Veteran LB visiting Raiders, Adams not tendered contract

By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, March 12th, 2013 at 1:46 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Former Cleveland Browns linebacker Kaluka Maiava is scheduled to visit the Raiders at some point this week, according to an NFL Network Tweet.
Maiava started 13 games for the Browns last season, registering 53 tackles and three sacks. He has started 22 of the 50 games he played in during his four-year NFL career, all with the Browns.
Maiava, 6-foot and 229 pounds, played his collegiate ball at USC. The Raiders are thin at linebacker, with the expected release of Rolando McClain and the face Philip Wheeler and Omar Gaither are unrestricted free agents.
Given the Raiders are only $8.5 million under the salary cap right now, mid-level players such as Maiava are the kind of players general manager Reggie McKenzie figures to target, for the most part, in free agency.
In other news, the Raiders opted against tendering a one-year contract to cornerback Phillip Adams. He was Oakland’s lone restricted free agent.

    Chargers released NT Antonio Garay.
Garay was due $5 million in 2013, and this move was a formality. The Chargers are interested in bringing back free agent Aubrayo Franklin to man the nose. Garay, 33, recorded just 16 tackles in eight games played last season.

With the rookie cap, the money wont be the issue with QB. It’s the fact that none of them are worth taking in the first round.

  46. DMAC Says:

Free agent LB Stewart Bradley will visit the Broncos.
Bradley was a colossal bust in Arizona, and was just released by the team earlier this month. Denver has a hole at middle linebacker, and they might offer him a chance to compete with Nate Irving for the job.

Not really. If Seattle figured it would take their 1st and a 3rd to move up high enough to get the top receiver in this year’s draft, this was a good move, especially if they’ve determined that Harvin is heads and shoulders above that player. I’ve been all for keeping Palmer all along because I knew how we could get to $30 mil under the cap (cut McClain and TK, restructure DHB, Huff and Palmer) and make some real moves.

But if we’re just going to throw in the towel like this and not be serious about getting better in any way at all then I guess there would be not much point in paying for a quality QB like CP3.

Looks like after being within a play or two of the playoffs under Hue a season ago, we went to a zero-identity 4-12 embarrassment and will now collapse into a fullon expansion team. Great.-

    ++++++++++

I feel your pain. I also feel bad for guys like Palmer and McFadden, stuck on retard Island with no hope for the future.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Lol! Poor baby Palmer. He quit on a playoff team and was handed JC’s job. Thought he was just gonna pick right up where JC left off. Not so easy, was it? Now he going down in flames igninted by his own mind-numbing, backbreaking turnovers, and I’m supposed to feel sorry for him? GTFOH!

If we could steal Elvis Dumervil from the Bronco’s and get Nnamdi back then we would have 2 legit play makers on defense.

Draft a solid LB and resign Bryant this Defense might have a chance…

Dumerville agreed to restructure to saty in Denver and Nnamdi spent 2 years proving that his only real value as a CB is in a man to man system like Al Davis used to insist upon, otherwise he isn’t much better than Phillip Adams.

I like that we resigned Adams, but why just a 1-year deal? This could wind up another Wheeler situation where the guy plays well and we’re SOL because he hadn’t been signed to a longer deal.

Al had a way of working the cap and getting big signings and trades but I think Reggie wants to build the core of the team first and layer it year by year, but first he needs to release the decay all around.

Great.-

    ++++++++++

I feel your pain. I also feel bad for guys like Palmer and McFadden, stuck on retard Island with no hope for the future.

The Cardinals are in need of an inside linebacker to pair with Daryl Washington. Stewart Bradley was released and Paris Lenon is a free agent. We’d expect the Ravens to give Maualuga a ring, too, after losing Dannell Ellerbe to the Dolphins.

Big deal. So has Jamarcus Russell. Most NFL GMs agree with me. Only Al Davis was ignorant enough to throw that kind of money at a punter and thats why we cant afford any of these FA signings now. We are still paying off all the checks that big Al couldn’t cover when he signed them.

    Al the Al Davis Apologist

Instead we could have a post like this back in the good old days:

Colts signed OLB Erik Walden to a four-year, $16 million contract.
27-year-old Walden is an outside pass rusher who managed nine sacks in Green Bay over the past three seasons. It’s nothing short of stunning that the Colts are paying him $4 million a year, but Walden was told the club gave him “every expectation” he’ll be the 2013 starter opposite Robert Mathis. The Packers didn’t think much of Walden and tend to be awfully savvy player evaluators. This looks like one of the bigger overpays of the free-agency period so far.

Kind of reminds me of Javon Walker, or Gibril Wilson or Larry Browne or on and on it goes…..

    Finally some sanity.

There is not one free agent on the Raiders that was worth the contract they had with the exception of Wheeler.
    NOT ONE.
Who knows what he was asking so he can look as well.

Lechler is a solid performer who will NEVER get another ridiculous contract that he got in Oakland.
    Let him look.

Guys; we were a 4-12 team that was 5 million OVER THE CAP AT THE END OF THE SEASON!!!

That is ridiculous. We should have been $30 million under given what the way the players played.

Bryant, Barnes, Shaugnessy, Carter, etc etc etc. can look all they want. They are back ups at best!!!!! It will still take a year to get our cap situation in line with on field pefromance but this is exactly what we need to do.

  385. KoolKell Says:

Front Office Power Rankings: The NFL’s best decision-makers

    1. Baltimore

This isn’t just a case of to the winners go the spoils. Only the newly minted Super Bowl champion Ravens have gone to the playoffs in each of the past five seasons, and Baltimore has even won at least one postseason game every year during that span. Simply put, the front office that Ozzie Newsome has led since the franchise relocated from Baltimore in 1996 has been a blueprint for success over most of that span. The Ravens won with defense in 2000 and for many years after that, and now they’re winning with offense, with Super Bowl MVP quarterback Joe Flacco taking on the reins of leadership as Ray Lewis exits stage left. That’s the kind of versatility and adaptability every franchise covets for it roster.

As we just learned again Monday, the Ravens don’t get overly sentimental about their weighty personnel decisions. They traded playoff-run star Anquan Boldin when he wouldn’t play ball with them on the salary cap, and they might watch starters like Ed Reed, Dannell Ellerbe, Paul Kruger and Bryant McKinnie follow him out the door. But Baltimore has lost quality players before and prospered (guard Ben Grubbs and outside linebacker Jarret Johnson in free agency just last year) and they won’t sentence themselves to salary cap hell in order to avoid it. They had to get Flacco re-signed without franchising him this offseason, and they did. Everything after that fell under the heading of optional move. With another Lombardi in the trophy case, Newsome can afford to be more patient than ever. His legacy secure, his eventual replacement already on hand in the highly regarded Eric DeCosta, the team’s assistant GM, Newsome can focus on keeping the NFL’s best personnel department on task and running smoothly.

Adams did not take a paycut. We did not use our tender on him.

    As for predictions:
Our biggest FA signing will be a RT but I am not sure who just yet. We will also sign a decent corner, another corner and a MLB besides Gaither. Our biggest move will be to trade down and accumumlate picks as teams get in bidding war over Millner. A lot of this is based on hope because it presupposes a good value at RT and bidding war for Millner at #3 as opposed to #2 or #1.

Unfortunately I think Bryant, Wheeler and Meyers all move on and we bring in some 2nd teir FAs to fill in but it will not be equal.

Yes the value of a FA goes down as you go deeper into FA. If you want to keep him you hang on until there is a roster bonus due like we did with Wimbly. That gives the team more leverage. Smh…

  521. boss01 Says:

No way Huff and DHB get cut and McClain and Kelly should get to stay. Say what you want about DHB and Huff being busts but at least effort and work ethic was not their problem.

  522. Just Win Baby Says:

I hope they sign Atari Bigby at safety. We cut Huff and DHB but still have McClain? Oh boy….

  523. realtruraider Says:

Damn, surprised Huff got cut and not happy about DHB unless he refused to take paycut, Huff has a ton of deadmoney I believe. Strange no McClain, Kelly

    Raiders release Huff and DHB

  527. rediaR Says:

    23 million under now. Hmmmm

  528. elraidmanhattan Says:

Reggie going according to plan, huff was a liability never lived up to his rep out of texas, DHB not only inconsistent but overpriced and that DUI didn’t help. Reggie wa ts his own guys period the end, this is not the end.

  529. Seymour Bush Says:

Huff and DHB gone. I guess that doesn’t mean Pryor is the starter.

  530. elraidmanhattan Says:

Palmer stays at restructure for sure, also sure if we cut him he would have retired

  531. Just Fire Baby Says:

I always thought the best bet was to try to trade Carson over the weeknd of the draft.

Guess I will have to grasp to that hope moving forward.

  532. RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit Says:

LoL at ROSS at saftey.. maybe in the PRESEASON

the saftey is coming from the draft or FA.. Raiders have mad CAP SPACE NOW

but wow at huff. No more him getting burnt on SUNDAYS or whiffing on tackles at the saftey spot

  533. inonewordraider Says:

so palmer and kelly reworking deals? reggie admitting he made a mistake on tolleson. how does the dhb is a #1 camp feel?

  534. Just Win Baby Says:

    …..but we aren’t rebuilding.

DHB should have been a restructure not a cut!

  538. RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit Says:

DHB is gonna be the Mike Wallace replacement or go to the RAVENS

Steelers or Ravens in play for DHB

Adrian Wilson in play for Raiders..so is mike mitchell

  539. elraidmanhattan Says:

Palmer stays only as bridge, this definitely will be his last year here.

  540. Marks hair Says:

512.. I just want to pick a direction and go in it. Are we completely stripping down the pay of this roster and starting over? or we going to carry guys like Palmer.. why? If we’re gonna play for the playoffs let’s spend some money AD style. If not lets gut this stinkfish.. 1 way or the other… not meandering around somewhere in the middle.

  541. morilla Says:

    Ouch

  542. RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit Says:

Anything is possible at this point with who REGGIE CUTS…

  543. elraidmanhattan Says:

DHB might have just said no to restructure

  544. chargerschoke Says:

Big Reg about to load up with more young money hungry beasts who love football and hitting! He will get some compensatory picks and maybe a lower 1 and a 2nd round pick for our 3. If Kelly doesn’t take a cut he may be gone, DHB is overpaid based on his production compared to Streater. Jacoby is a steal and should shine next season, we could have 9 or 10 picks in the draft with 2 big speedy lockdown corners and a stud DL and beast LB.

    =============
He doesn’t have to agree to restructure. Maybe they had no choice but to cut him.

  546. chargerschoke Says:

    Dhb cut hmmm.

    Reggie whacking all of Al’s #1 picks…

    Slo McWhiff is next……

  548. Marks hair Says:

Way better safties than huff in this draft

  549. Macho Man Randy Savage Says:

Tommy Kelly and Slowlando should be cut regardless of their cap number. Only way to clean the toilet is by flushing the turds out first! you can quote me on that.

  550. elraidmanhattan Says:

I said it many times reggie saw the roster gave it the old college try this year and got seriously disgusted as he should have, and said thats it complete roster makeover branch is on board palmer ( guarantee restructure) on board….character players boys that is the future raiders

  551. oakfshow Says:

Reggie is a watermelon head fk stick.

  552. elraidmanhattan Says:

Do you guys finally get to see the picture it is apparently clear, younger hungrier team oriented players

  553. NGRaiderfan Says:

Just saw on nfl.com that tollefson, huff, and dhb got released

  554. oakfshow Says:

DHB on to New England.Real coaches not Reggies wantedededededededededededed guys.

  555. riderm Says:

Anyway in hell MM34 earns Huff’s starting position??

  556. oakfshow Says:

    #1 overall pick in2014

  557. RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit Says:

DHB was tough as nails man.. the season b4 knapp he had almost 1,000 yards and should have except for all the holding penalties the OLINE commited..

and didnt DA or Reggie said HUFF was going back to saftey?

  558. elraidmanhattan Says:

Expect only hardworking lower priced no ego players going forward this is going the way to go trust me it is going to work.

  559. boss01 Says:

Now that Huff is gone, I hope Dee Miliner is not in play and I hope his replacement is not MM34.

  560. 00tt00 Says:

I actually liked DHB….thought he was catching better and really like how he runs after the catch….that being said we knew he was over paid…..

I have a feeling reggie is approaching guys to restructure or cut and they are jumping at the opportunity to get cut

  561. elraidmanhattan Says:

Huff sucked, did any of you guys watch the games this year. Overpriced!

  562. RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit Says:

You guys Reggie might not have even given DHB the OPTION for RESTRUCTURE or PAY CUT..

Remember these are not his guys

agreed……we will fill those 20 something positions with our 6 draft picks and 14 undrafted kids…….2-14

  565. riderm Says:

    $hit, Wheeler is gone?!?!

  566. elraidmanhattan Says:

Man this is tough, but the reality is we need to do this years and years of creating a facade. It is over expect this year as growing pains.
Seriously don’t you want to see this turned around, we needed this years ago.

huff was overpriced but a guy who can play multiple positions in the defensive backfield has alot of value

5 year deal for Wheeler with Miami. He’ll be there until he’s 34. Gut says Oakland didn’t really have a chance.

  571. RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit Says:

NOW you guys know why I have been saying the RAIDERS NEED DRAFT PICKS

  572. elraidmanhattan Says:

Exactly younger we will get. Listen Wheeler was gone a week ago when he said it could go either way, he is still a liability in coverage, and he should thank Reggie for the opportunity.
Hey, for years I believed the bull that we were close but damn watching now we always manhandled byteams i as always exasperated. Enough is enough if you idiots think that reggie wants to destroy this team you are seriously losers.

maybe you people dont understand what reggie meant when he said he ‘believes in building through the draft”

He means he is not going to spend a lot of money on other peoples reject free agents.

he also isnt going to try and make a splashy signing for headlines

I am fine with it. Get young players in the draft and let other teams overspend

I also like the idea of cutting players like kelly and palmer aging under achievers that are way over paid for their production.

Funny though i notice that many people ripping reggie today are also the same guys that ripped davis for spending like no tomorrow

this place is flat out weird at times

I understand what he meant but be honest do you see a legitimate player worth the #3 pick? I don’t think so! What this Buffon should be doing is trading out of this 3rd pick and also going after key positions like DT, DE, CB, OG through free agency since none of these positions are worth taking at #3! Hopefully he would pick up additional picks by doing so. Now that’s how he would build team through draft just like them fortyphagets.

  574. elraidmanhattan Says:

Dolphins are going to regret the signings seriously ellerbe at 7 million are you kidding wallace at 13 like drunken pirates good world Ireland

  575. elraidmanhattan Says:

Draft draft draft, and smart cheap free agents. Sure let’s pay jennings 10 million a year at 30 brilliant would you be happy with that

  576. elraidmanhattan Says:

  578. JB Says:

How sad that the words “Raiders” and “contender” will not be used in the same sentence anytime soon. Reggie better start getting his schit together lest we be a major contender for the 2014 Clowney Bowl.

It will be hard to replace him. You can’t just sign anyone to look all around and point at the other guys and have that confused look on his face after getting roasted for a TD. We ar screwed.

This team is being cut down to nothing so it can be sold. Mark Davis wants nothing to do with it.

    ==========

Yeah, especially since the LA Stadium deal is essentially non-existant. . in an economy like this, wtf is buying a football team?

They’ll be fine, their just blowing up the team to draft all over again – and get cap space to sign all over again.

Wouldnt we have won the division at least once in the last 3 years with the players we lost?

    thats what i thought.

  584. John David Booty Says:

Nick Roach would be real nice. The type of player I expected Reggie would be good at finding, considering all the hype about his “eye for talent”. Roach is the reason CHI is ready to move on from Urlacher. He’s been under the radar, and thats how CHI wanted to keep it, but I think hes going to make a little change somewhere. Hopefully its here.
