Raiders don’t use franchise-tag designation

The Raiders opted against using the franchise tag on any of their prospective unrestricted free agents before the window closed Monday afternoon.

Last season, the Raiders placed the franchise-tag designation on strong safety Tyvon Branch as a means of protecting themselves from losing one of their key starters.

Ultimately, Branch signed a long-term contract that superseded the one-year tender as the Raiders franchise player. Players who are franchise-tagged are guaranteed the average salary of the five-highest-paid players at their position from the previous season.

Not applying the franchise tag on any of their 17 prospective unrestricted free agents doesn’t mean the Raiders aren’t interested in bringing back some or all of those players.

They have until March 12 to hammer out contracts with key players such as linebacker Philip Wheeler, tight end Brandon Myers and defensive lineman Desmond Bryant before other teams are allowed to make offers.

Also, the Raiders were only $1.45 million under the salary cap limit as of Monday morning, while still needing to account for the salaries of five more players before free agency starts Mar. 12.

Using the franchise tag would have made reaching cap compliance even more difficult. The Raiders can use up less cap room for 2013 by signing some or all of the aforementioned players to long-term deals.

Several top-notch players such as wide receiver Wes Welker, cornerback Aqib Talib, free safety Dashon Goldson and tight end Jared Cook also weren’t franchise-tagged by their respective teams.

Players such as those are intriguing prospects for the Raiders to consider if those players remain unsigned once free agency starts.

For now, though, the Raiders primary focus is freeing up enough money so that they can re-sign some of their own players before they are eligible for free agency.

    Seymour, Giordano, Leinart & Spencer

Lechler may be out of our price range…

Kinda sad, if the whole Raiders team was FA’s is there anybody worth the Franchise tag?

  • elraidmanhattan

Btw sad list absolutely nobody deserves franchise tag

  • Citizen Dildo

Carson Palmer $5,995,000 in Cap savings
Tommy Kelly $4,775,000 in Cap savings
Darrius Heyward Bey $5,341,000 in Cap savings
Rolando McClain ($4,220,000) in Cap HIT
Mike Brisiel $2,820,000 in Cap savings

By Releasing these guys plus the ($510,000) we are over the cap right now……………Raiders will be at $14,195,000 under the salary cap, not a lot of room but considering we were only $5,000,000 under the cap last year means we are heading in the right direction and that’s all you can ask for as a Raider fan. The real bright side is 2014, Raiders are currently under the Cap a little over $50 million so it will be another year and a half before we acquire some decent talent, simple as that.

Lechler’s leg isn’t what it once was. He may sign cheap so he doesn’t have to switch his kids school(s).

  • tailgater

Lechler wants out. He was pulled aside by veterans on the team many times last year about having bad attitude during practice. he is done with Oakland, to much partying by players and not enough team.

  • elraidmanhattan

Lechler is as good as gone.
I said it before cut palmer

that’s what it boild down to……”WORTH”….

    and it’s NOT there.

  • Plunketthead

Reggie is getting rid of the partiers and the knuckleheads so Shane cannot use that for an excuse. Besides, he was ok with the partiers all those years Al made him the highest paid punter

  • oldschoolraider

Thanks for gracing us with a new post cork.
Please, pace yourself. We don’t want you to burn out.

  • elraidmanhattan

I also think desmond bryant is a goner

  • AussieRaiderRosco

Surely palmer will restructure and the raiders will try to build the trenches in the draft, if the o-line can be strengthened and the scheme fits McFadden, there’s no reason why the offense can’t be legit again. Defense too scary to contemplate with the roster in the state it’s in…

Did you hear Lechler just took a vacation in Florida? Took Desmond Bryant out for a few drinks…

No franchise tag is the correct move, Reggie Rules!

  • http://singleness-of-purpose 909RaiderLifer

Is the rumor true? That Reggie plans on having IHOP cater the team breakfasts during training camp, by cashing in his frequent diner cards. Thus, saving Mark enough $$ to hire Holmgren……

    Fortify the Lines….

  • elraidmanhattan

Espn should fire Williamson. Dj williams??? Big knucklehead

  • ohioraider

Wow. Such harsh words for Lechler, probably the last HOF player Al will have drafted. The guys been gold. I’d move on too if I were him. Try to get into the playoffs.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Lechler a hall of famer? No punter not even Ray Guy has been named to HOF. Why would they name Shane over Ray Guy? Guy was much more dominant in his day while I admit I think Shane can punt farther not necessarily higher than Guy.

  • AussieRaiderRosco

Is there market for DHB, can’t see any team offering him much of a FA contract. I think our pick is best spent on the ‘O’ rather than ‘D’ line, what do you guys think?

  • JLofty

No, the only guy on our roster TALENTED enough for top 5 $$$ in the NFL is McFadden and HE is too brittle to warrant that. ANd maybe little Wiz, centers can’t make that much right?
    Sad but true.

    ————————————–
Well, I’m betting he gets in. Guy deserved it, but his time passed and Lechler is even better.

  • JLofty

DHB will get cut. He is simply not worth whatever that redonkulous contract is supposed to give him. i like him and maybe they work something out but you can’t just tear up a contract, you restructure the stupid money or you cut…

  • elraidmanhattan

I can see signing barnett, not sure wheeler is back, established himself will look for more loot on the market.
I said it before 2013 continue to rebuild add a couple of low priced FA’s.

And please myers can walk sorry runs in cement

  • JLofty

Ray Guy NOT in the HOF is a FARCE!! Guy changed games with his skill. Also let Al have more position players on roster by being the emer/3rd string QB…

  • theghostronin79

I think DHB only gets cut if he REFUSES to restructre….And I don’t see him refusing.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Out of this list that RR put up which ones are most important?

    69 Khalif Barnes OT
    90 Desmond Bryant DT/DE
    66 Cooper Carlisle G
    97 Andre Carter DE
    53 Omar Gaither MLB/OLB
    27 Matt Giordano FS
    25 Mike Goodson RB
    10 Derek Hagan WR
    23 Joselio Hanson CB
    9 Shane Lechler P
    7 Matt Leinart QB
    34 Mike Mitchell SS
    83 Brandon Myers TE
    92 Richard Seymour DT
    77 Matt Shaughnessy DE
    36 Shawntae Spencer CB
    52 Philip Wheeler OLB

I am thinking Wheeler, Hansen, Gaither, , Carter, and Bryant on DEF (only if the last four are coming in at right price) and maybe just Barnes and Myers (only if Meyers not asking big premium). I think the only one that needs to be protected before FA is probably Wheeler and maybe Hansen. Some of the others can be signed later.

Carlise is a better ZBS blocker and is getting old and probably not even worth the vet min anymore.

  • elraidmanhattan

Guys please realize Reggie walked into a disaster, a complete wreckage it is a tough task, this year try to compete plan for 2014 mark it down big time cuts coming, but reggie realizes he needs to show that we are not giving up, so some dolts will stay strictly for the facade

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Sean Smith CB and Glenn DOrsey should be Raiders

and I dont care who the queefs signed.

Raiders smashed them 2x last year and the Raiders were kinda bad

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

    Steve Corkran ‏@CorkOnTheNFL
Guard Mike Brisiel and Raiders hammer out restructured contract. Move reduces Brisiel’s base salary for 2013 from $4.35 million to $1.35.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Wiz as a Guard might of been top 5 in 2011. Stupid move putting him at center – Thanks again Knapp.

  • AussieRaiderRosco

Hey JLofty, will there be a cap hit to releasing DHB? Between the McClain / palmer dead money and the loss of pick in the second round, I don’t envy reggie trying to turn this around with effectively one hand tied behind his back

  • theghostronin79

    There’s ONE down………

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Raiders should have signed D Goldson..if only he was a FA last year not tagged
