Update on Raiders moves in terms of salary cap

The Raiders entered Tuesday $8.5 million under the salary cap. Releasing free safety Michael Huff, wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey and defensive lineman Dave Tollefson freed up an additional $8.75 million in cap room.
Factoring in the Raiders re-signing cornerback Phillip Adams to a one-year contract, the Raiders are flush with approximately $16 million in cap space for 2013, even though they have an astonishing $32 million in dead money — money accounted for on players no longer on the roster.
The Raiders saved the following amounts with their three roster moves Tuesday: $5.34 million on Heyward-Bey, $1.79 million on Huff and $1.6 million on Tollefson.
That’s the positive news. On the downside, the Raiders lost a player some considered their best all-around defensive back — Huff played free safety and cornerback for the Raiders last season — and one of their most productive wide receivers at a time when they are thin at that position.
Worse for the Raiders, outside lineback Philip Wheeler signed with the Miami Dolphins and defensive lineman Desmond Bryant hooked on with the Cleveland Browns. Bryant and Wheeler were two of Oakland’s most consistent players last season.
In other words, the Raiders have some money to spend and a ton of needs to spend it on. They can free up even more money by releasing or restructuing the likes of quarerback Carson Palmer, linebacker Rolando McClain and defensive tackle Tommy Kelly.
For those wondering why the Raiders didn’t cut McClain on Tuseday, it’s simple: They didn’t have to and there’s still a chance, albeit slim, that another team will pony up a late-round draft pick for McClain.
Hey, it’s worth a shot.

    Well, OAK #3 pick has big value now that Buffalo let FItz go….. they need a QB, Arizona as well and one can trade for Carson and one could trade down for #3 for geno.

    WIn, win.

    Possible.

    I don’t feel like arguing about whether Reggie is fat bumbling retard or if he is doing a good job anymore. There is about as much reason to argue that as to argue whether or not God exists.

    =========================================

    If we sign Vince Young and cut CP? We would officially have no drop-back passers on the roster, but we would have two mobile guys who successfully ran the read option in college and have that skill set.

    Who cares if VY signs. You guys are complaining about VY or any other LOW COST no risk free agent is like someone complaining about the loaner car while your car is in the shop for repairs.

    ==============

    exactly

    If carson stays vy will be penciled in as a backup probably number 3

    if carson goes vy is the back up for pryor

    Looking around the nfl vy will be one of the most experienced and talented back ups in football.

    We play our cards right, we could be the first NFL team to still be able to field a starting 53 man roster and half of the cap as dead money. That’s quite a feat.

    bwahahahahaha. Young has 60 starts in 6 years. Kyle Boller has more experience and better numbers. And Young got worse and worse and worse as his career went on. Which is exactly what happens to guys that can’t play the position. Terrel Pryor, looking your way here.

    NFL teams’ websites are usually run by someone in the marketing department and aren’t always kept up to date in the offseason. I was told awhile back that the only source that reprints the official NFL transaction wire is ProFootballWeekly.com.

    Free agent LB Nick Roach will visit the Raiders.
    Signs of human activity in Oakland. Supposedly drawing interest from over a “half-dozen” teams, Roach could man the strong-side in Oakland, or perhaps even replace Rolando McClain in the middle. Oakland is his first known visit.

    Now there’s another one to take off the “Reggie Victory Board”….Goodson.

    Averaged over 6 ypc. (in limited action) but made some big plays and looked like one of Reggie’s “winners”, but like Wheeler…turns out to be just another lucky guess on Reggie’s part or else he would’ve locked him up for more than one yr.
