Mitchell could return in 2013

The Raiders apparently aren’t bent on purging everything associated to owner Al Davis in 2013.

Safety Mike Mitchell, widely regarded as a major reach as a second-round pick (No. 47 overall) in the 2009 draft, is cautiously optimistic about returning to the team that selected him out of Ohio four seasons ago.

Mitchell, whose exuberance and willingness to hit drew mostly compliments from coach Dennis Allen last season, said he left the Raiders facility following the season feeling good about his chances of coming back.

“The fact that they’re showing interest in getting a deal done I think that says that,” Mitchell said by phone Tuesday night. “At the same time, it’s a business. Things change overnight. You never know how that’s going to play out. It’s good for me to leave (Alameda) knowing they want to bring me back and it’s good for me to them to be contact my agent trying to get a deal done. That’s reassuring.

“They’re men of their word. I’ve said that since day 1. I believe coach Allen and Reggie are good me and they’ve followed that up by what they’ve shown me in free agency. But still, it’s an extremely tough decision. I’m not even close to making a decision yet.”

To review, Mitchell’s solid senior season at Ohio University and a spectacular Pro Day caught the eye of Davis. The Raiders picked him in the second round, while some draft analysts _ including the highly respected Mike Mayock of NFL Network _ had him as a late-round pick or free agent.

Mitchell said he feels capable of being a starter in the NFL. Whether the Raiders can offer that, or whether they’re even intending on offering it, remains an open question. Strong safety Tyvon Branch signed a multi-year deal last season after being named the club’s franchise player. Michael Huff, who moved to cornerback in Week 3 last season, is slated to return to free safety.

Both McKenzie and Allen have talked of Huff’s contributions at corner and about looking forward to him returning at free safety. Huff’s most recent contract would make him difficult to release. He’s due $4 million in salary plus a $4 million roster bonus entering free agency, but the amount of dead money from releasing Huff would total approximately $9.5 million.

More likely, the Raiders would reduce Huff’s base salary and extend him even further into the future. The final two years of Huff’s contract _ 2015 and 2016 _ are voidable years.

Alex Smith was just traded for a high second!

I’ll be terribly disappointed if we just release Palmer without trying to make his contract reasonable and trading him for something. If we gave up a 1st and 2nd for absolutely nothing, that’d be just as embarrassing as Jamarcus Russell.

If we’re not trading him, he better be our QB this season.

WOuld they think about trading palmer for a 7th and salary cap considerations (the other team taking on some of the dead money we would owe? if he doesn’t restructure or take a cut i wuold be for that. def better than just releasing him. If he takes a cut/restructures and stays i’m cool with thats too. i know in the nba they do trades with money considerations, and i think denver did that wit nyj for tebow last yr, but i dont know.

    ————————-

I think the trading partner would take on the whole salry, but the bonus is already in Carson’s wallet and would accelerate on our cap.

The considerations are like when the yankees traded David Justice to the A’s and still paid half his salary just to get rid of him.

    ========

ok so what happened with denver and new york last year with tebow. i remember one of the sticking points was that nyj would have to split the cap hit or salary or bonus or something with the bronccos. if you’re sayng that the new team takes the salary in full, and i’m not disagreeing with u, then what were they talking about with that situaTION?

On what he’s working on the most to improve this offseason:
“The biggest thing is I’m hiring three quarterback coaches — Craig Austin, (George) Whitfield and Steve Clarkson…I want to work on my balance and just staying balanced at the end of my drop. That’s where I was messing up a lot of my throws. It’s not the arm strength; I have a pretty strong arm. It’s just staying balanced at the top of my drop and getting into my hitch.”

    ***************************************
This is something I was seeing in the SD game that he does not necessarily do all the time. He was throwing off balance. He did this several times. It is good that he is seeing this and working on this.

When I watch TP throw I definitely don’t get the impression that arm strength is a problem.

I don’t think there’s much of a problem with his set-up or delivery either.

I do think there’s a problem with him trying to be too precise instead of just letting it rip.

This might stem from trying to compensate for a lack of natural accuracy.

Watched a few more clips of Geno Smith throwing and although arm strength isn’t a concern, one thing I notice is that he doesn’t seem to generate much arm speed when he’s throwing.

When I watch the real gunslingers, guys that can really throw darts, their arms are a blur.

Talking about guys through the years like Bert Jones, Marino, Elway, Favre.

Geno’s delivery is smooth, but it’s not dynamic.

When you watch enough of his longer passes you’ll notice they seem to have more elevation than what’s necessary and kind of float in.

I don’t claim to be a QB guru and maybe I’m seeing things that aren’t there or aren’t important.

But I don’t think Geno is anything special or will do particularly well in the NFL.

But a 33 year old qb with 10 wins the past 3 seasons is the answer…vikings are better off with matt moore. it would cost less. if palmer was so good y didn’t any team try to trade for him in 2011? whenthe owner was taking trades and Carson was sitting at home retired…if alex smith is worth a 2nd round plus, y wouldn’t any desperate team trade for palmer then?

and a lot of teams trade for players ever thought they are possibly going to get cut, they do it if they really want them because they don’t want another team to get a chance to claim/sign the player before they do.

I didn’t realize the Vikings had to save cash? Matt Moore over Palmer? No wonder you hate him so much!!

Good grief… this makes my head hurt.

i don’t hate palmer, but matt moore a solid starter for 5 mil a yr or palmer a solid starter for 15 mil a yr. neither r franchise qbs. neither r gonna win u a super bowl. they are both stop gap players. save the money. minnesota isn’t getting another qb anyway. not until next year. maybe late in this draft to play backup bc joe webb is terrible.
