Raiders meeting with two veteran free agents

By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, March 13th, 2013 at 12:06 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders reportedly are interested enough in linebacker Nick Roach and defensive tackle Pat Sims to schedule meetings with both players at some point this week, according to reports.
Sims, 27, started 23 games during his five seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, but only one of those starts came the past two seasons. He recorded 17 tackles in eight games last season.
The Raiders are down two defensive tackles from last season’s roster as of right now — Richard Seymour is a free agent, Desmond Bryant signed with the Cleveland Browns.
Roach, 27, started 59 games during his six seasons with the Chicago Bears. More than half those starts came the past two seasons.
Roach also is on the radar of several other teams. The Raiders are seeking an infusion of talent for a linebacking corps that just lost Phillip Wheeler and soon is expected to lose Rolando McClain.
In other news, the Raiders re-signed cornerback Coye Francies, who was with the Raiders last season and played mostly special teams.

Nice move by the Raiders. Kaluka Maiava turned 2-down role with Browns into our 7th highest grade for 4-3 OLBs last year. Shrewd.

And Wheeler’s production has been replaced at 1/3 the price.
    ———

Wheeler had 109 tackles last year, Maiava had 53

    ———

maiava was a 2 down 4-3 OLB … know your football before you talk

  • Chris in NY

Denver is absolutely going to beat us silly. Could set records. Like the football version of a Harlem Globetrotters-Washington Generals game.

  • LA to TheBay

Judge, Wheeler never came off the field last year but Maiva did in sub packages I believe.

Plus he had equal/similar number of sacks and FFs, so I guess you could say he was more productive… per capita.

Somebody not at work should go back and look at the CLE tape and see if this dude stands out at all.

  • Just Fire Baby

If only Al was around, he could release a press report to the media, touting Maiava’s prowess as a Little Leaguer, his off the chart ST abilities, and his amazing high school javelin throw abilities.

  • inonewordraider

    dt signed
    maiava olb, 3-4 ilb signed
    francies and adams signed
    vy in for a tryout

does this mean we’re going 3-4 meaning star gonna be drafted? Milliner possibly? jones or jordan to rush the qb?

wheeler never came off the field bc we didn’t have anyone decent to put on the field instead of him, not necessarily because he was good. he was horrible in pass coverage.

i can’t speak on the cleveland LB

So we replace a productive 3 down player with a productive 2 down player.

Raiders signed DT Pat Sims, formerly of the Bengals.Although Sims is one dimensional, he is an efficient run stopper and can fill a needed role on an Oakland defense that annually struggles to stop ground attacks. Sims turned 27 last November. He packs 335 pounds on a 6-foot-2 frame. Mar 13 – 5:48 PM

I’ve been thru many dark times as a Raider fan…we all have, but i’ve never been in an offseason that was so utterly devoid of hope as this one….EVER.

One thing Al did every year was give us reason to hope…not to hope that in SEVEN F’ING YEARS we might get to .500…but hope that we would turn it around.

I know he didn’t deliver all the time but we had some great years…some good ones…and some bad ones…but this new regime has only given us 4-12 so far and what is being called one of the worst teams not only for 2013 but quite possibly OF ALL TIME.

    Thanks a lot.

“Just wait till the old man is gone” they said.

    Yeah right…..SEVEN F’ING YEARS?

    Screw all of that.

    *****

FYI it’s March 13. The season starts in September or maybe the end of August. Lets see where we’re at then. Anyone who suffered through Greg Knapp’s offense last year with the pretend OL coach and lousy free agent signing he brought with him should see Olson and Sparano as hope. The players will come, hopefully enough that we win a few games this year.

The future depends primarily on drafting well. If Reggie Mac can’t get it done in draft, the rest don’t matter. But we’ll know long before 7 years. Most teams have about 85% turnover in 5 years, and about 70% in 4 years. Okay, I haven’t checked those figures, they are estimates. But if we can have 3-4 great drafts in a row we’re sure to be in the playoffs. Haven’t seen that in over a decade. Hopefully Reggie is the man. He needs to prove it after a kinda sputtering start under difficult circumstances.

I was addressing Bryant specifically. Wheeler was almost certainly overpaid and I don’t think he is anything near replaceable. Bryant was a diamond in the rough that we found and imo is worth the contract he got.
