Potential targets for Raiders in free agency

By Jerry McDonald

A look at positions of need and players the Raiders might consider when free agency opens at 1 p.m. Tuesday:

Cornerback

The most expensive cornerbacks figure to be Aqib Talib (Patriots) and Sean Smith (Dolphins), with Talib having the most baggage in terms of character but also the most skill. Smith’s size (6-foot-1, 210 pounds) and ability probably put him out of general manager Reggie McKenzie’s price range. Keenan Lewis (Steelers) had an excellent season and is only 26. Brent Grimes (Falcons) is 29 and coming off a torn Achilles, so the Raiders might be reluctant to go in that direction. Greg Toler (Cardinals) is a year removed from an ACL injury and is a year younger than Grimes. Cary Williams (Ravens) held up in coverage on a championship team.

Defensive line

If the Raiders are looking to squeeze a last double-digit sacks season out of a veteran player, John Abraham (Falcons) and Dwight Freeney (Colts) are available, although both probably will be looking to go to a contender. Some names to keep in mind: Elvis Dumervil if Denver declines to pay him the $12 million he is due, and 49ers interior linemen Isaac Sopoaga and Ricky Jean Francois.

Linebacker

Paul Kruger (Ravens) is an option if the Raiders plan to play lots of 3-4 defense and surprise everyone by spending big. Erin Henderson (Vikings) is a two-down player who can stop the run. Lorenzo Alexander (Redskins) is a good locker-room guy and a special-teams standout. Shaun Phillips (Chargers) has been a thorn in the Raiders’ side for years as a pass rusher.

Offensive line

Phil Loadholt (Vikings) would fit nicely at right tackle in the Raiders’ gap and power blocking scheme, but he will be costly. Other players who could get snapped up quickly for big bucks include tackle Sebastian Vollmer (Patriots), tackle Jake Long (Dolphins), tackle Andre Smith (Bengals) and guard Andy Levitre (Bills). The second tier includes tackles Sam Baker (Falcons) and Jermon Bushrod (Saints). The Raiders have seen plenty of AFC West opponent Louis Vasquez (Chargers), who probably would come cheaper than fellow guard Brandon Moore (Jets).

Wide receiver

The Raiders have needed a smart, tough, productive veteran for a few years. Greg Jennings (Packers) has a history with McKenzie.

Tight end

Jared Cook (Titans) hasn’t had the kind of production to match his talent, and Tony Gonzalez (Falcons) reportedly wants to avoid training camp altogether not to mention make $7 million. Fred Davis (Redskins) is on the mend from a torn Achilles and could be had at a decent price. Delanie Walker (49ers) isn’t a move-the-chains receiver but is a punishing blocker, a special-teams player and a locker-room guy.

Running back

The Raiders need a reliable backup. Ahmad Bradshaw (Giants) has been productive in that role. Michael Turner (Falcons) is past his prime but could be a factor in a reduced role.

Quarterback

Presuming Carson Palmer returns, the Raiders are looking for a third quarterback to go along with Terrelle Pryor. Quarterbacks on the market include Jason Campbell (Bears), Tarvaris Jackson (Bills) and Drew Stanton (Colts).

Well, free agency is underway for most teams and here we lay like a big ol’ turd log… just like last year.

This team just isn’t fun in the offseason anymore like it used to be with Al. But hey, we’ll get a couple of banged up corners and some washed up OL guy that no one else wants, Reg will shove some square pegs in some round holes and we’ll go to work this season!

Well Barkley would be throwing to NFL caliber WRs in the pros, so what’s the difference?

The guy was pretty much a consensus Heisman candidate and target for he #1 overall pick. You sure it wasn’t the Kiffin’s for USC like it was Knapp for Oakland?

    ===========

his best year was with kiffin also. so u can discount that. there is a difference throwing to nfl caliber receivers against college D’s and throwing to nfl caliber receivers against nfl DB’s u cant always rely on throwing it up in the air and having marquise lee burn the defender by 5 yds and get the ball. that just rarely happens in the nfl. Ask Matt Leinhart. Or Mark Sanchez. he racks up a lot of yardage against garbage teams. his numbers against quality teams are alright, nothing special. against pac 10 teams he thrw 26 tds and 14 ints, take away colorado who was 1-11 he only has 20 tds and 14 ints, take away utah who was 5-7 and he only has 17td and 14 ints. he threw for 95% completions against colorado with 6 tds and 0 ints, he threw for 48% against stanford 0 td, 2 ints. He domoinated weak @ss teams and struggled against good defenses. his one good game against a good team was against oregon, and oregon doesnt have a great defense and they were playing from behind the whole game.

Appearing on NFL Live Tuesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the Titans have jumped into the running for free agent Danny Amendola.

  • Raider8

People rip on Al for leaving a mess and making bad moves but alot of his moves were fine it was just once a guy got to Oakland they misused him.

DeAngelo Hall sucked when he was here but did fine w. Washington..Randy Moss comes to mind too.

At least Al tried to do something. Sitting on your big butt and being scared to do anything is no way to run a franchise.

No risk no reward and 2-14 staring you in the face.

If Oakland doesn’t wanna do anything than just fold the damn franchise and call it a day.

Raiders need to find a TE that can block! Meyers was horrible at setting the edge in the blocking.

One of the main reasons DMAC could never get to the corner on the sweeps without being stuffed. Remember that long run last year vs the JETS?? DMAC on 75 yards cuz the edge was sealed off.

Wink wink my àss. They have an owner to answer to. Reggie was asleep in a pool of syrup yesterday. Boldin should be a raider and we should all be geeking over next yrs offense…

    ====================================
Correct me if Im wrong, but didnt Boldin also have $6 Million left on his contract as well…. So SF is really giving a 6th rounder and $6 Million. Of course Im not sure how much of that is going to be a cap hit. My point is, with his contract, maybe it was an afordable option for the Raiders.

  • NGRaiderfan

You guys act like we’re the only team w a salary cap.

Pitt’s in a horrible position and there are many others.

Oh we’re fine…Reggie’s building the right way.

First it’s 4-12 then 2-14 then maybe 4-12 again then maybe 6-10 then we’ll have to regroup of course and drop down to 1-15 before we can really start making some moves.

Hard to get a new stadium when only 22,000 are showing up for your games.
