Breaking news: Raiders restructure Branch’s contract

The Raiders freed up $5 million or so in salary cap room by restructuring the contract of starting strong safety Tyvon Branch on Thursday, according to a person familiar with the situation.
The Raiders reduced Branch’s base salary from $6 million to $715,000 for 2013. In exchange, the Raiders tacked on two seasons to the four-year contract Branch signed last season.
Branch still is in line to earn $6 million in 2013, in large part because of a $3.5 million roster bonus the Raiders honored. The saving comes in the form of reducing Branch’s cap figure from $10.9 million to approximately $6 million.
Branch’s salaries for 2014 and 2015 remain unchanged. However, he now is slated to earn $6.5 million in 2016 and ’17.
Branch was the Raiders franchise-tag player last season. The long-term contract he ultimately signed superseded the franchise-tag designation and ensured the Raiders keeping Branch in the fold for the next several seasons.
The Raiders now are more than $6 million under the cap, giving them some much-needed ammunition to re-sign some of their own prospective free agents, as well as some from other teams that are about to hit the open market Tuesday.
Earlier this week, the Raiders freed up more than $2 million by restructuring the contract of right guard Mike Brisiel.
Several other players are being targeted for restructured deals, as well, including quarterback Carson Palmer, defensive tackle Tommy Kelly, free safety Michael Huff and wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey.

    Pryor just ain’t very good.

    ———————–

Maybe to you, but u dont matter. Reggie does. .and Reggie thinks he could be QB and will have open comp.. loves Pryor abilities to be starting Qb..as told to Mike Florio

  • Chris in NY

If we do dump Palmer, I really hope we don’t take Geno Smith in the draft. At that point, see what Pryor can do. If he sux, next year’s draft should have 3 or 4 QBs better than anyone in this year’s draft. If he’s good, then problem solved.

  • Raiders for life

Well, at least the Raiders are keeping Branch and Brisiell. woop de fkn doo.
My faith in Reggie is fading, looks like a repeat of last season. Let the FA’s walk and bring in one year contract scrubs.
Who knows, maybe Reg is trying to trade some of the fat for 7th round picks.
10 and then is starting to look realistic.

That meant nothing. Its because they didnt want to give Pryor a chance

Sure. I keep hearing that. That coaches and GM’s keep their best players hid so that they can, um, so that they, uh, they don’t play them because, uh, you know, that’s the dumbest thing any has said on this blog.

Also Ed Werner said on 95.7 the game it was told to him by sources that Palmer most likely wont be playing in Oakland next year and Reggie has already told the OC and Coach Flip to get PRYOR ready. Ed werner does not b.s.

It’s all conjecture at this point. If he’s gone then he’s gone.

I’m still severely jaded from that big-time free agency splash Big Al had when he hauled in Javon Walker, DeAngelo Hall and Gibril Wilson.

Was hyped when they signed. And utterly embarrassed when each flopped horribly and left the Raiders hurting in the money department.

Sorry I just had the wipe the tears of laughter from my face. Some of you clowns really are unbelievable. OK, so let’s try this again! So, the guys most responsible for winning were keeping Pryor off the field even though he was the best player, and a guy who had nothing to do with the field made the decision to get Pryor on the field, even though the guys in charge, and have built franchises and have multiple world championship credentials somehow don’t know as much as a guy down in LA hundreds of miles from the team. OK, I think I got it down now.

If reg mac took a QB at #3 it would cost more money than keeping Palmer. It would make reg mac look unbrilliant drafting a greenie to replace Palmer. Get Pryor the players he needs and go for it. It all comes down to smart money. Paying Palmer a boat load of dough when he’s gonna retire in five is not smart money when we should be ready in five for the post season. Not my call.

I would love for the Raiders to make a bevy of announcement at 1 p.m. Tuesday — when deals can be finalized.

Players re-signed, free agents brought aboard… however, that doesn’t seem to be Reggie’s MO.

Build through the draft and be selective in free agency.

One big name and a whole bunch of second-tier, role players.

The lack of noise coming out of Alameda is concerning, no doubt.

I’m interested to see the players selected in the draft to the Senior Bowl.

McKenzie and DA talked about how vital it was to coach the game to get insight on players.

Wonder how many of the players coached — and played against — in that game will be Raider picks.

  • http://raiders.com Seymour Bush

So what have we learned today children?

Well, either one of two things: that there was this massive conspiracy to keep our best player off the field, and not be given an opportunity for unknown reasons even tho Pryor himself said how Carson Palmer would work with him, and how 32 entire scouting departments, and countless scouting services somehow were completely wrong, even though by every account they were all 100% right. Pheeeew! You can believe that, or that Pryor really isn’t that good. Take your choice.

  • RaiderDebo

Mike Tannebaum suggested on NFL network that if Detroit loses Avril, they might want our draft choice to jump ahead of Philly and draft Jarvis Jones. That’d be pretty sweet.

We just wondered why knapp played Lienart over Pryor when Lienart was about to get cut and Reggie and mark are high on Pryor since he is our future QB so why didn’t knapp allow DA to play him to see what he could be like with 4 games in his pocket. I think knapp knew Lienart was gonna be let go so he auditioned Lienart for a new gig when in reality Pryor shoulda been getting reps. Just sayin. Whatcha wanna bet Lienart lands in Denver. As a #3.
