Raiders release Heyward-Bey, Huff, Tollefson

By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, March 12th, 2013 at 5:04 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders massive overhaul reached a fevered pitch Tuesday with the release of the following veterans: wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, free safety Michael Huff and defensive lineman Dave Tollefson.
By releasing Huff, the Raiders increased their salary cap room for 2013. It’s going to take some time to sort through the numbers. They started the day $8.5 million under the cap.
Huff was slated to earn $11.288 million in 2013, with $4 million in base salary, a $4 million roster bonus and the rest as the prorated portion of his signing bonus.
The Raiders re-signed Huff in 2011 to a contract that guaranteed him $16 million. He turned in one of his best seasons last year, much of his handiwork coming after he converted to cornerback after injuries to starters Ron Bartell and Shawntae Spencer.
The Raiders said Huff was moving back to free safety in 2013. Now he’s just moving on, though the Raiders still could attempt to re-sign him again.
Heyward-Bey had a cap figure of $10.6 million for 2013, with $7.721 million of that in base salary. There was no way the Raiders were going to pay that kind of money for a player who hasn’t materialized into the kind of player they envisioned when they selected him No. 7 in the 2009 NFL draft.
The Raiders signed Tollefson last season and handed him a two-year, $3 million contract. Tollefson failed to get much of an opportunity in first-year defensive coordinator Jason Tarver’s scheme, so his dismissal doesn’t come as much of a surprise.
The Raiders also confirmed that they re-signed cornerback Phillip Adams to a one-year contract. He was Oakland’s lone restricted free agent. He received a contract worth $630.000.
Surprisingly, the Raiders didn’t release middle linebacker Rolando McClain or defensive tackle Tommy Kelly on Tuesday, even though they aren’t in a position where they need to made a move.
Even so, it’s likely that McClain will be jettisoned any day. Kelly might be kept around as long as the Raiders are so thin at defensive tackle — Richard Seymour and Desmond Bryant are testing the free-agent market.

BTW, how did we have one of the worst rosters last year when Bryant & Wheeler get huge paydays?

  • jackasspuria

So Ellerbe and Wheeler take the place of older and released Dansby and Burnett at linebacker for the Dolphins.

Fins spent almost all of their cap space on Day 1 of free agency.

We Raider fans have never seen this before, I can safely say. Wow!

A paradigm shift, to be sure.

How do you judge a guy who had to wait till the end of the third round to pick in the draft and then what a couple 5th rounders. Wow come on people . So many will owe Reggie an apology. You guys should do a whose who with names of against reggie and then when this team is better in a year or two. because we havent been good in what almost ten years….. And we never rebuilt the team. Just kept adding high price free agents every year and dafting horribly. Let the man do his job and give him some room.

  • Dunno Raider

    1-15.

Budget players combined with low level coaching. And 1 win may be a little generous.

We don’t need Fitzpatrick DHD is gone GOOD

    Fitzpatrick as a noodle arm

    DHB was never good

and Carson will be our quarterback???????????????????????????????

I like the scene Wheeler stick around

That really upsets me whats next, are you going to let Bryant go and keep TK?

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Gone. Bryant is a Brown. I have no idea wtf these guys r doing. Gonna try and clear 20 million and sign a ton of FAs? That worked great for Philly a few years ago. What a mess.

  • SaneRaiderFan

how do we know that DA isn’t the answer? One year? Really? We could never get a highly qualified staff in the past…..Al Davis would never allow it.

  • http://www.Raiders.com KoolKell

    Giordano could take Huff’s place.

  • RaidO

Keeping Palmer would be stupid and disrespectful to Raider fans. If they are going to rebuild then frickin rebuild.

  • ESETERIK78

This needed to happen. Sure, Wheeler and Bryant were decent, but I’m not crying about it.

Wish DHB well. I actually think he performed better than I expected, because looking at his college production I didn’t expect much.

Looks like we lost DezBryant (Browns) and Wheeler (Miami).. sux.. Starting over (again).

    ^^^^^^^^
Their agents knew they would get paid somewhere else and they both probably didn’t want to play here under DA…Simple.

    ********************************************************

I agree with the first part, but not the second. It’s a business. Players say that all the time. Neither Bryant nor Wheeler had gotten that big contract yet. This was (maybe) the only chance they were going to get. The Raiders couldn’t pay them as much as the Browns and Dolphins, so they did what was best for themselves and their families.

It’s not like they’re taking less money to go to a contender. It’s the Dolphins and the Browns.

  • SR Raider

Slash and burn! Paying the price for Al’s ridiculous contracts. Hope this all puts us in good shape for 2014. Let the firings continue untile morale improves…

I’m not sure if i’m alone, but I really do like the fact that this team is letting these players go. As fans we tend to overrate our guys….but lets face it, this team has been garbage for quite some time….and these players have all been a part of it. We need to knock it down to the foundation and build it back up through the draft and with “smart” free agent signings. We went for “name” free agents since 1994 and it hasn’t done us any good. For those of you calling for Reggie’s head and complaining about Dennis Allen…seriously, can we give these guys a few years to see what they can do? I mean, people want to talk about Indy and other teams that came back after 1 year of being down….but no team has been so cap strapped, like the Raiders. I love this team just as much as you the rest of you, but I think we need to show some patience.
    ====================================
the biggest problem was the players it was the constant hiring of unqualified coaching staff and the resulting coach and scheme turnover that was the problem…..pick a highly qualified staff and stick to a friggin scheme for more than 3 years and get players that fit and develop into a TEAM……..this team has always been piece meal and reggie continued that trend……..once we realize DA is not the solution the merry go round will spin a couple more times again

we’ve been the laughing stock for about 9 years now….what’s another year or two? We knew this thing had to be gutted…I don’t want to win 8 games or 12 games one year and 6 the next….i want to contend every year. You need smart depth, not just a couple of names. Instead of adding players we are subtracting players. Hope they have a plan in place.

  • Jackie Bibby

@ Esterik if you want to drink the cool aid go ahead. But I have every right to state my logic on this blog as everyone else so I dont have to take it anywhere, but if you dont agree just say you dont agree. With that being said, I never said dhb was larry fitz, or that wheeler was ray lewis, I simply stated they were the most productive at their positions. The point I was trying to make is you get better by adding talent to your roster not subtracting the little talent you do have. Huff wasnt great but hes sure as hell better than spencer, pat lee, and ron bartell all guys your boy mumbles brought in.

  • devilr8er

Thanks Hue for the Palmer trade. His contract really hampers us from moving forward in free agency and on top of that we give up a 1st and 2nd. one of the worst trades ever for the Raider organization.

If someone had told me Reggie refused to sign BOTH Wheeler and Bryant I would have laughed and pointed.

We now have ONE positive rated player on our entire defense. Houston.

And a GM that refuses to spend money.

Just as well dump Palmer too… even Drew Brees couldn’t score enough points to overcome the worst defense in the NFL.

You guys should stop wasting your time with this blog and start working out. There’s like mad roster spots available on the Raiders. I absolutely love what I’m seeing from Reggie and the front office! Great job guys!
Get these no good bums out of here….let these other teams overpay and waste money on players not worth it like we used to do. Cleveland signs Desmond Bryant, good bye and good riddance. I’m sure they’ll love him when the Steelers whip the Browns and he’s smiling on the sidelines in the final minutes. Darrius Heyward-Bey — was never any better than below average WR — geez I’m sure we can’t do any better than him. Peace out Huff I’ll miss watching you give up 40 yard TD passes.
I think it’s comical to see everybody in here whining and complaining. Our team has been GARBAGE forever because we used to be the ones like Miami and Cleveland doing this stupid crap and overbidding for free agents.
This is how good teams are built in the NFL and Reggie is cleaning up the mess. We will build through the draft and sign free agents of value. You people need to show some patience. Just look, Miami blows money today then cuts to very solid LB’s because of it, and those are the type of players that are going to be all over the place throughout the league tomorrow that we swoop in and get for great deals.
Keep up the good work Raiders front office…it’s about time we are on the small list of smart teams doing it the right way.
