Raiders sign three veterans in free agency

Kaluka Maiava

Kaluka Maiava

The Raiders signed defensive tackle Pat Sims, linebacker Kaluka Maiava and defensive end Jason Hunter on Wednesday in what amounts to the addition of solid players, even if they arent household names.

“We’re excited to add three veterans through free agency,” Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said via press release, “helping to create depth and competition on defense. We’ll continue to add free agents as the opportunity surfaces.”

Sims, 27, played for the Cincinnati Bengals the past five seasons, with 23 starts — only one the past two seasons. He recorded 17 tackles in eight games last season.

Sims, 6-foot-2 and 335 pounds, is projected to team with Tommy Kelly in the middle for now, with Richard Seymour a free agent and key backup Desmond Bryant now a member of the Cleveland Browns.

Maiava, 26, started 22 games for the Browns during his four-year career in Cleveland. The Raiders are thin at linebacker, with the defection of Philip Wheeler to the Miami Dolphins and the expected release of Rolando McClain. Omar Gaither is a free agent, also.

Hunter, 29, last played in the NFL in 2011, when he was with the Denver Broncos. He started two games that season. Overall, Hunter has six years’ NFL experience, including three with the Green Bay Packers.

The Raiders are in need of some help at end, with Matt Shaughnessy a free agent, Bryant gone and Dave Tollefson released.

The signings of Sims, Hunter and Maiava represent Oakland’s first foray into free agency since the process kicked off Tuesday. Before now, their only moves consisted of re-signing cornerbacks Coye Francies and Phillip Adams to one-year contracts.

I get people sying we have to “build through the dratf”. To an etent I’m on board with that, but you need to blend that with retaining your own young, good players and getting some quality free agent pieces.
    ===================

    You missed the boat

what “young good players” have we lost that cant be replaced?

last i checked we did not have a probowler or star player, braynt wheeler, meyers?

the term you use “quaility free agent” is relative to what it is you are trying to do.

If you are a team missing one or two players, and you are coming off a deep playoff run, sure spend big to get the guy that makes it work.

however after a 4-12 season you dont break the bank for one or two big name guys that may or may ot work out.

Cautionary examples namdi to the eagles and the dream team

mcnabb and hayneworth to the skins

    mario williams to the bills

no reggie is right. Patch the tires in free agancey and put most of the weight on the draft where you can not only find star talent but also baggage free youth.

Another thing about free agenst, you have to make room for thier persona, rookies are trying to fit in (unless its romac).

This creates a far better atmosphere, then bringing in a guy like bernrad pollard for example.

if anybody should know this raider fans should

sapp, j walker, i could go on forever

    not nearly enough

Jc also would throw to DHB in the clutch palmer never has

remember the opener in denver jc witha stick throw to DHb for the first down that iced the game

How about the late td in texas in the davis funeral bowl.

No plamer never got on the same page with dhb and i dont think dhb cared much for plamer either.

the team has not been the same since the collar bone curse and it is undeniable.

hopfully when palmer is benched/cut/traded the curse will be lifted and we can be the raiders again.

The impostor qb simply doesnt fit here

I’m not a fan or a hater. He was OK last year. There’s no guarantee he gets signed, or even if he does that he makes the 53 man.

    10 and then…..

  • guest123

If the plan is to clown for clowney, bring in Newman and pay him Reggie’s standard $630k/one year deal.

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

if you notice a lot of the free agent signings are for big money but they are players that are not stars.

    GUYS ARE BEING WAY OVERPAID

because the players in free agency hold all of the cards when a team is desperate to fill a hole or feels they are just a few players away.

Al davis was notorious for blowing the doors off with hs check book, yet players showed up and failed routinely.

At least davis staked his claim to guys that had previous star power and success, but des brayant and wheeler?!?!?!

    kruger?!?!?!

    come on

Im glad big mack is playing it the way he is

  • The Big Banana

1308 – clutch or not, one thing that can’t be denied is Palmer completed more passes for more yards to DHB than Soup in Hue’s offense.

What I will give you is that Palmer isn’t the leader you’d expect from that type of salary and is prone to picks in the clutch.

Yeah, they don’t get to watch too many Raider games on the East Coast.

Seriously though, maybe getting out of Oakland will be good for the young man. He can stop trying so hard to live up to his draft status and relax and play football.

I just think wide receiver is a “cherry on top” pick in the early first round. You need to already have other pieces in place for a WR to really help.

Wasn’t Megatron a part of 0-16? Has he won any playoff games?
    Larry Fitzgerald without Kurt Warner?

i think they respect his 4.2 speed and his explosive run after the catch skill.

  • Marks hair

does a great wide receiver guarantee you the playoffs? No. But once in the playoffs the team with the fewest mistakes will win. A great wr can ofter be the difference maker.

  • shutdown

It’s too bad, but football’s just like baseball, which I gave up on years ago. Got tired of watching guys come up through the minor league system, get to the show, develop, become good or great and take off for other teams. Football’s now the same way–rent a player.

You never get tied to the player anymore, or if you do, rooting for him to succeed, to get better and being happy when he does, he goes off to another team–true for bad teams like us, true for great teams like the Pats, the Niners, whatever.

You’re only rooting for uniform colors. That’s it. It’s hard to remain emotionally connected to nothing but colors. That’s what dumb gang members do… to their detriment.

No offense but DHB was hardly an AllPro prior to Knapp.

Coaching is not a big factor.

    Talent,durability,work ethic and knowledge are.
DHB is simply an average NFL player at this time. Not remotely worth the money he was due to make.
