Veteran LB visiting Raiders, Adams not tendered contract

Former Cleveland Browns linebacker Kaluka Maiava is scheduled to visit the Raiders at some point this week, according to an NFL Network Tweet.
Maiava started 13 games for the Browns last season, registering 53 tackles and three sacks. He has started 22 of the 50 games he played in during his four-year NFL career, all with the Browns.
Maiava, 6-foot and 229 pounds, played his collegiate ball at USC. The Raiders are thin at linebacker, with the expected release of Rolando McClain and the face Philip Wheeler and Omar Gaither are unrestricted free agents.
Given the Raiders are only $8.5 million under the salary cap right now, mid-level players such as Maiava are the kind of players general manager Reggie McKenzie figures to target, for the most part, in free agency.
In other news, the Raiders opted against tendering a one-year contract to cornerback Phillip Adams. He was Oakland’s lone restricted free agent.

I’m cool with getting under-the-radar hard working football players on day 2+ (exactly what I figured would happen) but to not make an attempt to lock up our own guys or tender Adams??
The market was set over the weekend for Bryant, Wheeler, etc. as I’m sure they were talking numbers with other teams.

Antonio Garay – DL – Free Agent
Chargers released NT Antonio Garay.
Garay was due $5 million in 2013, and this move was a formality. The Chargers are interested in bringing back free agent Aubrayo Franklin to man the nose. Garay, 33, recorded just 16 tackles in eight games played last season.

Bradley was a colossal bust in Arizona, and was just released by the team earlier this month. Denver has a hole at middle linebacker, and they might offer him a chance to compete with Nate Irving for the job.

Given that the Raiders are already $8 million under the salary cap, players with large contracts such as quarterback Carson Palmer ($13 million salary, $15 million cap number, Tommy Kelly ($6.5 million salary, $9.4 million cap number) and wide receiver Darrius Heyward Bey ($7.7 million salary, $10.6 million cap number) can be dealt with when the Raiders need room to sign more players.

I don’t think many, if any at all, are saying the Raiders need to go sign flashy, overpriced guys to 8-figure deals. But how about finding a starting TE, OR a starting RT, OR a starting CB, OR some kind of pass rusher, OR a starting LB, OR locking up our own good players (Bryant, Wheeler, etc.).
What are these guys even doing to make this team better? So far they’ve taken us from 8-8 to 4-12 and signed a bunch of scrap heap guys who are no longer with the team, or whiffed on big expenditures like Brisiel and Branch.
This thing could easily get Art Shell Part II bad, real quick.

If Seattle figured it would take their 1st and a 3rd to move up high enough to get the top receiver in this year’s draft, this was a good move, especially if they’ve determined that Harvin is heads and shoulders above that player. The guy is only 24 years old and the Seahawks are good enough to win it all now. I like the move for both sides.

I’ve been all for keeping Palmer all along because I knew how we could get to $30 mil under the cap (cut McClain and TK, restructure DHB, Huff and Palmer) and make some real moves.
But if we’re just going to throw in the towel like this and not be serious about getting better in any way at all then I guess there would be not much point in paying for a quality QB like CP3.
Looks like after being within a play or two of the playoffs under Hue a season ago, we went to a zero-identity 4-12 embarrassment and will now collapse into a fullon expansion team. Great.-

This is what I just don’t get and cannot figure out. Why pay Palmer all that money just to surround him with the pickings from Green Bays dumpster. Or FA that NOBODY else wanted. FAs that you can get for a dime on the dollar.
Free up his slary and give the ball to Pryor. At least he can run with it, cuz he will need to.

I understand that third tier free agents and undrafted free agents are better than many players on our roster…..but still, throw us a bone and sign one decent player.
There were lots of free agent TEs out there….now we are rolling into 2013 with Ausberry? Cripes.

Raiders re-signed CB Phillip Adams to a one-year, $630,000 contract.
Oakland declined to tender Adams as an RFA earlier in the day. That would have paid him $1.323 million, so they save a little more than half that by re-upping him. Adams was arguably the Raiders’ best corner in 2012, which isn’t saying much. He could have a chance to start this season.

Build through the draft Reggie, It can solve both the salary/cap problems we have and if we draft well we can have a good solid team. Al had a way of working the cap and getting big signings and trades but I think Reggie wants to build the core of the team first and layer it year by year, but first he needs to release the decay all around.

To all the ppl sticking up for reggie, cmon man… Reggiies had ample time since the season ended to make calls and restructure contracts. Our season ended very early so theres no excuse for him to not have us in position to make any moves in free agency. Its his job to have the team ready to make moves on important deadlines so we can keep up with the competition. In 4 months since the season ended you mean to tell me he could only manage to restructure 2 contracts (branch, briese)? He should have had all his restructures done before today but hes an awful gm. I honestly believe there are people on this blog who could do a better job.

I’ve been all for keeping Palmer all along because I knew how we could get to $30 mil under the cap (cut McClain and TK, restructure DHB, Huff and Palmer) and make some real moves.
But if we’re just going to throw in the towel like this and not be serious about getting better in any way at all then I guess there would be not much point in paying for a quality QB like CP3.
Looks like after being within a play or two of the playoffs under Hue a season ago, we went to a zero-identity 4-12 embarrassment and will now collapse into a fullon expansion team. Great.-

Raiders re-signed CB Phillip Adams to a one-year, $630,000 contract.
Oakland declined to tender Adams as an RFA earlier in the day. That would have paid him $1.323 million, so they save a little more than half that by re-upping him. Adams was arguably the Raiders’ best corner in 2012, which isn’t saying much. He could have a chance to start this season.

It’s nothing short of stunning that the Colts are paying him $4 million a year, but Walden was told the club gave him “every expectation” he’ll be the 2013 starter opposite Robert Mathis. The Packers didn’t think much of Walden and tend to be awfully savvy player evaluators. This looks like one of the bigger overpays of the free-agency period so far.

There is not one free agent on the Raiders that was worth the contract they had with the exception of Wheeler.

Who knows what he was asking so he can look as well.
Lechler is a solid performer who will NEVER get another ridiculous contract that he got in Oakland.

I think DHB will be a casualty. Making too much, current staff doesnt know how to use him, and Reggie has zero emotional tie to him and will feel he is easily replaceable. I like the guy and hope he learns how to catch. He can be dangerous for another team. He is a YAC monster, no one can deny that.

At least Adams got hurt while making a great play in the backfield on a blitz.
As opposed to Gio getting hurt when getting burnt, DHB getting hurt while jumping and dropping a pass in his midsection, Palmer while fumbling, Seymour while practicing or McFadden while slipping.

An NFL source tells the Green Bay Press-Gazette free agent Greg Jennings could return to the Packers if he hasn’t signed with another team by midnight Wednesday.
It implies Jennings has a standing offer from the Packers, one he might take if no one betters it over the next six hours. It would be a thudding end to free agency for a player who’s spent weeks publicly pumping up his stock, but perhaps best for all involved.

Dansby is a good illustration of the musical chairs that will be going on over the next two weeks. It seems like a lot of teams are just sitting and waiting. Waiting for the guy who needs to sign but all the teams are out of money or have filled their rosters. Note not much out of Green Bay or Baltimore (except for all the people they are losing).#1 and #2 front offices in Kells article he linked.

Adams did not take a paycut. We did not use our tender on him.
As for predictions:
Our biggest FA signing will be a RT but I am not sure who just yet. We will also sign a decent corner, another corner and a MLB besides Gaither. Our biggest move will be to trade down and accumumlate picks as teams get in bidding war over Millner. A lot of this is based on hope because it presupposes a good value at RT and bidding war for Millner at #3 as opposed to #2 or #1.
Unfortunately I think Bryant, Wheeler and Meyers all move on and we bring in some 2nd teir FAs to fill in but it will not be equal.

Yes the value of a FA goes down as you go deeper into FA. If you want to keep him you hang on until there is a roster bonus due like we did with Wimbly. That gives the team more leverage. That is why we have not cut Bey, Kelly or Palmer (if we are even thinkking of that). Surprised about Slowlando though.

Combo platters could include Palmers contract, and the benefits of dumping romo or DHB trade options.

He means he is not going to spend a lot of money on other peoples reject free agents.
he also isnt going to try and make a splashy signing for headlines
I am fine with it. Get young players in the draft and let other teams overspend
I also like the idea of cutting players like kelly and palmer aging under achievers that are way over paid for their production.
Funny though i notice that many people ripping reggie today are also the same guys that ripped davis for spending like no tomorrow
this place is flat out weird at times
I understand what he meant but be honest do you see a legitimate player worth the #3 pick? I don’t think so! What this Buffon should be doing is trading out of this 3rd pick and also going after key positions like DT, DE, CB, OG through free agency since none of these positions are worth taking at #3! Hopefully he would pick up additional picks by doing so. Now that’s how he would build team through draft just like them fortyphagets.

Nick Roach would be real nice. The type of player I expected Reggie would be good at finding, considering all the hype about his “eye for talent”. Roach is the reason CHI is ready to move on from Urlacher. He’s been under the radar, and thats how CHI wanted to keep it, but I think hes going to make a little change somewhere. Hopefully its here.
