Maiava’s brief chat with local media

By Steve Corkran
Thursday, March 14th, 2013 at 11:51 am in Oakland Raiders.

Here’s what recently signed linebacker Kaluka Maiava had to say during a brief conference call with the local media Thursday:

Q: Talk about how this all transpired, did Raiders show intersest as soon as free agency started, etc . . .
Maiava: Everything went (through) my agent. We had a few teams interested, the Raiders scheduled an interview really quick, they were the first ones to schedule one, so I took the trip. Coming into it, I always grew up a Raiders fan, and being from the islands, always watched the Raiders and San Fran games so they’re definitely a team I was familiar with and my ears definitely perked up when my agent told me about Oakland being interested. I came in with high hopes and fortunately we got a deal done and I’m very excited about it.

Q: What do you bring to the table for the Raiders? What are they getting?
Maiava: I’m a hard-nosed guy, man. I come to work every day and I lead by example. I’m not the rah-rah guy giving the speeches and stuff. I lead by example and I come to work every day and I’ll play hard. I’ll go to war with anybody and I’m sure my teammates will appreciate that. I’m a tough guy and I pride myself on being one of the tougher players, and I’m here to work. So hopefully everything works out in that aspect.

Q: You play 3-4, more comfortable in 4-3, any talks about your role?
Maiava: They haven’t really talked about scheme-wise and the details of what I’m going to be doing. I’m just we got the business part out of the way and now when we come back we can work on actual football. I’ll play anything. Whatever the coaches need me to do, whatever it takes to win, I’ll play whatever spot they need me at.

The older guy has to be a lot better to make up for the durability risk.

Relying on older vets is risky for a team with little or no depth. An injury even in camp leaves us hanging waiting for last cut castoffs.

The older guys almost always go with teams that have a real playoff shot and will often take less money to do it. Those teams have the depth to compensate for the heightened injury risk. The signing of older players by Mr. Davis was a catastrophic mistake since 2007.

Free agents are usually free for a reason. Either their salary demands are not consistent with their body of past work or there is a low evaluation of one of the variables on the left side of the above equation by the present employer.

A guy like Gannon was a good pick up because the Chiefs had a surplus that year at QB and made the wrong choice keeping Grbac. Gannon also had not played much so his durability was good even at a relatively advanced age. Those situations are rare!

    Silver and Black

I know what was being said and stats over an entire season need to be carfully interpreted when comparing team vs. team.

The Baltimore game is a classic example of how stats can be misleading.

The Ravens did not even have to play their best Dlineman because their back ups were playing very well against our starters.

The real stat that is impactful is that we are 9-51 against playoff teams over the last decade losing by an average score of 30-13.

We get pummelled especailly on the line of scrimmage.
It is obvious to any one really watching the game within the game-LINEPLAY!!!!

“Vic Tafur, the Raiders beat writer for the San Francisco Chronicle sat down with Madden today and the great one shared his opinion on Dennis Allen’s first year as the head coach of the Raiders. While Madden did not go into great detail, breaking down how Allen’s first season went, what he did say was very telling. Basically, Madden stated that Allen was coaching a team that simply did not have enough talent on it to do much better than the 4-12 record the first year head coach put up.

NOW, IT IS NO SURPRISE TO HEAR THAT THE RAIDERS LACKED TALENT THIS PAST SEASON, ANYONE WHO WATCHED THE GAMES COULD SEE IT. What is interesting about Madden’s comments is that he did not think there was much hope for the Raiders to have fared better than they did in 2012. That seems to go along with what a lot of people are saying, that Allen should get a pass on his first season because he had so little talent to work with.”

Same is true with the Forty Niners when Scot McCloughan took over he kept young talent and got rid of expensive unproductive talent some were expensive older players but he always kept teh young up and comers to BIULD AROUND.

The sam eis true when Jimmy Johnson took over the Cowboys he kept Micheal Irvin and teh young productive players and got rid bad apples. You MUST KNOW your roster and know WHO to cut and who to keep.

What Reggie is doing makes no sense at all. He’s bringing players worse than what he got rid of. Terrence Newman give me a freakin Break! The guy is a first class loser. The Cowboys couldn’t wait to cut his ass. Same with Pat Sims high priced never cut it.

    ====

Yeah, except that was in the pre-salary cap era and they had an owner that was more than happy to outspend every other team to win the championship. I don’t believe that any of their first 3 wins came in a year that they didn’t have the highest payroll in the league. Hell, this team paid Steve Young top 5 QB money just to sit on the bench and wait for Montana to get moved, so that they could prevent him going elsewhere.

Different times, where you didn’t have a cap that pressured the decisions of who to cut. You could do it all purely on talent decisions.

Not the recent rebuild, which I agree was far more successful under the cap. Now that Al is gone, Mark, Reggie, DA, and others have to pick up the pieces and rebuild. I am glad they have burned the roster to the ground. I am still hoping they burn the rest by getting rid of Kelly, Palmer, RoMac. I can’t remember the season already since largely cuz i want to forget it, but there was a game somewhere in there where tarver showed some 5-2 fronts on run downs and some off set box stuff, and I think oak will slowly become a 3-4 they way the personnel is.

139, Raider_D. I don’t like too many 1 yr. deals cuz if they do well they’re either gone the next yr. or wnat a big payday.

If Reggie believes in them enuff to bring em on in the first place then have enuff confidence in the decision to commit a little more to it..imo.

    ========================================

I wouldn’t disagree entirely. Given the cap situation though I don’t think we want to back load deals to get players to stay longer because that will just create more issues down the line. I do believe that some of these guys are being brought in for mutual benefit. Most players want to start and show what they can do so that they can get a better deal later on. The Raiders need players now that can fill the gaps as we draft and develop our own. Might not be the best solution but it is a solution that works for both sides for now. And hopefully with some of these 1 and 2 year deals if players stepped up we will have the cap room to resign them for the right price as hopefully the right culture will start to develop on the team.

probably recovering from torn bicep he suffered ast yr. probably wants more money than a lot of teams willing to give. maybe a lot of teams think he is declining. i don’t know. the longer he goes unsigned the better chance we have at getting him for a good price so i’m cool with it.

Reggie is finding “B” players on the cheap that can get us by until our cap situation is fixed. I told you all last season that our troubles with the cap were far from over and that more house cleaning would be in order.

By 2014 the contract messes will be in the past, our draft picks will be plenty, and then Reggie might make some splashy moves. And I say MIGHT.

Miami could have had Wheeler and now they are paying a bundle. We would have signed him initially to a better deal but last year we couldnt. And its no different this year. Not to mention, when you got “B” players basically playing in a contract year, youre going to get the best out of them.

So far so good for the Gut. Now he just has to draft starters across the board with the draft and we will probably be a better team than last year by simple addition by subtraction. No more DHB drops.

At this point, you wouldnt even seem me whine if we dumped Palmer. Sure its more dead money but its also a boat load of savings that we could spend on our defense. Palmer doesnt have the legs to survive behind our current offensive line. So before anyone knocks Pryors accuracy, Palmer’s accuracy means nothing if he’s always on his back. Until we clear all the “dead money” off the books, this team needs to be frugal to remain solvent. We may be under the cap but we are far from in the black.

Mark does not know how to operate Al’s alternative revenue streams like Al did. Heck, for all we know Mark has lost control of all of Al’s other holdings.

We’re finally making sound business/football decisions and all you morons can do it cry and moan. Typical. We were the worst franchise in sports the last 20+ years and somehow you morons glorify it like we just fell off a cliff the moment Al died. Al was always ahead of the curve, a cap master, and often put together talented teams, but he was far from a good owner/gm, the record shows that over the last 2 decades. He was meddlesome, fickle, and cared more about getting his way than “just winning baby”. Somewhere along the lines he forgot what was up. For all his football smarts, you know he was too chickensit to get down their and coach the damn team himself.

Al traded Gruden. Al brought in Kerry Collins to replace Gannon. Al gave us Jamarcus Russel. Kiffin, a guy most hate on this site, including dumba55 Corky, was the one guy begging to take Megatron but you fools stay loyal to the guy who gave us Purp Drank, DHB (Drops Half the Balls), and Rolando McDumbchit.

I have been watching the blog for the past few days and all you guys who are pissed we aren’t throwing money around for FA scrubs are crazy! Al mortgaged the future of this franchise the last few years of his life chasing one more Super Bowl before he died. It didn’t work. Now that Al is gone, Mark, Reggie, DA, and others have to pick up the pieces and rebuild. I am glad they have burned the roster to the ground. I am still hoping they burn the rest by getting rid of Kelly, Palmer, RoMac. I say take the cap hit this year as hard as possible, collect as many draft picks you can gather with our #3 pick by moving down as many times as possible and start building from the ground up again. If Reggie wants to bring in the “right type” of FA players…more power to him. I don’t buy the “no one wants to play in Oakland” line any more. Sell it as, “Sign a one year deal and you have the chance to get paid next year like Wheeler did”. Would a FA rather be a depth guy on a good to average team and not get paid as much, or have a great chance of showing what you can do on a bad team like ours and possibly get a better payday in a year?

    >>>>

Wow.. thats sprinkling fairy dust on a horrible situation.

    1. If Reggie wants to burn the franchise to the ground to save it, how come he didn’t just do it last year and restructure NOBODY? If he had traded every player with any value for whatever draft pick you can get, and we would would be in cap heaven right now! I wouldn’t have been happy about it, but I would have understood it. Now, not so much.

    2. What good does having unlimited cap space on a team that nobody wants to play on, and with a GM too scared to sign big contracts? Its like being the KC Royals of football!

I watched the Niners rebiuld from losing at least b9 games a year for 6 straight years. I saw how they did it and it was NOTHING like what we’re doing so sell your story some place else.

    ==================

niners built from the draft mostly. the majority of their talent were draft picks

    gore
    v. davis
    willis
    bowman
    goldson
    kaepernik
    alex smith
    aldon smith
    crabtree
    culliver
    terrell brown
    iupati
    staley
    anthony davis
    kyle williams
    kendall hunter
    lamichael james

    all niner draft picks

what have our draft picks done for us lately?

    >>>>

    ———-

Steve makes great points. And I’ll answer your questions about them Gdog, although I doubt you will listen…

    1. The reason Reggie didnt gut this team last year was, as he told people privately, he and the org thought this team had the talent to make a run so he took the gamble.

Had we gone deep into the playoffs, his hope was that he could have kept the core together and fixed our cap issues based on the fact that hometown discounts would have been easier to manage considering we were a team on the upswing.

The feeling that we were a contender was way off the mark. But lets not act like their wasnt merit to it. We all thought we had a good team after our last two 8-8 seasons. We all drank the “blame ChuckyB” koolaid and let the players off the hook and once again it bit us in the a55es.

    2. “Too scared to sign big contracts”… really? That is your expert opinion of why we havent GROSSLY OVERPAID during the first few days if free agency? Moron. These early FA signings never work out well for the teams making this marketing splashes. New coaches and flashy FAs sell season tickets. They never guarantee wins.

  224. Priesttj12 Says:

    Well put.

The outcry is a prime example of what a idiot bunch Al trained most in the “nation” to be. Dumba55es.

It’s a youth movement folks. Might as well roll with young guns across the board at this point.

    —————-
I disagree I think you’re speaking for everyone. Who’s questioning what Reggie is doing. Some B talent is fine as long as you don’t let go of up and coming talent that you need to biuld around. At some point you have to keep those whom you just drafted and allow them to develope. If you’re jus going to regurgitate talent over and over again you’ll never get anywhere. Reggie letting go of players that can play and are cheap because he didn’t draft them is crazy. You have to pay somebody why let go of players YOU NEED because it’s time to pay them?

It’s stupid you have to keep perspective on what the hell you’re doing. YOu want great young talent that’s good enough to get paid because that is name of this game. Even if you draft players YOU HAVE to pay them. Why let them go so you have to draft them again?

    It’s crazy!!

Who are you kidding, San Diego has been slowly bleeding off their talent for years.

    ———

Exactly. SD is a prime example of a SB contenter whose owners got cheap and let all its talent bleed away.

We are not, and were not even close to that. Priest, letting Bryant and other scrubs go is far from what SD did to their fan bases. Our drafted “talent” have had plenty of time to show they are developing and while guys like DHB & Huff always worked hard and did show improvement, the gains were marginal and at this rate they’d have to play a 25 year career before they’d ever reach Pro Bowl status.

We havent let go of ANYONE that we couldnt replace at a much cheaper rate. That is called sound GM work.

    >>>>

I guess you have to define “grossly over paid.”

The thing that pisses me off isn’t that we didn’t sign any top FA’s… its that we lost BOTH Wheeler, and Bryant. Anyway you twist it, they were two of our better defensive players. He couldn’t come up with the money to sign ONE of them?? What does that say to you?

Here’s what PFF said about the Bryant signing (in case you missed it)

    +0.5: Common sense shines through

Desmond Bryant (DT) to CLE: 5-year, $34m deal

If it weren’t for the money involved this would get a higher grade because Bryant is a guy who can really play. He was our sixth ranked defensive tackle last year with the sixth highest pass rushing productivity of all his peers. But he’s more than just a one dimensional pass rusher and held up against the run well too. It’s that all round ability and versatility (he spent most of 2011 at defensive end for the Raiders) which makes him an excellent fit for a Cleveland defense needing someone who can make an impact up front.

    ************
How do you KNOW that? How do you know he didn’t offer Bryant an extension but Bryant chose to bet on himself? The Raiders never comment on personal moves until they are filed. Has Bryant come out and said “Hey I would have stayed but they didn’t offer me anything”. Sorry that I cant get behind matching a $35 million contract for a career backup. You guys make a lot of assumptions of what goes on, when we all know that info isn’t leaking out.

    ********************
Because we started last year more than $20 million over the cap, and most of the big contracts you would want to cut had lower cap charges than dead money, which wasn’t the case this year. Cutting those guys last year would have incurred a cap charge, not a cap savings, and for the record… Reggie has only cut 3 people this year, so lets stop with this myth that he has ‘gutted the team’
    *****************************

    ==============================

I agree you want to keep your own talent but what do you do if other teams are overpaying for your talent? You can’t get into a bidding war to keep people here. The ideal situation would have been if these guys were extended before the last year of their contract but since the raiders dont comment on contract talks until theyre done and filed we have no idea what was attempted.

Talib didn’t have any issues in NE. It was all from his time with TB. That’s also why I said not to give him big guaranteed jack in the contract. DVD, cut too soon, IMO
Louis Murphy, good guy but was replaceable
Des Bryant, still a ??? there
Mike Bush, was mad that Al tendered him and didn’t want to come back!

    Seriously got to be kidding.

Those guys ALL flopped horrendously in the 2011 and/or 2012 preseasons.

They can’t play, and Barksdale even blew off OTA’s to boot.

  391. J Hill Says:

I know where you are coming from Priest, you value the players Al drafted more than anyone not named Al Davis. That is commendable. You try to see the best in just about every shmo on the roster.

    Love him for that.

I’m the say way in a lot of respects, per Dakota and others.

But I agree with your “Cmon, man”, lol.

I giving the “new way” a real chance. Because they are STILL the Raiders! And McKenzie was a Raider first and foremost, right????

If Reggie would have just let the Offense & ST’s stay along with keeping the coaches in place there, then he could put ALL his effort into fixing the defense and we would be MUCH better off than this constant anxiety his ego gave us.
    ************************************
Exactly! he has created more problems than he’s fixed by 5 x’s over. he’s not rebiulding he’s running in place or getting further behind. We were better tha KC and Denver before he got here now we’re WORSE!!

LOL, yeah because the Eagles have ben so much better than us the last few years. Its all about the money and in his case a chance to start, which he wasn’t gtting with Ravens

    ————————-

    truth hurts

    —————————————————–

The truth is its all about the MONEY, don’t get it twisted man. If Reggie would of out bid for any of these corners they would be Raiders.

Im not as down on Reggie as some in here, but to blame it on the “no one wants to play here excuse” is only a fkin excuse, as I have said before Im in a wait and see mode on Reggie and obviously he is doing this the “Packer Way”, so lets wait and see, but no need to make excuses for him not signing players because they “don’t want to play here” thats just BS

If Reggie would have listened to Hue’s rant he would have known the “lack of talent” he had.

LOL..ok, that made me laugh… My dog>DA…lol, but hey you are probably right!

Truth be told I wish we could find a receiver who could catch like him. If old Zeke could get his mouth around a football I’d let Reggie sign him for 1-year at %50 off.

LOL, we even said that the guy who throws frisbees during halftime to his dogs…those dogs had a better catch %age than our receivers!

exactly some are out just to get PAID.. just like WARREN SAPP was.. he didnt give one darn about the Raiders or AL he just lvoed his money even by his own admission.

Thats why he talked crap about the raiders after saying thats why any only ever came to the Raiders. Reggie doesnt want to many guys like that
