Reports: Shaughnessy is latest ex-Raider

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, March 15th, 2013 at 1:24 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Defensive end Matt Shaughnessy will sign a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals, according to the NFL Network and ESPN.

None of the 17 Raiders who entered unrestricted free agency have come back to the team. The Raiders made efforts in that direction with Philip Wheeler and Desmond Bryant, but were priced out of the market.

Dumerville is just too cool of a deal to get.

Snagging him up after Denver screwed up on the deal…stealing a key guy from a hated rival like Denver?

It isn’t just for the fans to give us a bone..it’s cuz we NEED a stud pass rusher.

Even if we weren’t stealing him from the hated Broncos it would be a good signing.

So, the Cardinals say that they are not drafting a QB, meaning a competition between Hoyer and Stanton.

    I’m sure Fitzgerald is stoked.
    ++++++++++

Yeah, sure…..translation: We hope Geno falls to us, or if we call you on draft day, don’t take advantage of us…..cuz we are cool with Hoyer and Stanton….caugh.

I might be in the minority here but give me James Harrison before Dumerville. I love Harrison’s nastiness. We havent had that in a long time.

  • xraided

This. The penny-pinching signings have been great, but they only go as far as the bigger moves you make to help solidify the smaller transactions. Ive been impressed with what Reggies been able to acquire with just a little piece of cap, so far. But I still want to see more.

    _________________

we will be rolling in cap space next year. until then we probably won’t see anything big. Dumervil would be so key though!

Interesting…..I could have sworn you were an Al Davis hater……the theory goes like this…..we now have a new GM who will hopefully not make the same kinds of mistakes the prior GM made…..that doesn’t mean not using free agency, it means not signing headcases & POS players to giant contracts. Please do not impute Al’s fkups onto Reggie.
    ——————
    Dakota,
Dude you’re amazing. Your original post had nothing but splashy big name FA signings, except maybe for Justin Smith. The same type of splashy FA signings that Al Davis employed but most of the time didnt work out.
    +++++++++

Sorry, Kwame Harris, Gabril Wilson, Javon Walker and the guys like that were signed to big contracts by Al, but I would not call them quality free agents. That is the point….just because our last GM spent big money on bad players, does not mean our new GM should not spend money on good players.

    Winston and Dumervil = quality.

I am not advocating that Reggie bust the bank for crappy headcases like Al.

harrison is cool, but he is coming off an ijury filled season and is 5 years older. I don’t know, we’ll see what happens. u never know what a FA is looking for in a team. some want the money, some want to play for a contender, some want a chance to start, some just want out of their current place. I dn’t know what the raiders have to offer, def a chance to start, good weather, a solid fan base, maybe a good contract, not big bucks.

I’d like to see osi. I heard he was talking about being the defensive player of the year this year. sounds like he’s hungry. think the whole contract situation witht the giants got to him but he is explosive pass rusher.

Kwame Harris was never a big name FA. I wouldnt count Gibril either. Look at Seymour, Mario Williams, Carson Palmer, Nnamdi, Reggie Bush, Kevin Kolb (yes he was a big deal at the time) and none of them worked out. Hell, look at Wimbley who many of bloggers cried over. He was a great value FA but a lousy big name FA signing. My point, stick to value FA and draft picks rather than fulfilling the fans’ wish for a big name.

dj williams still available. bring in another LB and make them all compete.

    kerry rhodes still available.

Getting a good player and sticking it to the broncos. This has greatness written all across it especially with the market being so soft for DE’s. Hopefully we can get him on a good deal for a while.

it would solidify Reggie in my book. he has to know how much this will pump the fanbase up. as a new GM you want to make these kind of moves. i know i’d pull out a lot of stops to make it happen. he needs to put azzes in the seats(less amount of seats that is)

i hand it to them though… bottom of the league defense and they still knock on the door to the show every dmn year. it’s okay though, welker is one piece of the puzzle gone, next will be Brady. then Belecheat will be SCREWED!

    Aig

Agreed and that is what Reggie will do.

Dumerville is 29 with injury issues. (See Seymour).

No way will we offer a big contract. Too much risk.

We already have $32 million in dead money on our cap.

  • DJ Johnny

Maybe Reggie got on the phone with DA and asked him about Dumerville and DA told him to pass cuz he doesn’t want to put a strain on his friendship with Fox.

“I just have too much respect for Coach Fox. If Denver doesn’t sign him…let him go somewhere else. That’s not how we do business in Oakland and Coach is a good friend”.

This would be a move that AL would have relished sticking it to Bowlen/Elway, and the rest of the Broncs organisation and fans. However, this is not your father’s or even grandfather’s RAIDERS. This is the Mark/RM/DA Raiders, who are attempting to stamp their own identities on our beloved franchise. I along with 90% of the Nation on this blog hope it works out in the long run, and that at some time in the not too distant future we return to our rightful place as a dominating and powerful franchise.

Raiders.com: What are you most excited about for the coming season?

Coach Sparano: Honestly one of the things I am most excited about, and I haven’t had this in a long time, is just getting in a room with eight or nine guys and be able to coach eight or nine guys and make a difference with those eight or nine people. Over the last five years I have been a head coach where you’re dealing with both sides of the football, and you’re dealing with 53 or 80 guys – coordinator where you’re dealing with 40 guys sometimes and that type of deal. I really like shutting the door and getting to the Xs and Os part of things and getting to the one-on-one’s and building a trust that way. I’m excited about getting back to that and get some of that done. It’s a great feeling when you know you can run the football and run it well and there isn’t much they can do on the other side. It takes a lot of work to get to that point and it takes a huge commitment to get to that point. We’re going to chip away at this thing until we can get to that point and make sure that group becomes what we want it to become.

i am excited to see what Spano brings to the Raids.

If you get priced out of the market with Wheeler, Bryant and the rest of the 17 Raider free agents then you are NOT going to be getting into a price war for Elvis.
