Myers thinks he may wind up elsewhere

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, March 4th, 2013 at 9:05 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders tight end Brandon Myers happened to have the best season of his career just as his contract expired.

Myers had an exquisite sense of timing with quarterback Carson Palmer and his 79 receptions (or 806 yards) were the most by any Raiders receiver since 2002 and the most for any franchise tight end since Todd Christensen had 92 receptions in 1986.

Although Myers concedes he’s new to unrestricted free agency, he’s not so sure the timing is right to return to the Raiders _ although he’s hoping for the best.

“Obviously, I’d like to stay,” Myers said by phone Monday night. “I’ve got a lot of friendships and know the coaches really well. They took a chance on me when I got drafted. I’d like to be there but it’s not looking like that right now. I guess I just have to stay patient and figure some stuff out. We’re pretty confident I’ll have ajob here in a couple of weeks, but I’ll just try to sti back and not stress about it.”

A sixth-round draft pick out of Iowa, Myers caught 32 passes in his first three seasons. It appeared he would be a starter in his third year when Zach Miller signed with Seattle, but the Raiders signed unrestricted free agent Kevin Boss instead. When given the chance to start in 2012, Myers showed an ability to find holes in zone defenses and on a snap-by-snap basis played more than he had ever played in his career.

`You work so hard in the offseason and during the season and during camp to be in that position,” Myers said. “I’ve worked extremely hard to get to that position and I just always knew that when I was given an opportunity I’d be ready and make the most of it.”

The deadline for putting franchise or transition tags on players expired Monday. Myers’ franchise tag was $5.9 million, the transition number was $5.1 million. The Raiders as of Sunday were just under $1.5 million under the cap. After dealing with contracts of players with big cap numbers such as quarterback Carson Palmer, wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, defensive tackle Tommy Kelly, there might be room for Myers.

Or perhaps not.

“I’m not very familiar with this. That’s why I have an agent. I’m optimistic that they might give me an offer, but I guess they had a conversation at the combine and it didn’t sound like they were ready to do that,” Myers said. “We’ll just see where it takes is.”

The other tight ends on the roster last season, David Ausberry and Richard Gordon, did little to inspire confidence they could replicate what Myers put up in terms of production as a receiver in 2012.

So ET you assume the players Reggie drafts will always be better players than any player Al could draft right?

You think Reggie will ignore the HWS players and get greta players right?

I say you assume a lot. This league is a talent first league and then everything else comes into play. Al Davis knew if a player could do something once he could do it twice. It was up to the coaches to bring it out of him. For you guys who seem to KNOW Reggie will get us all these great players. You might want to let him prove it first.

I see the players he drafts and to tell you the truth I don’t see a whole lot of difference with a few exceptions. There are only soo many bench marks you cna go on and we have always used those. So unless Your boy Reggie knows something no one else does. You just might want to wait and see……….just saying!

  8. Priesttj12 Says:

By the way Reggie seems to like a lot of those HWS players Al drafted after all…….just so you know!

Especially the kid Reggie seems to like the most is that HWS QB named Terrelle Pryor.

Im getting tired of this “year younger” BS. Seymour was the same unproductive player that got by on name recognition. Kelly wasn’t much less effective last year as the year before last. If wimbley was so vital to our pass rush why cut the dude? His contract was no more out of wack than Palmers is. We improved at LB, Dez had a solid year, and Houston had a breakout year so the give and take was even. You admit that Hue’s offense carried a weak defense to an 8-8 record, I see. Took long enough

  11. The_Civilian_James_Trapp Says:

#407, I agree with ya Priest. Streater was his best rookie and that is a total Al pick. The biggest problem wih our picks were the constant coaching changes. From 63-94 we kept the same philosophy, minus the Rat, and we had what? a handful of losing seasons. Funny that guys like McGlockton, A. Smith became completely different players once Shell left. That was our mistake more so than picking players, IMO, was constantly changing systems. Now Reggie has done the same thing, scrapped the ZBS and going back to a power scheme, with new coaches. I hope it works, but Bergstrom seems like he will be worthless. Burris missed just as many tackles as Napolean Harris ever did. So far, contrary to what the Chubby Checker apologists say, it’s not promising…but I’m willing to see what he can do this year.

You’re putting words in my mouth, sir. I said nothing about his being better or worse than Al. What I said was that he should have the right to evaluate players based on his own criteria, and make changes where he feels he needs to. I doubt very seriously that his criteria involves a lack of talent, and I’m sure that he is just as interested in HWS as every other GM in the NFL.

My point is that he’s an NFL general manager. It’s his job to evaluate players and make decisions based on his and his staff’s judgement. I’m just saying he should be allowed to do his job, is all.

I do think he’s going to do good things in Oakland, but that’s beside the point.

  13. Priesttj12 Says:

OK cool!, I just get a lil tired of the Al bashing in here after everything the man has done good and bad.

I think now that Reggie has kin dof gotten off his high horse looking down on this poor underprivileged org. that he may start to do things much better. he just came in way too arrogant for my taste.

  18. DJ Johnny Says:

As far as Reggie doing good things for Oakland we are right now at that point where it’s go time. This is it.

It started w/ the restructure of Brisiel and the next couple months is where Reggie is front and center in the spotlight.

The next couple months, and the decisions made now will affect this org for quite some time and may determine Reggies legacy.

He’s got some BIG decisions to make.

I guess I look at it this way; Reggie was hired for one of only 32 jobs available (31 if you count Jerrah, lol). Means he probably has a pretty good knowledge of football and related things.

He has watched a lot film on our players. He has watched a lot of film on players that aren’t on our roster. He has seen the contracts. He has seen the bottom line.

I don’t know what he knows, and I don’t think anyone on this blog does, either.

I’m not sure that it’s him that’s being arrogant regarding the best way to proceed.

  20. RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit Says:

I would say BURRIS was more then impressive for a 4th round prospect to come in and start right away is impressive.

yes he struggled but once again the Raiders had him playing out of posistion all year. Even Ex Raider LB coach Jonny Holland was on 95.7 the game a month ago and saying BURRIS is a natural Rusher.

Look at what he did in college. he was OLB and rushed the qb.

Its gonna take time for him to learn pass coverage something he wasnt good at in college.

I should be GM. I’d have the Raiders as contenders in one year flat!

  24. Priesttj12 Says:

Well i’ll just agree to disagree teach. He just had a condescending demeanor IMO. Contracts are what a player can negotiate they don’t necessarily proportionately relate to worth. Most fans see a player A making so much while player B is making much less but more productive and they immediately think the GM doesn’t know how to gage a players worth.

When it would be great if the world of NFL worked that way. It just doesn’t look at what Flacco sugned for. Does anyone think he’s worth that much?

But they had to pay it because he could WALK if they don’t, it’s better tp keep him. And that is how contracts often times get out of whack. It happens to the best of GM’s of which Ozzie is one.

Reggie will struggle with many issues of that sort throughout his career whether to keep a player who is key to the team and overpay him or lose him. That is how Routts contract got out of whack as well as several others.

You have to weigh the odds and make some very tough decisions. of which fans are absolutely clueless when things go awry. Mr Davis just never let money be an issue when it came to a player he needed.

Reggie may operate differently but can he WIN by doing so and that is the $$$ question.

Wow Streeter is neigther a pick nor an Al pick. RM invited him to join the team as an undrafted FA. I suppose that Burris is an Al Pick too??? The difference between AD and Reggie is Reggie is geared to thrive in the FA univerise where you build through the draft, getting mid teir FAs and you develop your talent through good coaching. AD did not value coaching that much and frankly did not draft that well the last 15-20 years he was owner/GM. I mean what other guy would draft a kicker in the 1st when he could have traded down a few times and still got Jano in the 3rd and got more picks.

What other owner has his player deals disgregarded by the rest of the league because they are “out of wack”

Loved AD in the 60’s 70’s and 80’s but he got left behind for sure.

Al Davis’ cap and Reggie McKenzie’s caps are different. Reggie’s cap grows more slowly than Al’s did, and future monies are counted differently. Al had pushed way too much too far into the future and it put the team in an untenable situation. You have to think he knew it, but weighed that against the time he had left and decided to go all-in.

The problem now is that the upper-level salaries are growing at a rate that’s much higher than the cap is growing. Teams are being forced to put a larger share of their payroll into a smaller number of players and it affects everything an organization is able to do. It’s a myth that we could have kept going the same way we were. It had to change, and unfortunately (or not, depending on how good you thought the players were), it involved a roster purge. Other teams will be doing it (some, like Atlanta, have started) as well.

It sucked for us because we had no depth.

  32. edward teach Says:

The ironic thing about the Falcons is that they cut a starting corner, their edge rusher, and their big back. Exactly what Reggie did last offseason.

The difference is that Dimitroff has had a few years to build his team and they will probably have enough depth to be ok.

We are talking about Brandon freaking Meyers here LMAOO thats how bad our talent is here. The guy was a horrible blocker, yet was decent in the middle passing game.

Raiders drafting a defensive player first, it better be pass rush specialist such as Jordan or Mingo, if not then draft OT, Fisher or Joeckel.

No to DT in the top ten, would rather draft Warmack.

Also Brisiel gives our Raiders depth at center, as well as a trade asset, either him or Bergstrom, many teams will want them, with their contracts now.

Nix will ve starting at season opener.

ET, when Bruce was here he handled the sap very well. All Mr Davis would’ve done is what he has always done hire someone to figure it out and move accordingly.

We had a lot more depth than people want to believe it all comes down to perception. This new reggime dismissed alot of that depth for guys who could NOT play. When you do that you better be right sure we needed to add in some areas but that is what we’ve always done whenever we needed to.

We were biulding the right way and on an upswing we needed to allow the HC more time to do his thing. Reggie came in and fired the guy.

You see it one way I see it totally different we could’ve made the postseason is things are done differently. Reggie screwed it up IMHO!

After all this time and absolutely no news or movement coming from 1220 when the rest of the teams are already moving fast preparing for FA – *this* is what we get – Brisiel *still* a Raider. He is one of (if not the) worst lineman in the whole damn league. This means we still pay this guy, *and* he gets a roster spot *and* possibly starts again? ughh..

Reggie lining it up nicely for that #1 pick in 2014. Expect DHB to be a ‘restructure’ and not a cut – #1 WR again this year – worst #1 in the league hands down. Might as well pay TK and Palmer too, Carlise, Lechler, McClain – all of em. Hell bring em all back – they’ll be just as fun to watch this year as last…

Somebody posted an exchange between a Raider fan and a Packer fan the other day. I wish I could remember where it came from, but it was basically the Raider fan asking what the Green Bay fan thought about the way McKenzie was handling the Raiders thus far.

The GB fan’s answer was very interesting; he said that a lot of people got impatient with him and Ted Thompson early on because they kept letting guys go in free agency and trading picks and players to get more picks, all the while cutting the payroll and bringing in guys nobody ever heard of. Then it all came together and those people realized what the two of them had been doing all along. The GB fan said that he understood our frustration but that if we stuck with him Reggie would prove himself and we’d have a stronger organization because of it.

    —————————————–

Don’t have any choice. I only trust him (a little) because he *was* a Raider and was brought up by Ron Wolf (another Raider) but he hasn’t exactly instilled a whole lot of confidence up to this point to be honest. I have hope. He he could wind up doing well or equally end up being a total flop, we really have no idea at this point.

I’m troubled that winners usually show themselves pretty quickly and he’s been – well lets just say.. more or less the opposite of that so far for the Raiders – granted the cap/picks situation bad but his HC choice and most of the FA moves so far have been terrible IMO (sans Wheeler who giving him a 1 yr deal is now going to bite us on the azz).

His ‘boys’ are now fulling running the show (including the ‘twin’) so we’ll know alot more a month from now..

America has a short attention span. Call it adult ADD if you want, but I think a lot of people just dont have any faith in something that takes a little investment of time to complete. Al Davis was gambling tomorrows draft picks on guys like DHB while backsetting big contracts and now Reggie has to clean up the mess. I understand it’s a win now league, and that’s great if you havent sold an entire generation of draft picks down the river just to stay under the cap.

Reggie uses his “do it the right way” phrase because he wants TIME to do it. The right way is to WIN there is no other way. Reggie wants people to beieve he has a blueprint to biuld a team and based on what I have seen; HE flat out doesn’t have anything worth talking about as the “right way” just get the job done and that is all that counts. Stop with this right way crap.

Just do your damn job competently is all I ask stop with the “I know what’s best” speechs and do the damn job………..period

ET, I get it, I’ve heard it and I know it. I’m not saying he shouldn’t be prudent in some areas but iw watched the Packers biuld and it was mostly thru FA they got Reggie White and Charles Woodson through FA they added some drafts and trades for Farve and got lucky with Rodgers. The difference is the two QB’s that is the ONLY difference here their. that is how they got those Lombardi’s………..period end of story.

This idea that you have to cut and trim is OK with me I don’t want to hear the crap about you can’t win right away because YOU CAN…………..period

  61. edward teach Says:

I don’t think you do get it, Priest. The salary cap exists, and the Raiders were in terrible shape with it a year ago. This means you can’t just go out and sign people like you used to be able to do when Bruce Allen was handling the cap. You have to have room to do it. Reggie said himself that he wished he COULD have made a splash in free agency right away; he just couldn’t.

That’s precisely why he’s operating now the way he is; so DOES have that flexibility down the line. I don’t know if this is true or not, but someone estimated earlier that we would be 50 million UNDER the cap in 2014. There, he has flexibilty. Now, he doesn’t have a whole lot. Period.

  62. Priesttj12 Says:

It’s as simple as playing the right players and knowing who those players are and what they can do BEST. Using them in ways to succeed instead os otherwise.

    Dashon Goldson has it

    —————————————————–

I have ben tryin to tell ya’ll that Jarvis Jones is that type of player, he is the best defensive player in this draft, he is the type of impact player this team needs, offenses will have to game plan just for this guy. I know he has the health concerns but what I have heard teams like what they heard from doctors at combine. I hope he is still there when we pick, if so I think Reggie will have a hard time passing him up even if he got a call for a trade down (unless the offer is too good to refuse of course)

  65. J Hill Says:

  74. CDERaider Says:

    Bad Reggie moves.

    * Firing Hue while still under contract. Terrible – still had to pay his *entire salary* last year and the team was pathetic. They could have been just as terrible with him as HC and would have saved the team millions.

    * Hiring Dennis ‘tennis visor’ Allen – an absolutely terrible HC. This will be his first and last HC gig in the NFL guaranteed – he’s not even a proven coordinator.

    * Allowing a 1st time HC pick his entire staff – terrible (Tarver *might* be something someday – prob not for us though). Team was awful on every front. Major steps backward in all phases – laughable most of the time.

    * Firing or ushering out the ‘Al’ asst coaches and longtime scouts with very little reason or class. Terrible.

    * Letting Michael Bush walk and giving the over the hill injury prone Mike Brisiel essentially the same contract Bush got in Chicago. Terrible.

    * Trading Bruce Campbell for an avg at best backup RB Mike Goodson and then outright cutting Joe Barskdale – 2 of the more promising young stud power blockers on the team. WTF was all that? They both started NFL games last year, btw.

    * Trading Murphy for a practically worthless bottom of the round 7th round pick when he’s better than DHB in every way – and still has 2 years left on a bargain priced contract while DHB gouging the team. Terrible.

    * Giving Ron Bartell $4 million and over hill guy coming off of major injury. Nauseating.

    * Restructuring Seymour and not just releasing him outright. Terrible.

    * The whole charade with Aaron Curry. Terrible. Should have cut him in preseason.

    * Cutting DVD and trying to cut Checkwa . Checkwa still on the team but both should have been kept and played alot more last year with all the CB problems we had and the other GB practice squad players were no better and both DVD/Chekwa were under contract for cheap. Now we have a bunch of crap FA’s.

On the good side I guess had a ‘decent’ draft considering and brought in Streater and Wheeler but doesn’t offset all the bad moves IMO.

He needs to have a much better year this year. I’m hopeful but seeing Brisiel back is not a good sign.

I hope he has a real plan – at this point, I really don’t know what it is. Now we’re going *back* to power scheme and we’re keeping Brisiel?

I’m not that high on Myers. He’s OK. A starting-caliber TE in this league, but I think there are several better options available this offseason including rookies Eifert, Ertz and Kelce and free agents like Delanie Walker, Dennis Pitta and Jared Cook and there are probably some others I’m forgetting. Bottom line is there may be 10 better TE options on the market right now while the stats-consumed beat writers have convinced themselves that Myers is a top tight end.

The reality is his numbers were inflated by having a good QB, a TE-heavy system and as a check-down surrounded by underwhelming WR play. Also, his blocking was atrocious this year. Personally, I’d be far more surprised if he ever puts up another 800-900+ yard season than if he never surpasses 500 yards in a season again.-

    CDERaider @74,

Wow. Pretty scathing but I think even the most ardent “In Reggie We Trust” types would have a tough time defending against most of that.
I haven’t completely written off McKenzie despite his many, many mistakes. Probably the only thing that pardons him for now in my book is that there are many reporters who insist that firing Hue was Mark’s decision. Because that’s where the dumpster fire that was the 2012 season began.

The Dennis Allen hire was a major gamble considering DA had one season as the DC of the 20th ranked defense and not even any direct ties to McKenzie. That’s a helluva gamble to turn over the keys to the franchise to that guy and then stand by and watch as he hires Greg Knapp and a rookie DC to go with the rookie owner, rookie GM and rookie HC.

Was not at all a fan of basically giving away Campbell and Murphy for a backup RB on a 1-year deal and a borderline throwaway draft pick. Brisiel was terrible. His deal was worse. Not having a reliable move the chains and red zone receiver was boneheaded. Entering the season without any kind of speed edgerusher was criminal.

Streater was a great pickup as was Wheeler. I really liked the Burris and Bilukidi picks as well late in the draft. So there were some positives. But, as they say, even a broken clock is right 2x a day. It is disconcerting that we didn’t lock up Wheeler and Desmond Bryant to long-term deals prior to last season.

Bottom line is the next 8 weeks will be huge in determining if Reggie is up to the job and how long he’ll be with the Raiders. I’ll probably have a much stronger opinion about him come May.-

Reggie cut off his nose to spite his face which mad ethings much more difficult where the cap is concerned.

My point is Reggie DID NOT KNOW THIS ROSTER because he fired the one coach who did…………….period

  95. Chris in NY Says:

    I think it’s a few things.

    1) The writers don’t care nearly as much about the success of the team as the diehards, so they don’t watch the games and follow the team with the same eye.

    2) The writers are far more concerned about staying on the good side of most players, coaches, etc, than in giving their own entirely honest assessments of the team. Gotta make sure those sources of quotes and info are in good standing.

    3) They don’t have the courage or confidence to go by what they see and instead rely largely on the opinions of pros and certain pundits than what is plainly obvious to outside observers. I will say that Cork at least gives opinions on things and will make some attempt to suggest what he thinks the team should do. Back when Jerry Mac was running the blog and chats trying to get a simple, legitimate answer to an opinion question was like drawing blood from a stone.-

  96. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

We sure are getting more posts now.
For awhile it looked like Cork was trying to kill the blog although some of the posters do a pretty good job of that.

It’s hard to see why they restructuring Brisiel although he’s not going make that much.
He’ll have to prove that he can work in a power scheme and he didn’t do that well for the zone blocking he was brought in for.

  97. RaidersNextGM Says:

Y’all are jokes judging McKenzie & co. based off of one season. Especially if you’re doing this and completely ignoring the fact that they were given no draft picks AND a tough cap-room situation. Thanks to Hue Jackson for the former, and Al Davis for the latter. (the people you should blame for the 6 ft hole the organization is trying to climb out of.) Note that I think Davis was the best thing to ever happen to football, and I think Hue Jackson is a stud play-caller.

Nevertheless, both McKenzie & Allen made mistakes but to me that’s okay since they were both rookies in their positions. It wouldn’t be okay if they didn’t own up to their mistakes or learned from them. But based on interviews this off season and moves they’ve made, it looks like they’ve learned quite a lot their rookie year. Allen sure as hell owned up to his mistake by firing Knapp and that horrible ST coach. I like all 3 signings of Olsen, Sparano, and April as well. Olsen looks like his style & scheme goes in hand with the offense this roster has, barring this group of o-linemen. But that’s where Sparano comes into play, an excellent lineman coach. It’s become a trend for o-line coaches to be asst. HCs, and Sparano seems the perfect role for that in Oakland. If you watch April’s introduction interview, he clearly has a great understanding of how important STs are. example: put an emphasis that a good ST always strives to put their team in good field position.

the linebackers coach, Bob sanders, looks like he just does a good job relaying the message…. Tarver specializes in linebackers so just have to have good communication between the two

The things we don’t see is what matters most to a team’s success during regular season. Those things being coaches meetings, team meetings, and practices. It matters a whole deal that the staff meshes together and understands each others philosophies. Maybe I didn’t pay attention as much last year or maybe I did, but I don’t remember getting the impression that the staff was working hard together on getting on that same level of speaking the same language, in terms of scheming and playbooking, that I do this year.

So I have a better sense of comfort with this staff than I do last year, that’s for sure. But now for the roster, us fans still have to wait and see, in order to fairly judge the front office. For me to have the same comfort that I do with Allen’s offseason moves, I would like to see the following from McKenzie:

Reconstruct Palmer OR cut him and draft Geno Smith — either way sign Matt Moore for competition
-Matt Moore has ties w/ Sparano, actually they flourished w/ each other, having their best seasons production-wise as a duo

resign Mike Goodson, definitely looked like a play-maker when given the ball last season, his PFF backs this up too +6.9 on 145 snaps

reconstruct DHB that gives a bigger aid to cap room than Brisel pay-cut, if he doesn’t want to, Cut him
attempt to sign WR Brian Hartline if Dolphins don’t resign him, another player that has ties w/ Sparano, i would say Greg Jennings but his asking price is ridiculous
-could even draft a WR, class is deep w/ hidden gems (Marquess Wilson)

attempt to sign TE Delanie Walker, if power scheme is what Olsen wants, Walker would be great fit, good run blocker that can line up anywhere on the field (sorta like Reece but as blocker instead of play-maker catcher/runner, although Walker can sometimes make spectacular catches, he just isn’t consistent) if i were passing though, i would just sub Reece or Ausberry in for Walker
-could even draft a TE, class is deep
let Myers walk, won’t fit new scheme

let Barnes walk, draft a RT
if Jets put a 2nd round tender on OT Austin Howard, and McKenzie trades back for one, attempt to sign the restricted free agent who has ties w/ Sparano

let Carlisle walk unless he takes vet minimum
attempt to sign OGs Brandon Moore and Matt Slauson from Jets, Sparano familiar w/ them as well…. Jets made strides when they switched to gap-blocking from zone-blocking late in the season

trade Brisel and Bringstrom for draft picks if they can’t adjust to gap-blocking scheme, otherwise keep them for competition

im HIGH on Brandon Ross, Phillip Adams and Joselio Hansen. resign them all if possible. Ross played great at end of season!! Can do good at both corner and safety imo. Adams is good reserve DB (held his own when name called) and can be good punt returner w/ coach April. Hansen is one best nickelbacks in league. FA class is deep so would like McKenzie to attempt to sign following: Adam Jones, Terrence Newman, Sheldon Brown, Chris Houston, Greg Toler, Darius Butler, EJ Biggers, Keenan Lewis, Kyle Arrington. whichever falls to 3rd tier in the FA in terms of pricing $$..
i can see McKenzie drafting CB McFadden out SDSU if he falls late mid rounds

resign Wheeler !! attempt to sign Nick Barnett (ties w/ McKenzie), attempt to sign Brad Jones (he loves him some Packers)

attempt to sign DE Michael Bennett (TA&M), definitely attempt to sign DE Juqua Parker–browns moving to 3-4 so he won’t resign with them; can come at cheap 1-yr deal, attempt to sign DE Wallace Gilberry
-draft Bjoern Werner (very high on him), Mingo, or Ansah

resign Bryant !! despite his mugshot LOL, you can’t knock Desmond’s coming along year last season (highest PFF rating for interior d-linemen +16.5) i think the mugshot helps Raiders leverage in resigning him matter of fact
cut Tommy Kelly if he doesn’t reconstruct
attempt to sign DT Vance Walker
or draft Sharriff Floyd, Star, Sheldon Richardson

reconstruct Huffs contract, maybe Branch too.. move Huff back to FS..
draft a safety, class is deep
    PLZ cut Giordano,
resign Mike Mitchell if cheap (ST player, good reserve for depth)
can always play Brandon Ross at FS if Huff needs to be cut

sadly, let Shane Lechler walk and use that $$ elsewhere… I like King’s potential.. have King or Pryor be Jano’s new holder

I think Reggie might let all of our players test the waters in free agency so that he can gauge their value. Then he’ll make offers that are competitive rather than overpaying for their services like Al Davis used to. Grandpa Davis might have given Wheeler & Bryant 5-year $30 million contracts. Reggie might get them for HALF that

Right now he doesn’t have any money to play with, so I would expect to hear a few more paycuts in the coming week

People whine about the lack of activity by our new GM, but I think it’s a breathe of fresh air. no knee-jerk reactions or making moves just to make them when you don’t have to. Reggie will probably be the NFL’s most active GM on draft day. He finally has his own scouting dept and can fill the team with “his guys”

Unfortunately, we can’t afford to pay Lechler what he’s worth. He probably wants to go play for a winner and be closer to home (Texas) anyways. It’s unlikely he would give us a hometown discount after the last few HUGE contracts he received from Al Davis. He might get 2-year $6 million contract on the open market

  106. RaiderRockstar Says:

by the way, I don’t think King automatically gets the new punter job … he’ll have to compete for it

These excuse makers like to point to the cap for their logic but money was being paid to players who I thought should’ve have been shown the door first. WE could not afford to lose Bush and Wimbley but we could afford to lose Seymour he didn’t play half the seaosn last year. Why re-sign him and then Palmer could’ve offered relief as well.

    ********************************************************

Easy answers to both questions. While Wimbley’s production tailed off as the year went on, Seymour (and most people forget this) went to the Pro Bowl.

We were 30 million over the cap. Bush wanted starter money, and he’s not a starter. Couldn’t have given him that kind of money if we wanted to, and shouldn’t if we could have.

    Oh. And Palmer did give us cap relief. Here’s the proof, should it matter to you;

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7666192/carson-palmer-oakland-raiders-restructures-contract-source-says

The cap DOES matter. It’s not an excuse. Ask Atlanta. They released a starting corner, their big back and their edge rusher this week, just like Reggie did a year ago. For salary cap reasons. If you DID know about the cap, you would know that it does not grow at ten per cent annually like it used to. It grows at less than three per cent, and salaries for the top echelon are growing much faster than that. It’s simple math, and hiring a capologist doesn’t change that.

Like I said, you can deny reality all you want. Doesn’t change it, though.

Plans to Build Downtown LA NFL Stadium Reportedly Not Likely to Happen
By Justin Onslow(Featured Columnist) on March 5, 2013

Los Angeles may have to wait a little longer for a chance at an NFL team.

According to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, the NFL has all but officially eliminated AEG’s proposal for a stadium in downtown Los Angeles:

Less than six months after the L.A. city council voted unanimously to support AEG’s plan, the concept is essentially dead to the NFL, according to two sources. The problems with the plan are numerous, but the most essential one is the economics.

According to Cole’s report, AEG hopes to build a football facility across from the Staples Center, but the cost of such an undertaking would be in the vicinity of $1.8 billion. The NFL believes that figure would make the numbers “unworkable,” according to the league source he quotes.

The NFL is still open to AEG’s plans to build a complex for an NFL team in Los Angeles, though. It just seems the company will have to find a way to make the project more financially sound.

Another limitation for such a project is the inadequate space in which to build a stadium in the area. According to Cole, the league has been entertaining the idea of the project for some time, but the “cramped conditions” that close to the Staples Center would make adding a football facility a difficult task.

Last September, Los Angeles city council approved a potential stadium project with a unanimous vote. Despite the city’s eagerness to bring an NFL team back to Los Angeles—and the league’s reported interest—no real progress has been made (per Cole).

In July, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell sent a memo to the league outlining stipulations for relocation to Los Angeles. In the memo, he also stated his desire for any new facility in Los Angeles to be able to house two franchises (per ESPN).

Los Angeles hasn’t hosted an NFL team since 1995 when the Rams and Raiders relocated. The interest to bring back another franchise is present, but the circumstances aren’t right—at least not right now.

  118. DJ Johnny Says:

It’s interesting (or not) that out of the “Top 100 Players of 2011″ as voted on by his peers Seymour was one of only 3 pro bowlers who didn’t make that list.

I will grant that Seymour always seemed to rate high by PFF (or whatever who does the rating) for his work, even though he rarely made any impact plays that you’d see. I guess they count double teams or making the tackle when a runner is in his area etc.

Seymour is one of those guys that everyone says is doing a great job, even though our defense ranks close to last in the league and you never see him making any impact. I have to trust the folks that “rate” these things I guess and he’s had a good overall career.

U HAVE TO COACH THE KID UP and continue to develop him. TOP NOTCH COACHING is key.

    *******************************

    Bingo!

I had a revelation when I read the Teryel Pryor piece last fall when he said for a whole year no one even talked to him under Hue. Hue carried no QB coach and was light on staff (maybe not his fault) but the end result was that players were not being developed. This year Plamer took TP under his wings (probably at the encouragement of the coaches) and there was a QB coach that was working with TP even though he was 3rd string. Now this year he is now up to 2nd String and there will probably be packages for him so he gets more development. With (you got fit into my system Knapp gone) I expect even more development work on the offensive side. Even what Saunders has been allowed to do with the TEs this year in comparison to previous years was different.

Now comes this year. There have been signficant upgrades at OL coach, Linebackers Coach, ST coach, and I would say OC. A lot of what they did last year was last minute on the fly kind of hires but with more time they put serious consideration into recruiting and hiring high value experienced coaches. With a few exceptions I have not seen this in the past.

I know i’m already on thin ice after declaring hope that we don’t draft ANY qb this year and still tell Palmer to take a paycut or kick rocks..

I think between Ausberry & Gordon we’ll be fine. If Myers tests the waters in FA and doesn’t find much, I can see Reggie bringing him back at a reasonable rate. I think BigMac is anticipating Myers asking price to be high since he lead the AFC in receptions for a TE and was Top 3 in receiving yards. I think some team will offer more than we’re able to. We might just bring back Kyle Efaw or some other undrafted rookie to compete with AusGord.

I can’t see any scenario where Palmer holds us over the coals for his current salary. He took a flat out pay cut from 8 mill to 2.5 mill in 2011 when he joined the team, and he was happy to restructure last year for cap relief. As far as his worth is concerned, that is tough. A restructure in Palmers case, won’t provide any relief to the team unless he extends his contract for a number years (entirely possible) but that will put us in the position of kicking the cap can down the road further and further.

The numbers on Palmer this year are $17 mill cap charge ($13 mill salary, 3.8 mill bonus charge) as his deal stands. If we cut him today, we will accelerate next years bonus charge to this year giving us just shy of $8 mill in dead money, but with no further obligation to Palmer.

The truth of the matter is, everyone including Palmer knows he isn’t getting that kind of jack on the open market. However, if he is willing to take a straight paycut to about 8mill salary which will give us about $5 mill cap relief he will be our starter next year. If not, he will probably be manning the helm in Buffalo or AZ

    ——————————————————————————

    Winning record next year?

I’m curious to hear your winning formula?

    >>>>>

Its pretty simple really, and much of it has already been done. Replace the narcissistic abject idiot that ran our entire offense into the ground trying to prove that the ZBS works (without any counter plays) and CP doesn’t need to run any no-huddle.

    That has been accomplished already.

Secondly build an offense AROUND CP and McF, instead of making the an entire afterthought. Use our early picks on o-line so CP has more time, and McF has bigger holes to run through. Pick up a true number one WR in free agency (we’ve been kinda crossing our fingers and hoping on this for 5 years now IT ISNT WORKING.)

Keep coaching up the defense and plug in a true FA free safety. Our last line of defense last year was manned by a guy that will almost certainly be out of the league this year… Gio cost us at least 4 wins last season. Horrible horrible horrible player. The worst starting free safety in Raider history.

Thats really all we need to do for a winning season… remember, we damn near had to TRY to lose games in 2011 to avoid a 9 win season… the NFL is that mediocre.

Someone needs to send Reggie the 26 bucks so he can subscribe to PFF. Brisiel was the 73rd ranked guard our of 81 players last year, and much of the negatives came from PENALTIES (which has nothing to so with his ankle.)

This was almost as stupid as restructuring Seymour last year.

I have the sinking feeling that Reggie is going to waste all of his draft picks on flavor-of-the-week defensive flops, and completely ignore the much safer picks on the o-line… thinking everything is fine there. We are two or three players away from an elite offense, and 7 or 8 players away from an elite defense… I know which one I’d attack in the OFFENSE ONLY NFL…

  189. guest123 Says:

Oh I also agree that Myers has some value. He’s a strong special teamer, and a decent TE with good hands and good body control to catch Carson’s checkdowns reliably. There is a value to that. He’s due a raise for retroactive stats. It doesn’t sound like the Raiders are even interested in that. Hard to believe they are giving such a cold shoulder to Myers considering the stats he put up last year. Unless Myers agent leaked out what his contract demands are. It looks doubtful he’d come back the way it sounds.

  190. bcz24 Says:

Actually, I would say the penalties are direct result of his ankle. Penalties like false starts are a lack of concentration (hard to concentrate on snap count if you are in pain) and if his ankle was week he would be more apt to holding since it would cause him to be offbalance and weak.

Actually I think if anything, if the offense opens up under Olson, the TE position should scale back to 40 to 50 catches tops. Whenever you have a TE pushing 80 catches, you know the WR’s weren’t utilized the right way. I respected the signing last year and could easily see how it made sense. This is a different year and based on what we know it just doesn’t seem like a good fit for the $$. i think they will restructure palmer, restructure dhb, cut kelly, and extend dmac contract to spread out the cap hit and make it more cap riendly this year, probably with something in there that voids the contract if he doesn’t play a certain amount of games/snaps. They obviously want DMac around for awhile or they wouldn’t be changing the system to fit his running style. So y wait for him to have a big year and then have to pay him big as a free agent or see him walk. They should do what the warriors did with curry and sign him to an extension before the season starts. that would be a good start to free agency/offseason.

I don’t think any amount of language in his restructure will be able to pull back the $3 million check he gets next week.

Yup. We basically rewarded him for sucking.

I think DMac would be foolish not to take a new deal with us this year based on his injury history, but players love to bet on themselves. I have faith that in this, his contract year, DMac will have career best #s all around.

I don’t understand Reggie’s loyalty to DMAC. He should be shopping him around for a draft pick and let his injury history and impending UFA status be some other team’s one year rental worry.

he has good hands. actually broke J. Rices D-IAA record for consecutive games with a TD. i think the knock on him was his route running and getting off press coverage. The Sacramento Bee pegs C.J. Spillman and Darcel McBath as candidates to replace free agent FS Dashon Goldson.
Goldson already has one foot out the door. Spillman is a thumper that has been used in goal-line situations, while McBath is a restricted free agent that is better in coverage. The Niners could also address the position in the draft with one of their 15 picks.

Cullen Jenkins? He’ll have many other options but this is where it was assumed Reggie would excel. Not only with bringing in those hidden gems from udfa land and the draft but also in attracting solid free agents.

Wasn’t one of the knocks on Al (of recent vintage) that he couldn’t attract any decent fa’s w/o grossly overpaying? Well that was supposed to change with the new regime right?

When hu jack was fired they said it was the right move. When D.a was hired they applauded.

When plamer signed they danced kn the street and proclaimed it a major boon, and evidence that the raiders have “left the davis era behind”.

Now D.a is clealry floundering, his rookie mistakes have benn exposed. Brought to light by his own back tracking and ridiculous statements almost one week after the next.

Palmer has become a complete basket case that couldnt find a win with a map and a flashlight. A human tornado of turnovers, sideline tantrums, and icy hot ointment, palmer was as helpless against the defense as a new born slug.

what do the local media magicians have to say about it??? CRICKETS!!!!!!

Sure they now will question allen, in some areas, yes they have dialed down the palmer praise.

YET NONE OF THEM HAVE THE BALLZ TO ADMIT THEY WERE WRONG ON ALL COUNTS IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!

Myeres benefited greatly from palmer inability to relate with his wrs and get them the ball down field.

palmer was fixated on myers (soft hands?)and pumped with balls repeatedly, to the tune of nearly 80 catches.

Instead we get this Briesell guy and give him a 20 million contract. He is largely injured and worthless
    *****************
Not for nothing, but 4 mill per year for a starting offensive lineman is peanuts. The tag # for Olineman is 10 million, so we are talking less than half of that number.
    ==================================================
Tag for offensive lineman is 10 million ?

Maybe for a franchise tagged OT that’s getting top 5 at his position money – but Briesel is an injured OG, that definitely wouldn’t be getting ‘franchise’ money anywhere else.

I’ll buy that restructuring Briesel might have been the best move Regina could make as far as the cap goes, but I’m not buying that 4 million a year for a OG is peanuts. My guess would be that the average OG doesn’t get 4 mill a year.

Hard to spin the Briesel signing as a good one.

If he can’t come back and play well, his signing goes down as a disaster.

  338. RaiderRetribution Says:

I’m willing to give Brisiel another year, he will want to prove he’s worth the contract.

If the Raiders draft either Fisher or Joeckel at RT, which we should do if we can’t trade back then Brisiel will have a much improved season, Smith, barksdale, Bergstrom, Barnes were the RTs he had to play next to.

I think Nix will be starting at either LG, RG, or RT and be a beast.

  339. Dakota Says:

Flacco the highest paid player ever?

  340. guest123 Says:

Biggest gripe I have with “Reggie’s vision” is that he turned over the keys to the old mans car to a teenager before he got used to the road. Reggie never should have entrusted that much power and influence over the hiring decisions as he gave to coach Allen. Rookie coaches need oversight. Need someone to hold their hand. Reggie needed to shape the vision, rather than allow it to be shaped for him. He should have been down in the trenches vetting Allen’s coaching hires and unilaterally vetoing the ones that didn’t meet the vision. That’s on Reggie.

  341. RaiderRockstar Says:

Everybody is getting so pissy about the O-Line. Look, it’s already etched in stone. Barnes & Carlisle will be re-signed to 1-year vet minimum deals.

Bergs will compete with Carlisle & Brisiel at guard, maybe even Barnes at RT. He’ll have to earn it. It will not be handed to him. Nix may compete for one of those guard spots too

We’re not drafting a O-Liner in the first 4 rounds and we’re probably not signing a free agent OL who costs more than vet min either.

the O-Line problems died with Knapp & Pollack

  342. Marks hair Says:

if Reggie keeps changing plans, I will have no problems changing GM’s. we should have never went away from Raider football on offense, not with the players we currently have on the roster. And now we immediately scrap it and go back.. just ridiculous. I must have typed wasted season about 1000 times last year starting with the signing of Greg krapp

It’s pretty typical for a GM to allow the HC to pick his own staff, including all 3 coordinators.

I think us Raider fans are just so used to having the owner/gm force coordinators and asst coaches on our HC that we think thats the normal way of doing business.

    It isn’t!

part of “changing the culture” was Mark hiring Reggie and not meddling, then Reggie hiring Dennis and not meddling. No more dysfunctional BS that scares off future potential coaches from coming to Oakland for an opportunity. Reggie is setting the tone. If Dennis fails, he can’t blame anybody but himself and he will be the one fired (by Reggie). Then thats one strike against Reggie for choosing the wrong HC, but not for allowing that HC to do his thang. BigMac will mainly be judged on his ability to bring in players via draft & free agency at a reasonable rate who can help us win ballgames. If he strikes out with both players & coaches, he won’t last long. Too many other potential GM’s out there waiting for an opportunity. Mark Davis only interviewed 1 guy and thats the guy he hired.

I dont fault RM for his draft picks. What he is supposed to do with end of 3rd round pic? Getting Burris and Criner when he did was all right. I liked what he did with developmental players with later round pics and he got Streeter walking on esstentially. Not bad. Still I do not get the Brisell thing. Does anyone get this move? I am stunned because I thought he was smarter than this.

    +++++++++++++++++++

Which move? What am I missing? Sorry, I have not read the blog in a few days. Are you talking about his restructured deal to free up cap space? Or his original signing in the first place?

    ******************************
    Dakota

I am talking about just moving his base salary to roster bonus with no pay cut for Brisell. RM could have saved 2.82 million this year by cutting him and not had the cap hit next year. Briesell has been injured and terrible why does he deserve anything over vet minimum at this point? Also he may not fit the PBS system very well. I did not like the move last year to sign him and I like this move even less.

No one thought Myers was going to be good last year. I have to admit though it is hard for me to think one of the WRs magically becomes a #1. I think D. Moore if he can start catching again may be the closest we have. The others are #2 – #4. To think we can play Oline like in 2011 with Carlise older, Santelli gone, Wiz at center and Barnes older is a strech as well. I guess we have to see how FA and Draft plays out but not looking to good right now.

I’m watching the Brandon Myers interview on the NFLN and they start showing some clips of Coach Tits on the sidelines.

    Revulsion. Nausea. Disgust.

I actually hate this androgynous doofus.

Don’t have any expectations of the Raids turning things around as long as Krapp’s little sister is HC.

Can’t wait til Tits is fired.

    Okay wait till 2025

Here is some kool aid for you J Hill, although it could use some sugar.RT will either be addressed in the draft or Berg will win the position.I wouldn’t call our RG injury prone because he got injured, played while injured, and had surgery after the season-it happens all the time with many players.CC isn’t brought back and Nix or Berg-if he doesn’t move to RT-wins the LG spot and is as good or better than CC.Our new OC puts Moore and DHB back into the positions they had before Knapp for some reason switched them around. We also draft a good TE to work in while Ausberry and Gordon get their shots and just maybe one of them steps up.An optimistic outlook,I’ll admit, but it is possible.
