Raiders confirm Roach signing

Linebacker Nick Roach, who has started 29 games in the last two seasons for the Chicago Bears over the past two seasons, has signed with the Raiders, the club announced Friday.

ESPN-Chicago reported that Bears’ general manager Phil Emery said his team attempted to sign Roach, but was up against the salary cap and Roach “wouldn’t make the necessary adjustments,’’ accepting the Raiders’ offer.

No terms have been disclosed.

“Once I came out to visit, I knew it was going to be a fast process,’’ Roach told ESPN-Chicago. “It was a great visit.’’

Roach is expected to step in as the Raiders middle linebacker in place of Rolando McClain, who has yet to be released but is due just over $4 million in salary and has been a disappointment both on and off the field since being the No. 8 overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft.

“It’s going to be great to be a middle linebacker,’’ Roach told ESPN-Chicago. “I can’t wait to get with Raiders coaches and learn the scheme.

Roach will likely be flanked by free agent signee Kaluka Maiava and incumbent starter Miles Burris. Burris was the weak side starter last season and Maiava was predominantly a weak side player with the Cleveland Browns. Both players have enough athleticism to move to the strong side, which has more coverage responsibilities with the tight end.

Philip Wheeler, the strong side starter last season, signed with the Miami Dolphins as a free agent.

An undrafted free agent out of Northwestern, Roach (6-foot-1, 234 pounds) was originally signed by the San Diego Chargers in 2007 but signed with the Bears upon his release.

He is a veteran of 59 starts for coach Lovie Smith’s primarily Cover 2 defense, playing both the strong side and in the middle.

Roach started the final four games of the season for Chicago in place of Brian Urlacher and was considered the logical choice to take that position this season, with Ulracher a free agent.

He will soon travel to Baltimore as the recipient of the Bears “Ed Block Courage Award’’ winner, given to a player on each team that “exemplify commitments to principles of sportsmanship and courage.’’

With Roach signed, free agent linebacker Dan Connor reportedly left Alameda without a contract.

PFF is pure and complete garbage!!

Last offseason they wrote a 3-page article about Tyvon Branch and how he’s the best safety in football because he shut down Gronkowski. Gronk only had 3 passes thrown his way the whole game, because if you recall they trampled all over us that day using run game. Gronk caught 1 of those 3 passes. the other was overthrown. the 3rd it was Mitchell covering Gronk on the incompletion (LOL)

Ty Branch can’t cover anybody to save his life, be it RB/FB/WR/TE. If you guys watch the games, you already know this. If you go by stat geek websites, they say oh gee he’s lead the team in tackles for 3 years running, must be a GREAT player. No – he isn’t

I know its hard after some of our Head Coaches we had and AD, but what if we take them at their word – “Multiple” maybe a base 4/3 with a situational 3/4. They are getting versitle personal that can play effectively both ways. Even Hunter said he can stand up and play linebacker. That is where I think they are going because they said so. If the get a great NT and someone like Houston again then maybe 3/4 base with 4/3 looks.
    =====================================================

They said DA could only implement just over half of his defensive playbook/scheme because of personnel issues. Mostly, but not entirely secondary issues.

Raider football was defined by perhaps the best Oline in NFL history.

Yes passing has become more a part of the game than it used to be but no team will win without passing AND running.

The Raven’s ranked 11th in league rushing.

    Football is football.
You have to be balanced on offense and play defense to win and it all starts on the line of scrimmage.

That is how we had so much success with other teams “Failures and castoffs”

Plunkett, Christenson, Willie Brown, Bob Chandler, Clem Daniels, Art Powell, Lamonica etc etc. all thrived when they came to Oakland because we had the solid foundation of good lines in place.

    See my 163 post.

    Agree with your assessment.

Draft your solid core and use an occasional FA to plug a hole.

The core of your team must be drafted especially in the cap era and the protection of the rookie cap offers.

The FA only route is disastrous. The Raiders over the last decade show what happens when you draft poorly.

PFF is not the endall be all, but it’s a useful guideline. Much more valuable than the often groundless chatter of beat writers and talking heads, let alone the blind-faith worship and “Packer Way” of Reggie McKenzie by many fans who adhere to whatever he does and says like obedient dogs.

I appreciate the PFF info for those who share it. Keep it coming.

    >>>>

Nice to see a few reality based posters here.

And Rockstar… PFF only gave Branch a +6.0 last season, with a negative rating for pass coverage in 2011.

I am not calling you a liar, but I hardly believe they would be bragging him up that much off their own ratings.

In fact, if Reggie had paid the 26 bucks for their service he could have SAVED some money by re-upping Branch. A +6 rating wasn’t worth that contract. BTW, he was down to +2.3 last year. He’s an above average SS… which anyone watching would agree with. He makes some plays and he misses some.

In this day and age, its hard to “fall in love” or so to say with a player! FA screwed all that up! So I will get upset if a player that I liked is released, but that’s it! Now in 1980 when The Snake, The Ghost and The Assassin went to Houston…

FA is important but is not an end all be all. More often than not since 1993 it has killed the Raiders. If you build through the draft and work in some pieces in FA fine. If you do it at the right price better but what Maimi and KC has been doing not good except for us if we play them in a couple of years. With the Rookie salary cap and the new vet minimums the draft has only become more and more important.

Another thing that killed the Raiders is the old we will trade our 1st rounder to you for Moss, Seymour or Palmer. That has not worked out so well for us either.

  • Chris in NY

Wow. Shaughnessy signs for 1 year at a $1 mil base. Reports are that the Raiders never even called him.

Unless he’s really physically shot and the Raiders know this, this is a sure red flag that Reggie only wants guys that he brings in and has no interest in holding onto players that he wouldn’t get credit for acquiring. Ego and pride can indeed manifest in other forms than what you might see with a Chad Johnson or T.O. or Beechum type.
