Potential targets for Raiders in free agency

By Jerry McDonald

A look at positions of need and players the Raiders might consider when free agency opens at 1 p.m. Tuesday:

Cornerback

The most expensive cornerbacks figure to be Aqib Talib (Patriots) and Sean Smith (Dolphins), with Talib having the most baggage in terms of character but also the most skill. Smith’s size (6-foot-1, 210 pounds) and ability probably put him out of general manager Reggie McKenzie’s price range. Keenan Lewis (Steelers) had an excellent season and is only 26. Brent Grimes (Falcons) is 29 and coming off a torn Achilles, so the Raiders might be reluctant to go in that direction. Greg Toler (Cardinals) is a year removed from an ACL injury and is a year younger than Grimes. Cary Williams (Ravens) held up in coverage on a championship team.

Defensive line

If the Raiders are looking to squeeze a last double-digit sacks season out of a veteran player, John Abraham (Falcons) and Dwight Freeney (Colts) are available, although both probably will be looking to go to a contender. Some names to keep in mind: Elvis Dumervil if Denver declines to pay him the $12 million he is due, and 49ers interior linemen Isaac Sopoaga and Ricky Jean Francois.

Linebacker

Paul Kruger (Ravens) is an option if the Raiders plan to play lots of 3-4 defense and surprise everyone by spending big. Erin Henderson (Vikings) is a two-down player who can stop the run. Lorenzo Alexander (Redskins) is a good locker-room guy and a special-teams standout. Shaun Phillips (Chargers) has been a thorn in the Raiders’ side for years as a pass rusher.

Offensive line

Phil Loadholt (Vikings) would fit nicely at right tackle in the Raiders’ gap and power blocking scheme, but he will be costly. Other players who could get snapped up quickly for big bucks include tackle Sebastian Vollmer (Patriots), tackle Jake Long (Dolphins), tackle Andre Smith (Bengals) and guard Andy Levitre (Bills). The second tier includes tackles Sam Baker (Falcons) and Jermon Bushrod (Saints). The Raiders have seen plenty of AFC West opponent Louis Vasquez (Chargers), who probably would come cheaper than fellow guard Brandon Moore (Jets).

Wide receiver

The Raiders have needed a smart, tough, productive veteran for a few years. Greg Jennings (Packers) has a history with McKenzie.

Tight end

Jared Cook (Titans) hasn’t had the kind of production to match his talent, and Tony Gonzalez (Falcons) reportedly wants to avoid training camp altogether not to mention make $7 million. Fred Davis (Redskins) is on the mend from a torn Achilles and could be had at a decent price. Delanie Walker (49ers) isn’t a move-the-chains receiver but is a punishing blocker, a special-teams player and a locker-room guy.

Running back

The Raiders need a reliable backup. Ahmad Bradshaw (Giants) has been productive in that role. Michael Turner (Falcons) is past his prime but could be a factor in a reduced role.

Quarterback

Presuming Carson Palmer returns, the Raiders are looking for a third quarterback to go along with Terrelle Pryor. Quarterbacks on the market include Jason Campbell (Bears), Tarvaris Jackson (Bills) and Drew Stanton (Colts).

    For all the Reggie apologists

we can’t just sit around and watch all the good players get taken so Reggie goes dumpster diving on average castaways and guys with injuries.

    ***

    Attn: Chris in NY

I’m a Reggie supporter. “apologists” applies that he’s not doing a good job and that we’re making excuses for him.

I think he’s doing a great job. no excuses needed!

Yes – we will be looking at free agents for vet minimum that nobody else wants. We’ll also be looking to unload players for draft picks. I think we might have a record number of rookies (drafted & undrafted) make this year’s 53 man roster

Free Agency starts in 5 minutes. Just because Reggie hasn’t signed somebody to a $30 million contract doesn’t mean he’s lazy or doesn’t care. pfft

If memory serves me we all thought there would be a flurry of activity and the NFL ESPN heads had it all built up and nothing happened.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports members of the Vikings’ organization “aren’t thrilled” with GM Rick Spielman’s decision to cut Antoine Winfield.
Winfield has been the best slot corner in football several seasons running. “It’s a move backwards,” is how one club official characterized the move. Despite his age — 36 in June — Winfield immediately becomes a top-ten cornerback available in free agency. We’d rank them like this: 1) Aqib Talib 2) Sean Smith 3) Brent Grimes 4) Winfield 5) Keenan Lewis 6) Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie 7) Derek Cox 8) Chris Houston 9) Antoine Cason 10) DeAngelo Hall.

FA’s were signed over weeks not in 45 minutes when it opens. Last year it was built up just like this year and it sizzled out.

In other words I am not expecting to read of a bunch of FA’s signed by anyone today

You probably have to have a good D coordinator and the right player to do this, but can’t we move a cb to safety and have it work. it has worked before, usually they wait for the cb to lose his corner abilities but we don’t have a ton of guys with corner ability on this team, anyone who can move to safety? ross looked a lot better at safety than cb to me.

The New York Daily News reports the Jets are targeting free agent RB Mike Goodson as Shonn Greene’s replacement.
The Jets have no money to spend, so they have to target second- and third-tier players. Goodson does have good burst, and he’d be a decent complement to Bilal Powell. However, he can’t carry a full load, and hasn’t received more than 15 carries in a game since 2010.

how could u even be sure that the raiders knew about the ravens trading boldin. they could have been waiting like most teams to try and sign him once he was cut, not knowing he was even considered being traded. Harbaugh connection could have been at work there. and DMc is only 26 he is the same age as foster, rice, charles, lynch and younger than chris johnson , AP, forte, bush, gore, etc. the only good rbs that are younger than him are trent richardson 21, doug martin 24, mccoy 24, murray 25, morris 24. DMC still has plenty of years left in him. it’s up to the caching staff and trainers to get the best out of those years.
