Raiders release Heyward-Bey, Huff, Tollefson

By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, March 12th, 2013 at 5:04 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders massive overhaul reached a fevered pitch Tuesday with the release of the following veterans: wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, free safety Michael Huff and defensive lineman Dave Tollefson.
By releasing Huff, the Raiders increased their salary cap room for 2013. It’s going to take some time to sort through the numbers. They started the day $8.5 million under the cap.
Huff was slated to earn $11.288 million in 2013, with $4 million in base salary, a $4 million roster bonus and the rest as the prorated portion of his signing bonus.
The Raiders re-signed Huff in 2011 to a contract that guaranteed him $16 million. He turned in one of his best seasons last year, much of his handiwork coming after he converted to cornerback after injuries to starters Ron Bartell and Shawntae Spencer.
The Raiders said Huff was moving back to free safety in 2013. Now he’s just moving on, though the Raiders still could attempt to re-sign him again.
Heyward-Bey had a cap figure of $10.6 million for 2013, with $7.721 million of that in base salary. There was no way the Raiders were going to pay that kind of money for a player who hasn’t materialized into the kind of player they envisioned when they selected him No. 7 in the 2009 NFL draft.
The Raiders signed Tollefson last season and handed him a two-year, $3 million contract. Tollefson failed to get much of an opportunity in first-year defensive coordinator Jason Tarver’s scheme, so his dismissal doesn’t come as much of a surprise.
The Raiders also confirmed that they re-signed cornerback Phillip Adams to a one-year contract. He was Oakland’s lone restricted free agent. He received a contract worth $630.000.
Surprisingly, the Raiders didn’t release middle linebacker Rolando McClain or defensive tackle Tommy Kelly on Tuesday, even though they aren’t in a position where they need to made a move.
Even so, it’s likely that McClain will be jettisoned any day. Kelly might be kept around as long as the Raiders are so thin at defensive tackle — Richard Seymour and Desmond Bryant are testing the free-agent market.

Whats all this bull sch1tt talk about rebuilding. All I see is demolishing with no plan. It’s like a fabricated witch hunt. DHB had fcking steel balls. Palmer is going to be rendered useless by default and Pryor is going to have to run for his life when there is no one to throw the ball to.

Right now with what is going on proves that Reggie is going to be around for a very long time. And Mark is fully behind these decisions. He knows what is going on.

Rome is being burnt to the ground and completely rebuilt. This is a 3-4 year process. Long over due.

Keep saying “fire Reggie” and cracking your lame pancake jokes because he is going to end up laughing when all is said and done.

    =========

Is that why he’s called out Reggie’s coaching hire 3 times in the past year? Keep denying Shreg has shown NO eye for talent, Bergstrom sucks, Burris was graded the worst OLB in the league, Brisel was near the bottom for guards, Criner can’t get open, he let our best DT go, but hey we got Streeter!

Soon they will play there home games at the local civic center that holds 5,000 people.

raiders are 23 mil under the cap as of now. under the new cba dead money can be split in 2 years for up to 2 players per team. 23 mil under the cap before kelly and mcclain cuts. maybe i was wrong and they are stripping and rebiulding around carson….if thats true and it works i will be the first to admit im a bad gm

I’m not sure if i’m alone, but I really do like the fact that this team is letting these players go. As fans we tend to overrate our guys….but lets face it, this team has been garbage for quite some time….and these players have all been a part of it. We need to knock it down to the foundation and build it back up through the draft and with “smart” free agent signings. We went for “name” free agents since 1994 and it hasn’t done us any good. For those of you calling for Reggie’s head and complaining about Dennis Allen…seriously, can we give these guys a few years to see what they can do? I mean, people want to talk about Indy and other teams that came back after 1 year of being down….but no team has been so cap strapped, like the Raiders. I love this team just as much as you the rest of you, but I think we need to show some patience.

    KAPOW!

DHB gone – thankfully now Streater can be on the field fulltime.

Bit surprised about Huff – he’s underperformed his contract but not a bust thought he’d back – ability to play CB helps him. He prob refused to restructure. He’ll be picked up pretty quick.

Ah well, looking like they are really cleaning house. Let’s get the mess cleaned up and take it on the chin this year so we can have strong 2014.

Dhb was our most productive reciever these past 2 years wether you want to believe it or not, bryant was by far our best dt this season and we lost him, phillip wheeler was our best lb and we lost him, for half the season huff graded out as our best cb and we lost him… Yes we’re saving money but the goal isnt to save money its to build a team of players that can win games. Its cool to cut them if thats what you want to do but if you dont have the proper replacements then youre just wasting your time. You have to spend money to make money.

    ———————————

    Take your logic elsewhere.

No team has spent more than the Raiders, and it hasn’t worked.

Spending more doesn’t always = more wins.

Selecting quality players would be a good start.

I think they are sitting on Romac until June 1st. You can only designate 2 players with the June 1st tag if cut prior to that. DHB and Huff could be those guys, with Romac being held in limbo until then. Kelly may stick with how thin we are at DT
    =======================================================

If you want to do right by a guy that did right by you, you cut him asap so he can hook up for maximum $$ elsewhere. Romac ain’t that guy. Let him sit and stew. Like he said, he’s got 24 million reasons not to give a sh1t.

  • riderm

I live in Charlotte, Panthers released OLB James Anderson. Wouldn’t mind seeing him as a Raider.

  • Dakota

Bryant and wheeler were not worth those deals, but we now have so many holes that with the two decent picks we have in the draft there is no way we can fill out a decent roster, so. We might as well jettison everyone who is taking up big cap space.

At this point what was the point of firing knapp and company? If the goal is to lose game they should have been left in place.

I predicted he would get 5 mill a year last night, but I figured Reggie would pay it.

Now Bryant is gone too? At least Houston wasn’t a free agent or there wouldn’t be a positive PFF-rated defensive player left on our roster!

What is Reggie saving his money for? Dumpster diving the entire defense? This is a grease fire! I figured Reggie would sign one of the two!

Wow they gutted this thing to the fullest this new regime is absolute sch!t fire Mumbles fire DA this is a joke we r the laughing stock of the NFL again this team is gonna win 2 games next year doesn’t matter who our QB is this team is doomed we are officially playing for the Clowney sweepstakes

  • RaiderfanNY

The one good thing about today is that the Raiders are now the clear favorite to get the number one pick in 2014: Jadeveon Clowney.

We had the worst roster in the league last season. With Wheeler and Bryant gone — and Huff and Myers likely to follow — we will be impossibly bad next year. The defense will be horrifying. And the division will be much stronger.

Reggie seems to be tanking 2014 to get the cap situation under control. But will he be around after 1-15? The worst is yet to come…

  • CDERaider

Looks like we lost DezBryant (Browns) and Wheeler (Miami).. sux.. Starting over (again).

  • Jackie Bibby

Reggie is awful, you have to sign your own before they hit fa because you know other teams are going to offer ridiculous numbers. Why let them test the market knowing you dont have the cap space to battle in that arena? Sign the players you want ahead of time. Smh lack of attention to detail on mumbles part.. He is as dumb as he looks.

the biggest problem was the players it was the constant hiring of unqualified coaching staff and the resulting coach and scheme turnover that was the problem…..pick a highly qualified staff and stick to a friggin scheme for more than 3 years and get players that fit and develop into a TEAM……..this team has always been piece meal and reggie continued that trend……..once we realize DA is not the solution the merry go round will spin a couple more times again
