Raiders meeting with two veteran free agents

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, March 13th, 2013 at 12:06 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders reportedly are interested enough in linebacker Nick Roach and defensive tackle Pat Sims to schedule meetings with both players at some point this week, according to reports.
Sims, 27, started 23 games during his five seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, but only one of those starts came the past two seasons. He recorded 17 tackles in eight games last season.
The Raiders are down two defensive tackles from last season’s roster as of right now — Richard Seymour is a free agent, Desmond Bryant signed with the Cleveland Browns.
Roach, 27, started 59 games during his six seasons with the Chicago Bears. More than half those starts came the past two seasons.
Roach also is on the radar of several other teams. The Raiders are seeking an infusion of talent for a linebacking corps that just lost Phillip Wheeler and soon is expected to lose Rolando McClain.
In other news, the Raiders re-signed cornerback Coye Francies, who was with the Raiders last season and played mostly special teams.

What we’re learning about McKenzie is that he walks softly and speaks carefully and moves deliberately — but decisively. His mini-purge on Tuesday is another example.
The signs are clear, the message loud. McKenzie used his broom, and he is not finished. The remaking of the Raiders, which became very necessary with the coaching change before last season, is officially under way.

But Joe Webb is, he meets the “criteria” apparently.

So you wouldn’t like the Raiders dumping Palmer, and letting TP and Tebow battle it out in a “space-aged” offense?

you been having conversations with sportrac? How did $16 mill turn into $21 mill?
    ********
Because the (15.5 mill) was including us taking Mike Huffs dead money this year at 9 mill. NFL.com transactions page confirms Huff was a June 1st designation, therefor the dead money for him this year is 3.15 mill and 6.3 mill in 2014. So its actually closer to 2 million.

And I haven’t been ‘talking’ with the guy from spotrac, but I tweeted him asking what the split was for Huff and he responded right away.

Report: Raiders having “preliminary” talks with Vince Young

Posted by Michael David Smith on March 13, 2013, 1:16 PM EDT

    Getty Images
Former Titans, Eagles and Bills quarterback Vince Young is eager to talk to any NFL team that will hear him out in an effort to explain why he deserves another chance in the NFL. He may have found one team that’s at least willing to listen.

Young is in talks with the Raiders about visiting them for a workout, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Rapoport cautioned that those talks are “preliminary,” so we’re probably not going to be seeing Young in the Silver and Black any time soon.

Still, even “preliminary” interest is more than Young has been generating elsewhere since the Bills cut him during the 2012 preseason. Young has said repeatedly that he wants another shot in the league (in large part because he needs the money), and the Raiders appear to be the closest thing he has found to a taker.

Oakland currently has two quarterbacks on the roster, Carson Palmer and Terrelle Pryor, and it’s unclear what the Raiders’ plans are at the position. It won’t be easy for Young to convince an NFL team to give him a shot, but Young in Oakland might just be crazy enough to work.

We just don’t have enough guys in place right now to answer that. IMO it doesn’t matter if we run a 4-3 or 3-4 so long as we decide on a scheme and the players we bring in fit it. It is a myth to me that 1 is superior to the other.

Brisiel was the #1 ranked FA ZBS guard when we signed him. He played hurt all year, it’s easy to say in hindsight, but Brisiel was still a good signing.

Of course you would rather Reggie be more like Al… who paid Deangelo Hall 8 million to give up 10+ tds in half a season. Certainly a better way to go…

    ====

Signing guys that (at the time) you think are the right players to build your core around is rebuilding. You have to start somewhere. Branch was who he thought was the most talented of the young guys on defense. Briesel was a fairly young, proven ZBS anchor on a team that was converting to that system. Another rebuilding type move.

Not playing Pryor has nothing to do with rebuilding or not. The guy showed too much inability to digest the playbook or run the offense through most of the season. Not playing guys that aren’t ready has nothing to do with whether or not a team is rebuilding. He didn’t give Bergstrom Carlisle’s spot either because — wait for it — he wasn’t showing that he was ready for it yet.

Cowboys were horrible after aikman retired.. rams used to be the laughing stock of LA.. SF was a train wreck until recently. Hell the hallowed and mighty pats were nothing until recent history really. Every team has down times, ours has just lasted a while because the hard work wasn’t done to fix the issues. People keep saying it was only Luck that changed. But in reality they changed 4 out 5 starters on that OL and came up with a very good one. But to give credit to Luck where due, he is the best young Manning-like cerebral QB in the game and he makes as much if not more difference with his reads than with his arm. Smith is not that level of prospect. He’s more the type of young QB that will take several seasons to develop, like a Flacco or a Rodgers type.

  242. Thec Says:

Not playing Pryor has nothing to do with rebuilding or not. The guy showed too much inability to digest the playbook or run the offense through most of the season.

Show me a link from someone in the media, or the org that says he did not know the playbook.

Where did you get this notion from?

  243. DMAC Says:

Waiting for and then hiring a new coach may overlap with another task facing McKenzie: He must scout and evaluate all the Raiders and decide who gets invited back next season.

“There will be no quick decisions at all, because the last thing I would want is to let go of someone and he turns out to be a Pro Bowl-type player,” McKenzie said.

“Mistakes will happen. They happen because of haste, and I don’t want to act in haste. So we’ll evaluate all our personnel and when the time comes, when it’s time to make a move, if we have to, we will.”

I was on a Jacksonville board and asked them a question on their rebuilding plan. Does this sound familiar?

    From JAX Board:

“….The plan is to fully rebuild. They are ridding themselves of undesirable contracts for mediocre players. They are taking their lumps now and committing to the future. They’ll sign some lower tiered FA’s later on to fill holes and build through the draft. This approach is necessary, as the team in its current state is absolutely awful…..”

    >>>>

Same thing you saw with Clev, Det, KC, Bills fans for years.

All the perennial loser teams think they have to blow up everything and start over.

Funny it has yet to work anytime in the NFL!

You don’t win by losing in the NFL. Losing begets losers.

Unfortunately, others don’t see it that way.

Don’t you know, blowing up everything, rebuilding for 5 years guarantees victory!

Playing TP has everything to do with rebuilding. it all starts at quarterback and if TP is not the future we really need to look at other quarterbacks. playing cp was a lame fùck around a waste of time… brisel/zbs/krapp was a team killing move. And changing systems every yr is b.s. Reggie gets it now we’re rebuilding. I’m glad everybody gets it now.

if Reggie knew we were rebuilding we wouldn’t have gave Briesel or branch fat deals and we would have played TP down the stretch. quit making excuses they sound silly

    ====

You cant keep drafting like garbage and throwing huge money at washed up vets and expect to win in the long term.

And the niners don’t have a ring yet.

So its ONE team that hit rock bottom and then hit paydirt quickly in a few years? How many SB’s have there been?

Most other teams work their way up to a championship slowly and surely by finding and KEEPING their HC… Toiling around 8-8 for awhile, settling on a franchise QB, and plugging pieces in.

This was probably one of the reasons Reggie contemplated DA’s fate this offseason.

I just believe that once the writing was on the wall regarding the 2012 season, Reggie should have called DA into his office and said, you know, this is a lost cause, so lets see what we have in the young QB. If he tanks, we know what we need to do, and you will not be blamed for it at the end of the season.

The season was over the second we hired Knapp….but it was obviously over after week 2, so one would think by week 11-12, it would have dawned on them that it was time to get a look at the young fella.

  276. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

I cut Regina a little slack bcz he’s been operating under less than ideal circumstances.

We all realize there’s legitimacy to his whines about lack of cap space and draft picks.

His signing of Wheels was a good one. I think there might have been some decent draft picks. I like Burris even though many of the semi’s here don’t. Streeter could turn out to be a good UDFA acquisition. Bilukidi might turn out to be a find as well.

But Regina’s efforts to revamp the O-line have been pretty sorry.

Briesel, unless he comes back and plays well, was a horrible move. Bergstrom, his first draft pick, couldn’t crack the lineup even to replace an injured Barnes or Briesel – this is not a good sign. Then there was Willie Smith. Ouch.

Looks like 0 for 3 in his attempts on that front.

Similarly, his attempts to rework the CB situation by signing Spencer and Bartell were exercises in futility.

0 for 2 on that front.

Of course his biggest whiff of all, and the one that will be hardest to recover from, will turn out to be hiring Tits.

Yeah, Regina deserves some latitude, but he shouldn’t be given a pass for all of his fvckups.

As far as I can tell, The Broncos going after Welker was a direct response to the splashes we have made by getting Adams and Francies inked. They saw us making the types of moves that spell trouble for the rest of the division, and now theyre nervous.

manning went to dever because of john elway. John elway knew how to win a super bowl late in his career as a qb and peyton knew that elway would look out for him and make it possible. to go along with that, denver minus tebow looked a lot like indianapolis colts. two scary pass rushers like freeney and mathis(dumervil and von miller). a young dynamic wr corps waiting to have a real qb (demariyus thomas & Eric Decker). they brought in stokely and tamme from indy. And John is a good salesman, and Peyton didn’t want to play in the nfc because of his brother. not because they went from 4-12 to 8-8.. if that were the case he would have just went to the niners who went from 5-11 to 13-3 and a game within the super bowl.

In today’s piece about free agents on the Cleveland Browns, we look at the team’s lone free agent linebacker, Kaluka Maiava.
    LB Kaluka Maiava

Linebacker Kaluka Maiava stares at a football. Credit: David Richard-USA TODAY Sports How and When He Joined the Browns: Maiava was a fourth-round pick by the Browns in 2009 and played under Rob Ryan in the 3-4 defense. His four-year rookie contract is now set to expire.

Productivity Level Last Season: Statistically, Maiava posted career highs across almost the entire board. He started 13 games (it was basically 16, but sometimes Cleveland heavily ran the nickel package), logging 53 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 passes defended, and 2 forced fumbles. It was not a standout season for Maiava, but you could also say that his production flew under-the-radar a little bit.

Why Keeping Him Could Make Sense: If you’re looking for versatility, Maiava has a little bit of that. He was drafted by the Browns to be a 3-4 inside linebacker. He has played two years in that role, and also has two years of experience as a 4-3 outside linebacker. If he were retained, Maiava would move back to the inside in 3-4 sets to play alongside D’Qwell Jackson.

What the Browns Should Do: Meh. That pretty much sums up how I have felt about Maiava during his four-year career with the Browns. If he gets brought back, he shouldn’t command too big of a contract, which I guess it a plus.

As it stands right now, the inside linebackers in the 3-4 look can be filled by D’Qwell Jackson, Chris Gocong, James-Michael Johnson, Craig Robertson, L.J. Fort, and Tank Carder. With all of those names in there, I don’t see how Maiava was enough of a standout to be re-signed. It seems to make more sense for the Browns to either find a more impact free agent (who can play behind DQ), or see if any undrafted free agents shine in training camp. Aloha, Maiava.
Now it’s your turn — vote in the poll below on whether or not the team should re-sign Kaluka Maiava!

    ——-key word “MEH” lol

I’ve been thru many dark times as a Raider fan…we all have, but i’ve never been in an offseason that was so utterly devoid of hope as this one….EVER.

One thing Al did every year was give us reason to hope…not to hope that in SEVEN F’ING YEARS we might get to .500…but hope that we would turn it around.

I know he didn’t deliver all the time but we had some great years…some good ones…and some bad ones…but this new regime has only given us 4-12 so far and what is being called one of the worst teams not only for 2013 but quite possibly OF ALL TIME.

    Thanks a lot.

“Just wait till the old man is gone” they said.

    Yeah right…..SEVEN F’ING YEARS?

    Screw all of that.

    *****

FYI it’s March 13. The season starts in September or maybe the end of August. Lets see where we’re at then. Anyone who suffered through Greg Knapp’s offense last year with the pretend OL coach and lousy free agent signing he brought with him should see Olson and Sparano as hope. The players will come, hopefully enough that we win a few games this year.

The future depends primarily on drafting well. If Reggie Mac can’t get it done in draft, the rest don’t matter. But we’ll know long before 7 years. Most teams have about 85% turnover in 5 years, and about 70% in 4 years. Okay, I haven’t checked those figures, they are estimates. But if we can have 3-4 great drafts in a row we’re sure to be in the playoffs. Haven’t seen that in over a decade. Hopefully Reggie is the man. He needs to prove it after a kinda sputtering start under difficult circumstances.

Not as down on Maiava replacing Wheeler as others are. I think Maiava has his first full productive season with us. Not saying he will be an All-Pro, but I actually think he will have no problem matching, or even surpassing Wheelers production.
