah should be looked at. Those are guys with solid upside.

Raiders need to have their own doctors look at Star’s condition.

I find it weird that Star’s heart condition comes up during Combine, but was NEVER mentioned before.

So this draft class was considered a strong class for qbs before the season with barkley and bray wilson and jones. They all fell off and struggled to keep thier billing. Then geno smith contiued doing what he has done his whole carrer at wvu, carry the team and post huge numbers.

Geno’s performance and total body of work for his college career has propelled him to the top of the pack, his combine performance only strengthened his stock.

yet this class is now called ‘weak”.

enter ej manual, a guyy that not many rated very highly but after his senior season, and a solid showing at the combine and senior bowl he too is moving up the list.

I posted here quite a long time ago the ej and geno were the the best of the class and i stand by this take.

I find it very interesting that this class is suddenly viewd “weak”.

jones, the tylers, glenon, nasib barkley seem to be the only qbs being regarded in the determination of the class being strong or weak.

Geno and ej have been out standing but they are not able to elevate the status of the draft class?

When cam newton came out the class wasnt considered strong and the debate was should gabbert go first.

last year was considered strong yet griffin wasnt considered by most to be the number 1 luck was. Griffin severely outplayed luck this year and proved that to be false.

It seems that when ever a non white qb is at the top of the board the class is either deemed ‘weak’, or they are down graded and never seen as the clear cut number 1.

The nfl is an good old boys network and the media is also owned by a similar club.

i look forward to a time when qbs are judged for what they do on the field, and are given the respect they deserve.

    ===========================

i personally think jacksonville is going to do what we will most likely try to do IF we don’t retai palmer, and that is bring in a solid free agent or vet (matt moore comes to mind) or they will try and trade for someone like flynn to compete with gabbert n if they fail, or moreso if gabbert fails, they will look for another qb next yr,where the qb class is supposed to be much stronger. you could very well be right though. I just have a hard time seeing a team invest 2 high first round picks on a qb in such a short period. 3 years is usually when u can tell if a kid has it or not. just my opinion. I think they go pass rusher with their first pick and WR with their second. they missed pretty bad on blackmon uness he improves drastically from yr 1 to yr 2.he looked slow out there. his slow 40 time was no lie

We need at least two DB’s in the top 4 rounds to mold.

We need at least one of these three guys from the Corners.. Trufant, POYVER out or ORegon State, or Tyrann Mathieu.

like Mayock said about Tyrann he is not a track or fast guy even though he ran a 4.4.. he is a Pure FOOTBALL PLAYER.. and the kid is fearless he loves to tackle and is a turnover machine. and playmaker

Trufant is a plays aggresive as well and Poyver had 7 ints

We need a few premire College playmakers.. and Austin would be one of then.. GENO is a risk but I trust Reggie and his scouting department who followed this kid for a while.

Would also take a chance in the 4th round if still there on heisman finalist a few yrs ago TYRANN MATHIEU.. The raiders need Playmakers and expolsive guys on OFfense and Defense. If you trade down in the 1st..

Damontre Moore, could be there. Alex Oakfor will be there.. and Tavon Austin in the 20’s.. maybe we can trade with ST. Louis and pick up some good picks.

    this article is ridiculous.

No player should take a pay cut unless he believes that he will have a break out season and raise his value or he is simply out of options.

Players dont get nearly the money that the team gets, and it is their health on the line.

Refusing a pay cut doent make you less than a team player, quitting does.

Refusing a pay cut is simply financial common sense.

Carson and any other player needs to look out for thier own interest not the team.

    3. Oakland Raiders Select

The Pick: QB Geno Smith, West Virginia

The Oakland Raiders’ interest in Geno Smith dates back to the Senior Bowl, where I reported that the team had serious interest in the West Virginia quarterback. Geno’s first meeting at the NFL Scouting Combine was also with the Oakland brass.

The Raiders need a quarterback. With Carson Palmer’s contract a nightmare and Terrelle Pryor untested at the position, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see general manager Reggie McKenzie putting his faith and job security on the line for a new passer who can run Greg Olsen’s offense.

Smith isn’t my No. 3 rated player, in fact he’s No. 10 overall, but with the Raiders having a need at the position they could be willing to over-spend in order to land a franchise quarterback.

Smith has been very pointed in comparing himself to Aaron Rodgers. McKenzie and the Raiders will be hoping that comes true.

Geno Smith is not worth an overall three. That is painfully apparent.

I can see the Geno/Aaron Rodgers comparisions.

Geno seems a tad more athletic, Rodgers had a stronger down the field arm, IMO, coming out.

    Ian,
As for Swope, that would be tremendous, but why wouldn’t he go sooner now with that time. Sounds like a first rounder to me with performance, polished skills and now great timed speed. It’s possible, but I’d be stunned if he’s not gone in the top 50. Could go sooner.

Why is Reggie always associated with IHOP and not Denny’s or a more expensive restaurant?

Has he actually been spotted there?

  137. Just Fire Baby Says:

As much as I would like, I don’t think we will draft a WR early or at all in this draft.

Kenny Stills is my fav of the class, but I think Woods and Hunter could be solid as well.

We may take a late flyer on a guy like Rodney Smith of FSU, but I doubt it.

Criner and Streater will be looked at to improve in their sophmore year.

  138. Just Fire Baby Says:

When a prospect is invited to the draft in NY and the Raiders have a top 5 pick, there has been one telling sign of who the Raiders will select.

When Oakland took JaMarcus and DMC, both players were wearing Silver and Black suits. The jacket and pants were black, and either the shirt, tie, or vest would be silver.

  140. jackasspuria Says:

If Big Al were still around and he saw Milliner run that 4.31 at the combine, we all know who would have been the No. 3 pick.

  141. jackasspuria Says:

How many reps did Honey Badger do on the bench press at the combine?

While benching a certain amount of weight a certain amount of times means little for a defensive back, how’s HB supposed to cover and be physical with tight ends from his safety spot?

Badger did run well though. ESPN’s John Clayton speculating the speed could have vaulted Badger to late second, third round.

  142. KoolKell Says:

Which player at 3 could be immediate starter

Hopefully Reg can work some draft day trades … and I ain’t talkin’ about swapping his side of pancake’s for Raleigh’s side of French toast (though I’d make that move if I were Reg, big French toast fan). No, I mean trading back again and again and again. I’d rather have say three 2nd rounders and no 1s in this draft than the No 3 pick and no 2s.

  145. JLofty Says:

Badger had minimal bench presses. 3 or 4. The guys were teasing him about it. One more straw on the guy’s back…

  146. JLofty Says:

    100% agree Chris….

  147. Just Fire Baby Says:

I personally have said and believe, that Honey Badger will make a Devin Hester like move to offense.

He can’t make any impact with his size, strength and cover skills in the NFL on defense.

Great return man, kick coverer, and will work some trick plays in for him out of the backfield, etc.

  148. KoolKell Says:

Is a college pass rusher gonna come in and handle these LT’s? Doubt it.

  149. Chris in NY Says:

A 170 pound guy benching 225 4 times is not a huge issue for me. He’s got those Polamalu-like instincts. That’s what makes him special.

  150. Just Fire Baby Says:

I personally never was impressed with HB defensively in college. Seemed like his INT’s were thrown right to him, he made his mark in that Oregon game forcing fumbles on a guy who fumbled like 6 times and then was kicked out of school, got a lot of lucky bounces.

He isn’t going to go flying in on NFL WR’s and force a bunch of fumbles, C-Wood is like the best ever at doing that and he would only do it a couple of times a year at best.

  167. jackasspuria Says:

    I have said it before….

If Reggie McKenzie and Co. want a Raiders re-boot, then Carson Palmer has to go.

Start Pryor or draft pick/free agent pickup at QB and move on, for better or worse.

Look, there’s not much on the roster now in terms of helping Palmer succeed right away.

Let him go, give Pryor the starting gig and see where it goes.

If Pryor flops, so be it. At least then, we all know what he is about.

  168. Just Fire Baby Says:

Interesting that the Boston Globe is reporting that New England is said to not be really interested in re-signing Vollmer.

Rather let him walk and give the starting RT gig to Marcus Cannon.

but it doesn’t make sense to be talking with Palmer about restructuring if the plan is to snag Geno.

    ************************

Sure it does, a better contract makes him more tradeable.

We should sell him on whatever we have to get him to take a paycut in “good faith”, then rip that old “good faith” rug right out from under him by shipping his azz to Cleveland or Jacksonville.

    >>>

So you STILL think CP is crazy enough to restructure/take a pay cut, so we can TRADE him?

How would THAT benefit him? It would eliminate all his bargaining power!!

You need to stop huffing glue now son!

One of two things will happen. We cut CP and he becomes a free agent… or he restructures which ensures he is our starter for two more years.

Tyrann Mathieu has been compared to Antoine Winfield.

Not a bad comparison, if you ask me.

Winfield was a beast at Ohio State, then the Buffalo Bills, and now, the Minnesota Vikings. 5-foot-9, 190 and hits like a linebacker.

If Mathieu is that with the hands to boot, a team will take a flier on the Honey Badger.

Also to doghouse players that could’ve helped not to mention trade cut and release players they needed.

Updating an earlier item, ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirms the Raiders are talking to former Browns football “czar” Mike Holmgren about a “prominent” leadership role in the organization.
Oh boy. Both sides declined comment, but didn’t offer denials. Holmgren is reportedly on holiday in Europe. Schefter’s colleague Bill Williamson reported one of Holmgren’s duties would be assisting in the Raiders’ quest for new stadium, but “prominent leadership role” suggests he could have a hand in personnel, as well. Considering Holmgren’s success — or lack thereof — in Cleveland and Seattle’s front offices, that’s not a good thing for a team that’s still reeling from the final few years of the late Al Davis’ rule. ———————————————————————-

When Reggie and DA get this thing sorted and the Raiders are winning again it will be interesting to see who changes their tune and supports them. Both of those guys have great reputations in the league and their peers speak very highly of them. The players do as well.

The lack of understanding regarding what the two of them are doing right now is astonishing to me. They are righting a ship that has been floundering for over a decade, and people have their panties in a bunch because they’re “sick of losing” and it doesn’t fit with their timeline on when it should happen. Never mind that those people haven’t a clue about how to run an NFL franchise in the modern era, and that the guy that sat in the chair before them (rest in peace) wasn’t all the great at it, either.

Respectfully disagree. We absolutely have to have someone that can put pressure on the pocket. Not an easy hole to fill. Power scheme is a lot less of a coordinated dance than zone blocking, and I think our o-line will perform better and struggle a lot less next year with that approach.

As a Raider fan I will gladly say I was wrong about Dennis Allen.

I understand what the Raiders (Reg) are doing, they are cleaning out a house that is overdue.

Doesn’t have to be Moore or Werner, and the player doesn’t have to come off the edge to pressure the pocket. Could be a DT, could be another one of the edge guys, could be Jarvis Jones. The guy could also come from the free agent market.

If they take this approach I sure as hell hope they trade down not once, but several times before drafting. This draft is supposed to be deep with defense, and most of them are 50/50 coin flips statistically anyway.

The question I’d love answered is this: Who is responsible for firing Hue Jackson? Several members of the media have insisted that it was Mark’s call, but Reggie and Mark (on multiple occasions) have pinned that one on Reggie.

Are they lying? Why? If they’re telling the truty and it was Reggie who talked Mark into letting him “get his own guy” — who went 4-12 and clearly did not thrill Mark who openly questioned his passion and then had the 3rd Harbaugh brother joke a few weeks ago — then maybe Mark is so pissed at letting Reggie talk him into firing Hue.

Schneider had the special teams playing well, and Waufle was pretty much the guy that developed and implemented that fearsome d-line rotation in New York. I like what they both did here and wish they were still around.

Our defense w/out McClain and Seymour was the # 2 ranked overall D in the league over the final quarter of the season. 9th in sacks over that time as well.

Our offense is going back to the 2011 scheme before Knapp screwed it all up.

DMAC is in a contract yr. and will ball out.

Ford is back to bolster the kick returns.

We have the 4th easiest schedule in the league.

I’m not saying to get your SB tickets yet, but we can at least entertain the possibility that the defensive surge was more than just a 4 game fluke, and that the same offense (minus that key piece that left for Chi. and took his 3.8 ypc. with him) can return to it’s 2011 form.

Likely? Maybe not. Possibly? Why not.

Bergstrom was McKenzie’s first ever draft pick as a GM.

He will start, by mandate if not performance.

I think he will be fine at RT, he was a All-Conference LT in college.

That will emerge as a very, very solid draft selection.

    ————————

The fact that the 26-year-old rookie couldn’t sniff the field when Willie Smith was getting beat like a drum each week was troubling. Though that could just as likely be on terrible coaching decisions as much as anything else.

You get Geno and then HB, you are talking about knabbing the best QB and the best return man/Special teamer in the draft.

That’s a helluva base to start off with in a draft. Grab an OG, maybe an ILB prospect or TE, and we are on to something.

Address other issues (pass-rush) in FA. Bergstrom is your RT.
    =============================================
Credit to you for having a plan. Like your thinking. Especially the part about moving past CP.

    But…

I’m going to have to say I can’t buy into Geno Smith.

Saw a clip of some ridiculously poor throws by Geno on the NFLN yesterday.

That, along with his performance against Syracuse, has me leaning strongly against drafting GS.

IMO, GS can be anything between a bust or an average NFL QB but I don’t think his ceiling warrants being drafted #3.

BTW, I know you’re very high on Aaron Murray in next year’s draft.

I’m in a bubble bursting mode tonight, and will predict Murray is going to be an NFL bust.

    Rex Grossman 2.0.

Eventually, the RAID search for a franchise QB will come to an end, but I don’t believe it’ll be with either of these guys.

  315. Purvisman/Intrepid/Eternal Optimist Says:

Speaking of Seymour, there are still no definitive reports of his release, or his becoming a free agent on the official NFL Transactions site where other releases and signings are listed. Supposedly Feb. 8th was the deadline for the Raiders to excercise their option to void his contract and report it to the NFL who would then make it public. He is still listed on the
Raiders roster(injured reserve) and almost more tellingly, wikipedia.
Before you say how many times his release has been reported, it never has. Not Cork, JMac, Paul G., Vic Tafur, Levi, nobody. Lots of assumed, all but done, widely expected, likely etc.etc.etc.
Google ‘Richard Seymour contract voided’ and see what you get. Kawakami did say it automatically voided which is dead wrong. Surprise, surprise.

This is exactly right. Since there are no consensus one, two and three in this draft, and players seem to be shifting up and down every day, that is good news for the Raiders. + there are teams like St. Louis, or the Whiners that have a plethora of picks. If you are the Whiners would you not want to trade a couple of high lst rounders for a shot at Milliner or Moore or Werner? Makes sense to me.

From 6 to 14 is 8 spots (I used my fingers).

Now granted trading up to #3 should cost more than #6, but if we trade down 7 spots let’s say instead of 8, that 2nd rounder would be the 10th pick in the second round, as opposed to the 14th pick in the 2nd round that the Bucs got last year.

So that is my theory. If we want a 2nd rounder outright, we will have to move down 6-8 spots.

We could always toss in one of our 6ths to try to sweeten it up. Say swap from #3 to #7, give them a 6th and they give us their 2nd.

Good luck getting others to “restructure” in the future if they try and pull that crap. Tremendously bad form that wouldn’t go over well at all, despite how badly some here wanna see Palmer humiliated for not being the hero you wanted. So that makes Geno Smith highly unlikely for the Raiders.

You don’t draft Geno at 3 and have him sit on the bench in today’s day and age. You also don’t have a high paid veteran sit on the bench.
