Breaking news: Raiders restructure Branch’s contract

By Steve Corkran
Thursday, March 7th, 2013 at 2:23 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders freed up $5 million or so in salary cap room by restructuring the contract of starting strong safety Tyvon Branch on Thursday, according to a person familiar with the situation.
The Raiders reduced Branch’s base salary from $6 million to $715,000 for 2013. In exchange, the Raiders tacked on two seasons to the four-year contract Branch signed last season.
Branch still is in line to earn $6 million in 2013, in large part because of a $3.5 million roster bonus the Raiders honored. The saving comes in the form of reducing Branch’s cap figure from $10.9 million to approximately $6 million.
Branch’s salaries for 2014 and 2015 remain unchanged. However, he now is slated to earn $6.5 million in 2016 and ’17.
Branch was the Raiders franchise-tag player last season. The long-term contract he ultimately signed superseded the franchise-tag designation and ensured the Raiders keeping Branch in the fold for the next several seasons.
The Raiders now are more than $6 million under the cap, giving them some much-needed ammunition to re-sign some of their own prospective free agents, as well as some from other teams that are about to hit the open market Tuesday.
Earlier this week, the Raiders freed up more than $2 million by restructuring the contract of right guard Mike Brisiel.
Several other players are being targeted for restructured deals, as well, including quarterback Carson Palmer, defensive tackle Tommy Kelly, free safety Michael Huff and wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey.

If we do dump Palmer, I really hope we don’t take Geno Smith in the draft. At that point, see what Pryor can do. If he sux, next year’s draft should have 3 or 4 QBs better than anyone in this year’s draft. If he’s good, then problem solved.

    >>>>

Agreed. The 2nd stupidest thing Reggie can do is dump Palmer to save some cap room (when he doesn’t like spending money in free agency anyway.)

The stupidest thing he could do is dump Palmer AND use his top pick on a QB.

He should either play Pryor or keep Palmer. Those are his choices.

SeyBu you funny. We just wondered why knapp played Lienart over Pryor when Lienart was about to get cut and Reggie and mark are high on Pryor since he is our future QB so why didn’t knapp allow DA to play him to see what he could be like with 4 games in his pocket

    >>>>

Don’t you get it? He was Reggie’s hire. Pryor is Al’s.

    See a pattern here yet?

Does anyone here have a clue why Brisiel was restructured? He’s a ZBS specialist coming off a career low season. It makes no sense!

    HE IS REGGIE’S GUY!

I think knapp knew Lienart was gonna be let go so he auditioned Lienart for a new gig when in reality Pryor shoulda been getting reps. Just sayin. Whatcha wanna bet Lienart lands in Denver. As a #3. Just sayin.

I think Leinart was Knapps last ditch effort to save his job…….look what happens if you use my QB……..didnt work!!!

    2012 Raiders …
    - 28th ranked scoring defense.
    - 28th ranked rushing offense.
    - 8th ranked passing offense.

just repeating the trash that shrek and DA are responsible for….

I think D Bryant could be real good. Has the size and strength to be a force.

But something tells me 5 minutes after the Harvard grad gets his guaranteed millions the effort ain’t gonna be there.

Here’s a guy that’s flopping around drunk and getting arrested on the eve of his free agent bonanza.

Warning sign that he doesn’t take his NFL career seriously.

He’s probably laughing his azz off now knowing that he’s gonna get paid regardless.

so if they dump palmer do you think they are just going to hand the keys to pryor….they are going to bring in QB competition….what if we brought in vince young, seneca wallace and kolb…….all those guys might beat pryor

    >>>

I am pretty sure they are BOTH on the way out because Reggie didn’t hire either.

You could be right about an entirely new QB.

Reggie wants to turn this place upside down so he can play with his OWN toys.

    A serious Question.

If we were to trade Pryor today, what draft pick would we get?
    ========================================

I am kind of disappointed. I figured Priest or some other knucklehead would have said by now, Green Bay will give us Aaron Rogers, BJ Raji, 2 number ones and a second rounder for Pryor. And we shouldn’t do it.

Be surprised if the Raiders didn’t have visits/phone calls set up for two Broncos Dumerville (if released) and DJ Williams (released earlier today) due to the DA connections.

Denver CB Chris Harris said on Twitter he wouldn’t be surprised to see DA scoop up DJ Williams.

    ^^^^^^^^^
Getting DJ and Dumervil would be good pickups and ones that needed…badly.

Doubt McK and DA close the deal though.

Leinert is absolutely awful. And was still ahead of Pryor on the depth chart. Pryor just ain’t very good

    ————————-

That meant nothing. Its because they didnt want to give Pryor a chance till Reggie/ Mark according to vic tafaur forced the issue. DA didnt even think Pryor could have got the huddle right.. then what happened? He changed his tune in a hurry said he should have been playing

    __________________________________________

That’s why I think Palmer may have to give way to Pryor. Not that Pryor is better, but he is part of Reggie’s long term plan. Pryor is young enough to fit that role. I do think Palmer could take us to the playoffs if Reggie could spend some money on FA’s and make smart draft picks. We will just have to wait and see. I hope Palmer stays but I don’t see it. I also believe Pryor can handle the load at QB. Reggie and Mark are excited to see Pryor play. That may be all Allen needs to know. With Knapp out of the picture, Pryor will get a legit shot to compete. It looks more and more like Reggie and Mark could put a contender on the field by pre season. I’m certain Mark surrounds himself with bright fiancial people, and the key to fiancial growth and worth is winning. They aim to do that. Winning equates into dollars, and the NFL is business. Mark might not look the part, but he is no dummy.

    ————
After all this time debating between Pryor vs Palmer, only 4 answers so far, surprising. I’ve heard Pryor being mentioned multiple times as a Franchise QB (even “could be possibly the most dynamic player ever”), so it would be interesting to get everyones feedback.

I say damaged goods after looking over PFFs game by game metrics. He had three positive rated games over a 16 game season with us. With Atlanta, he started off with SIX in the first 8 games… and then not a single one after that.

So lets review… 6 of the first 8 games in 2011 positives, zero the next 8 games. Atlanta dumps him. He has 3 in the next 16 games.

Sorry man. DAMAGED GOODS. Atlanta knew it! He only had one negative rated game in 2010.
