Raiders confirm Roach signing

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, March 15th, 2013 at 12:08 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Linebacker Nick Roach, who has started 29 games in the last two seasons for the Chicago Bears over the past two seasons, has signed with the Raiders, the club announced Friday.

ESPN-Chicago reported that Bears’ general manager Phil Emery said his team attempted to sign Roach, but was up against the salary cap and Roach “wouldn’t make the necessary adjustments,’’ accepting the Raiders’ offer.

No terms have been disclosed.

“Once I came out to visit, I knew it was going to be a fast process,’’ Roach told ESPN-Chicago. “It was a great visit.’’

Roach is expected to step in as the Raiders middle linebacker in place of Rolando McClain, who has yet to be released but is due just over $4 million in salary and has been a disappointment both on and off the field since being the No. 8 overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft.

“It’s going to be great to be a middle linebacker,’’ Roach told ESPN-Chicago. “I can’t wait to get with Raiders coaches and learn the scheme.

Roach will likely be flanked by free agent signee Kaluka Maiava and incumbent starter Miles Burris. Burris was the weak side starter last season and Maiava was predominantly a weak side player with the Cleveland Browns. Both players have enough athleticism to move to the strong side, which has more coverage responsibilities with the tight end.

Philip Wheeler, the strong side starter last season, signed with the Miami Dolphins as a free agent.

An undrafted free agent out of Northwestern, Roach (6-foot-1, 234 pounds) was originally signed by the San Diego Chargers in 2007 but signed with the Bears upon his release.

He is a veteran of 59 starts for coach Lovie Smith’s primarily Cover 2 defense, playing both the strong side and in the middle.

Roach started the final four games of the season for Chicago in place of Brian Urlacher and was considered the logical choice to take that position this season, with Ulracher a free agent.

He will soon travel to Baltimore as the recipient of the Bears “Ed Block Courage Award’’ winner, given to a player on each team that “exemplify commitments to principles of sportsmanship and courage.’’

With Roach signed, free agent linebacker Dan Connor reportedly left Alameda without a contract.

roach isnt being brought in to be a star, i view him as a stop gap player that can be decent and solid for 2-3 years until we draft a better player.

he is also versatile and can switch positions to cover for injuries or accommodate a drafted player.

And despite the fact that it almost never works for the teams that gave out those idiotic contracts, the same thing will happen again a year from now.

I can’t even express how happy I am that we are no longer doing business that way.

    ****************************************

Have you ever wondered why teams do this? I think one reason is Season Ticket Sales. If you have a bad year like Maimi had (sort of – did not make POs) and you need to get a stadium renovation bill passed and also have lagging Season Ticket Salems you need to make moves to build excitment. Without a top draft pick what are you going to do? In looking at their pics some do not even make sense. Replace linebackers who played well and hollow out your offensive line. A lot of this does not make sense. These guys are going to be in our predicament in a couple of years especially with slow cap growth.

I like jordan at d end in obvious passing downs, but i would rather have him be that lab that can line up over the de end in the elephant look.

I know its hard after some of our Head Coaches we had and AD, but what if we take them at their word – “Multiple” maybe a base 4/3 with a situational 3/4. They are getting versitle personal that can play effectively both ways. Even Hunter said he can stand up and play linebacker. That is where I think they are going because they said so. If the get a great NT and someone like Houston again then maybe 3/4 base with 4/3 looks.

  • Charlie

For those that have been around long enough you need to be aware that lineman and to an extent LB’s are the basis for the “star power” you are looking for.

I assure you Van Eeghan,Plunkett, Allen, Biletnikoff, Stabler, Brown, Tatum etc. were succesful because of Kinlaw,Keating, Pickell,Tooz, Millen, Davidson, Uphsaw, Shell, Dalby, Otto, Marvin and Lawrence- NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!!!

As we continue to build in the box talent you will see later round pick skill guys and DB’s start to flourish because they have time and space to work or the opposing team does not have five seconds to throw and is not getting their Oline to the second level.

There’s no doubt about it. It excites the fan base and gives the impression of being pro-active. I also think you have to account for the sheer pressure that front offices’ face to do something each off season.

    RAIDERS’ BIGGEST REMAINING NEEDS:
    1. Edge rusher: Almost surely needs to be addressed with our No. 1 pick. Failure to do so mean’s Reggie and DA’s defense is going to suk ballz again like it did last year when they ignored this need.

    2. RT: Right now we have 2/5s of an offensive line. Several really good veteran RTs are available. Cap is not an excuse. Lock in an RT and the line can become a real strength if they can patch up the guard spots.

    3. TE: Maybe Ausberry can take over but it’s a risky play. Most of the good ones are gone. Fred Davis can ball, but he may not be the choir boy type Reggie covets. Good options in the draft as well, but it may take a 2nd rounder to get a really good one.

    4. CB: Most would say it’s a huge need. I say, meh. Pass defense is more about the pass rush and then having adequate coverage players across the field. No need for a Millner or highpriced guy. We could even roll with Adams and Chekwa as the starters, IMO. But depth is needed here.

    5. FS: Vacant right now. Gotta do something. I’d be intrigued to see MM34 get a shot here or move Branch to FS and MM34 to SS. -

    Autumn Wind,

I think it’s what happens when you have non-football people making the final decision(s).

You could say, I suppose, that season ticket sales are a factor. Trouble with that is that once the fan base realizes that your team is still going to suck it backfires on you. And not only do you suck, but now you’re effed with the cap.

Kinda like the last years of the Al era.

Denver is doing what they need to try to maximize the couple of years Peyton has left.

They are tieing up some big money in the hope of winning a title the next two years.

    Just prior to signing Peyton:

At the other end of the spectrum are the Bengals, who have only $83.5 million in commitments for 2012. The Buccaneers, Titans, Redskins, and Broncos also are under $100 million.”

There is no “patching”the Oline. You are right about 2/5 and it is a real concern. Fixing the Oline helps the D by default.

That is where our first pick will be invested, the Oline

All the really impact Olineman are gone in FA.

The Dline will wait till our third round pick this year and we will go DT. Next year our first two picks will be DT and DE.

You don’t think we can afford to sign one decent $6-7 mil a year RT? With all the crazy huge money signings Miami has made they only have to take a $12 mil cap hit this year. I’m not advocating we follow their path in the least, but we can sign a decent player or two. We have way more than enough clear cap room between this year, when we should still be at least $20 mil under if we part with TK and McClain and next year when we’ll have like $75 million in room or some such crazy figure.

Can we at least buy a burger, or do we have to eat nothing but pancackes fished out of the dumpster while Reggie’s in charge?
