LB Nick Roach agrees to terms with Raiders

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, March 15th, 2013 at 7:10 am in Oakland Raiders.

Linebacker Nick Roach, who has started 29 games in the last two seasons for the Chicago Bears, has agreed to terms with the Raiders, according to multiple reports.

ESPN-Chicago reported that Bears’ general manager Phil Emery said his team attempted to sign Roach, but was up against the salary cap and Roach “wouldn’t make the necessary adjustments,’’ instead accepting the Raiders’ offer.

Roach joins free agent signee Kaluka Maiava and incumbent Miles Burris on a team that is expected to part with three-year player Rolando McClain.

An undrafted free agent out of Northwestern, Roach (6-foot-1, 234 pounds) was originally signed by the San Diego Chargers in 2007 but signed with the Bears upon his release.

He is a veteran of 59 starts for coach Lovie Smith’s primarily Cover 2 defense, playing both the strong side and in the middle.
Roach started the final four games of the season for Chciago in place of Brian Urlacher and was considered the logical choice to take that position this season, with Ulracher a free agent.

The Raiders could employ Roach on either the strong side or the middle, as there have have been discussions about moving Burris inside.

Meanwhile, running back Mike Goodson, according to multiple reports, has signed with the New York Jets.

Goodson missed four games due to injury last season and seemed to be more comfortable in the zone blocking system than starter Darren McFadden. The Raiders have since junked the ZBS in favor of more gap and power schemes that suit McFadden.

namdi didn’t make a lot of plays, even asa raider. his thing was, at least as a raider, he didn’t have a lot of plays made on him. teams for some reason shyed away from throwing to him. i liked him whe he was here. he played well for us. i dont really wana bad mouth the guy

NGRaider, huge Nnamdi fan here but Rod Woodson broke down #21 and Revis like this a few yrs ago. #21 would jam the WR at the line and mess up the timing. The QB gives up on that in first 2 secs and go to the other side, which is where we were weak at. Revis would dare you to throw and make a better play for the ball than the WR. That’s why the myth of #21 didnt work in a zone D.

Not going to pretend I’ve studied a lot of Nick Roach tape but by all accounts it seems like a good signing. Usually when the team tried pretty hard to resign the guy and their fans wanted him back as well it’s a good sign. So we’ll see.

I did find it interesting that Roach talked about playing MLB. I’ve been under the assumption we’re going to a 3-4. Maybe he’s just assuming or maybe he just means he’ll be starting inside. If we do stick with a 4-3 we’ve got to get busy bringing in some linemen considering Bryant and Seymour are gone and TK and Shaughnessy appear to be leaving.-

I have a theory that they waited until this season to discuss changing the tuck rule because if they did it last season, it would have been TOO obvious they waited for Al to die before changing it.

Don’t get me wrong. Many of the guys we have let go over the past two years were good hard working guys who tried hard.

They simply could not compete against good NFL competition and were NO WHERE NEAR EARNING THE MONEY THEY WERE BEING PAID.
In the cap era, VALUE is everything!

It is for that reason we must and will build through the draft. Any FA we bring in will be under 30.
Every FA will be signed to low/moderate dollars and we see how they perform. (Hunter and Sims both have injury issues and may not make it out of camp).
Unlike last year where we had no choice, we will not be left needing to find last cut scraps three days before our opener to filed a team.

We still have a ways to go but we are heading in the right direction.

I’d really like Reggie to go get us a stud RT now. There are still some really good ones on the market. I had it as my #2 item heading into free agency. #s 1 (Bryant), 3 (Delanie Walker) and 4 (Wheeler) are already gone.

For new coach Bruce Arians, his only chance of getting a franchise quarterback will come in the draft. Whether it’s Geno Smith or Matt Barkley or someone else, the Cardinals won’t be competing in a top-heavy NFC West until they get a quarterback who can stand toe to toe with the best passers (and, in that division, runners) in the sport.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/03/15/cardinals-lose-big-on-kolb/

Carson Palmer isn’t a “franchise QB” to the Cards either, huh?

We will draft the best available Olineman with our first pick and move incumbents necessary to accomodate that pick.
Veld may need to go to RT.

We will then drfat DT with our third rounder and CB after that.

LSH would be deadly on the Pats. I’d like it if we could get him on the cheap. Can’t be trotting Coye Francies out there again as our return man if Ford gets nicked. Plus LSH is a really nice RB. Too small to handle a full load, but a good player.

Seems like there are a lot of Players around the league who are resisting “restructuring”. Roach it seems was one of them.

  • Dakota

If you believe what you read on the Internet, here are a couple supposed facts I found on compensatory picks:

First as to this years picks-the NFL distributes 32 each year….if 32 picks are not justified, say 29 are, the remaining 3 picks are given to the teams in draft order at the end of the 7th round, so we would get a 7th rounder after KC and jax. But if 21 picks were dolled out, then only KC would get that extra pick.

Second-players that were receiving the vet minimum in salary the year before they were signed away are not qualified players for compensatory picks. I am pretty sure wheeler was paid the vet minimum last season, so we probably get nothing for him. I don’t know what Bryant made last year, but if he was getting the minimum as well, we might not get any comp picks for either of those guys despite their big contracts.

As for the draft, I think we absolutely need to get an edge rusher.

Forget Geno Smith — though I’m afraid that’s Reggie’s guy. Too much bust potential there.

Not many good edge rushers out there in free agency. Certainly not going to get one in a dumpster diving expedition. I’m not that high on Mingo, not a fan of Jarvis Jones at all, but I think Dion Jordan could be a superstar in a 3-4.

i’m a big believer that it will depend on where we are picking. there’s a good chance a team like the bills(if they remain QB’less) will want to move up for Geno. possibly the cards… if we move back, expect the best player available. the draft need goes out the window. WARMACK should be at the top of Reggie’s board if we’re picking at #8

the pats don’t need woodhead or stephens-howling. people forget that that put jeff demps on IR last year so they wouldnt lose him. Jeff Demps, the olympic sprinter. add to that that they already have their top rusher comig back. woodhead expendable they don’t need to pick up an RB. sucks to say it. i still dont think the pats got what it takes. they need to imporve their D tremendously. losing talib is gonna hurt. i hope it happens.
