Report: Raiders talking with Holmgren about job

Long-time Packers and Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren is the latest candidate to surface in the Raiders search for an established football person to assume a leadership role.

ESPN cited two unnamed sources as saying the two sides have spoken about the prospect of Holmgren joining the Raiders in some capacity.

Zak Gilbert, the Raiders director of media relations, issued the following statement: “As a general policy, the Raiders don’t comment on personnel matters, so the team isn’t able to confirm or deny the report. If the organization has more to say in the future, I will let you know.”

Holmgren most recently was with the Cleveland Browns as their team president until he stepped down late last season. He and current Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie worked together when they were with the Packers.
In recent months, the Raiders reportedly interviewed Ray Anderson, the league’s senior vice president of football operations.

A constant and solid pass rush can make any secondary look good.

Didn’t work so well for the 49ers, as it was their achillies heel at times all year and especially in the playoffs.

when has Oakland ever hired a coach with credentials? Norv Turner was maybe the only one, and poor one..

Holmgren as GM, hell no, he’ll do what Parcels did in Miami, set us further years back..

Reggie does a damn good job, and DA will too when Reggie gets our economy going and gets him the right players..

if you plan on to bet the entire franchise and to get a Playoff visit, you might do better as a Redskins fan. Bruce Allen, is about to make it DC a playoff team for 4 years and then a decade in the shadows..

I rather have a healthy franchise and become a dynasty than a few visits to the playoffs – but that will only happen with patience, due diligence and prudency..

Definitely a crapshoot, “can’t miss” prospects included.

There are two players in the recent past that come to mind, though. Both JPP and Aldon Smith were looked at as very raw physical specimens coming out. Nobody saw them accomplishing what they did so early in their careers (including, I would say, the teams that drafted them).

I would be cool with drafting HB in the 3rd round, and telling him on focusing on being a Pro Bowl kick returner for now.

No question. I think that with your best pass rusher the key is to get one-on-ones as often as possible, whether by blitzing from different positions or by having other guys (as the Giants and Niners did) that have to be accounted for.

Gotta have at least one guy that can get there consistently, though.

Why would anyone think hiring Andy Reid somehow increases our chances of bringing in Gruden?

yup, Ravens showed that special teams is a valid 3rd part of the team, though still under estimated..

Bears rode Devin Hester to a Super Bowl, and damn near won the thing.

Defense was good, but not like they were pitching shutouts in the playoffs.

Yup. Getting a solid pass rusher especially early will not only improve the defensive line players that remain, but will improve the secondary. It is an absolute must.

    >>>>

If they take this approach I sure as hell hope they trade down not once, but several times before drafting. This draft is supposed to be deep with defense, and most of them are 50/50 coin flips statistically anyway.

I am fine with drafting o-line at #3, and even can hold my nose with Geno at three.

But if we draft a flavor-of-the-week defensive player at three this franchise is doomed, IMO.

Reggie has no clue what he is doing! He just as well let the people writing in this forum do the drafting!!

  • RAIDERMAN99

When Reggie and DA get this thing sorted and the Raiders are winning again it will be interesting to see who changes their tune and supports them. Both of those guys have great reputations in the league and their peers speak very highly of them. The players do as well.

After Coach Tits is fired it will be interesting to see if he can find employment as a HS coach.

After Coach Tits is fired it will be interesting to see if Mike Holmgren considers coming out of retirement to coach the Raiders himself, or will merely assist Regina in finding and hiring a competent HC.

After Coach Tits is fired it will be interesting to see who changes their tune and says they now realize he should have been sent packing with Greg Krapp.

If there is’t enough writing on the wall for Reggie yet he must be in a coma. It is blantantly obvious Mark Davis was very unhappy with the job he did.

    —————————-

The question I’d love answered is this: Who is responsible for firing Hue Jackson? Several members of the media have insisted that it was Mark’s call, but Reggie and Mark (on multiple occasions) have pinned that one on Reggie.

Are they lying? Why? If they’re telling the truty and it was Reggie who talked Mark into letting him “get his own guy” — who went 4-12 and clearly did not thrill Mark who openly questioned his passion and then had the 3rd Harbaugh brother joke a few weeks ago — then maybe Mark is so pissed at letting Reggie talk him into firing Hue.

I think the two biggest coaching losses for the Raiders over the past few years were Brian Schneider and Mike Waufle.

Schneider had the special teams playing well, and Waufle was pretty much the guy that developed and implemented that fearsome d-line rotation in New York. I like what they both did here and wish they were still around.

You get Geno and then HB, you are talking about knabbing the best QB and the best return man/Special teamer in the draft.

That’s a helluva base to start off with in a draft. Grab an OG, maybe an ILB prospect or TE, and we are on to something.

Address other issues (pass-rush) in FA. Bergstrom is your RT.

To trade down, you need a trade up partner.

The way the top of this draft is unfolding, good luck with that.

We are stuck at #3, IMO, unless we are talking about taking a 4th round pick to move down 2-3 spots, instead of the one spot #3 traded down from last year for a 4th.

Bergstrom was McKenzie’s first ever draft pick as a GM.

He will start, by mandate if not performance.
