LB Nick Roach agrees to terms with Raiders

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, March 15th, 2013 at 7:10 am in Oakland Raiders.

Linebacker Nick Roach, who has started 29 games in the last two seasons for the Chicago Bears, has agreed to terms with the Raiders, according to multiple reports.

ESPN-Chicago reported that Bears’ general manager Phil Emery said his team attempted to sign Roach, but was up against the salary cap and Roach “wouldn’t make the necessary adjustments,’’ instead accepting the Raiders’ offer.

Roach joins free agent signee Kaluka Maiava and incumbent Miles Burris on a team that is expected to part with three-year player Rolando McClain.

An undrafted free agent out of Northwestern, Roach (6-foot-1, 234 pounds) was originally signed by the San Diego Chargers in 2007 but signed with the Bears upon his release.

He is a veteran of 59 starts for coach Lovie Smith’s primarily Cover 2 defense, playing both the strong side and in the middle.
Roach started the final four games of the season for Chciago in place of Brian Urlacher and was considered the logical choice to take that position this season, with Ulracher a free agent.

The Raiders could employ Roach on either the strong side or the middle, as there have have been discussions about moving Burris inside.

Meanwhile, running back Mike Goodson, according to multiple reports, has signed with the New York Jets.

Goodson missed four games due to injury last season and seemed to be more comfortable in the zone blocking system than starter Darren McFadden. The Raiders have since junked the ZBS in favor of more gap and power schemes that suit McFadden.

Wiz was very solid at the end of the year at Center. Most of us forgot he missed most of camp, which explains his troubles early on.

    I agree

    thanks Duck!

between Camp, Bush and these guys listed above I’d say we might get a 5th round comp pick, but more than likely just a 6th or 7th

re: nnamdi eating in his car at Philly

Guys, nnamdi is a great guy, philanthropic as we know. He’s been trying, it seems, to ensure a film or tv career down the road.

It occurs to me he might be “special” in other ways, know what I mean?

Anyone ever notice him with the gals that always throw themselves at pro stars?

    Just asking, don’t know.

I’d really like Reggie to go get us a stud RT now. There are still some really good ones on the market. I had it as my #2 item heading into free agency. #s 1 (Bryant), 3 (Delanie Walker) and 4 (Wheeler) are already gone.

Just as long as it’s not Andre Smith.

Tough call, Winston has been used in zbs, not power blocking, so we would not know how he might do for us, but he would cost less.

Andre smith is a stud power blocker, but he would be expensive and may get fat after a new contract, and he has had injury problems….certainly would need some money to be based on playing time and a weight clause if you are going to sign him. More upside than Winston though.

McK needs to find a trade partner and trade down!

I think Zona or the Bills will want to move up to #3 and get ahead of the Eagles who may want Geno.

Also, if Joekel or Fisher fall to #3, than McK will also be on the phone with teams who need a LT who want to trade up!

And, as Cork said a few months back, Pollack and Knapp basically hounded his uncle out of coaching. That couldn’t have been a pleasant situation to come to and may have affect Wiz’s play level, even if he would never consciously give less than his best.

  • bcz24

Power blocking or zone blocking only refers to run blocking, KC isn’t a zbs team and they looked awful good running the ball. Winston is damn good as a pass blocker too.

Go check out some Dion Jordan highlights when you get a chance. Very fast, very fluid, very long. Keys to being an edge rusher in a 3-4. Desire is always a big factor as well and I’m in no position to say one way or another about that, though I haven’t heard any criticism along those lines, but he could be the next Demarcus Ware. Dare I say, maybe even better. No sure thing, but tremendous potential.

many believe he’s big and powerful enough to switch to a power blocking scheme. if you’re going the other way(like our lineman did last season), this is true. but if you have the physicality to beast up the man in front of you and plow the way on the outside for your RB, there shouldn’t be a problem.

    exactly.

and on another plus side, it will reunite him with Brisiel. means he knows how to play next to him, and visa versa … i’d say it would be a great signing.

Winston would be a good signing however, I am not sure 50% off Reggie will spend more than 2 mil per for any player in FA.

  • bcz24

The net gain/loss of players factors in as well. If you lose 5 free agents, and sign 6 you don’t qualify for a compensatory, regardless of value, or at least that is how I interpreted the rules.

  • Dakota

    Bcz,

It should not be hard for Winston to match barnes in terms of run blocking, and he would be much much better than barnes at pass blocking, so in my view it is well worth the risk.

I would certainly be happy with Winston at RT.

If we don’t sign a decent rt, or just sign some junk rt, it will be a clear indication that our pick will be Joeckel or fisher IMO.

Guess we could stick a 3rd round tackle out there, it worked okay for JV, but I hope we don’t risk that.

    Oline is the first pick.

    Barnes and Carlisle are done.

    Think about it:

Wiz and Veld are all we have.

Brisiel needs to rebound from an injury plagued year and he is turning 30.
Bergstrom MAY be able to take over at guard or tackle.

Any decent FA is beyond our budget and is already gone.

Fist pick is OT or OG. Guaranteed. Further it makes our D better by default, protects Palmer/Pryor and leverages Dmac and his contract.
