Reports: Shaughnessy is latest ex-Raider

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, March 15th, 2013 at 1:24 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Defensive end Matt Shaughnessy will sign a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals, according to the NFL Network and ESPN.

None of the 17 Raiders who entered unrestricted free agency have come back to the team. The Raiders made efforts in that direction with Philip Wheeler and Desmond Bryant, but were priced out of the market.

And an AWOL center away from a ring not that long ago built almost entirely with FA’s.

different situation. Winning + Gruden brought in free agents for below market $ 1999-2002. Do you see anyone coming to Oakland now for below market rate?

Sometimes you have to take gambles. Reggie is running scared right now. He never had to deal with garbage teams in GB… he has no clue what to do right now.

Sorry to pee in your Corn Flakes… I know how much it pisses you off!

You never know what the motivation of a player will be, if the money is close and Reggie plays the “They didn’t respect you in Denver, come here and make them pay for their mistake twice a year” card, we might have a shot at signing him.

    ********************************************************

According to Bill WIlliamson from BSPN (who used to be a Bronco beat writer), it was Dumervil’s agent that dropped the ball.

Unless Reggie’s offering him more than the Broncos did, that approach probably isn’t going to work.
    _________

That does not change the underlying fact that the Broncos forced him to take a major pay cut….that can’t sit well with him.

    ********************************************************

Dumervil is going to get paid. He’s a proven pass rusher. Appealing to the Broncos’ “lack of respect” is only going to work if it’s accompanied by a large paycheck.
    +++++++++

well, at least you can see the issue now.

    ********************************************************

I’ve seen it from the beginning. That’s why from the beginning I told you that he was going to get paid by somebody that would most likely offer more than we would, and that appealing to a percieved lack of respect wasn’t going to work unless we offered him more than they did.

You’re grasping at straws, dude. Give it up.
    +++++++++++

Dumervil would not be the first player in the history of the NFL to sign with a division rival to stick it to his old team twice a year….the team that just tried to force him to take a significant pay cut…like I said if the money is close it could swing the deal. Other pass rushing DEs have not received big money in this market.

A trade that makes too much sense after watching Shaughnessy sign with the cards.

DE Darnell Dockett and Cards 2nd straight up for Carson Palmer

1.- Cards are really a good team with only one good QB away to be a playoff contender add Fitzgerald window is closing and they are desperate for qb help.

2.- Palmer or not Palmer doesn’t matter, we’re going to suck this year, without Palmer a 0-16 is probable

The only players Reggie Mac can get rid of the AREN’T Al Davis’ acquisitions are a few that HueJax brought in and a bunch that he brought in himself, and he’s gotten rid of some in those categories.

do you want him to keep players JUST BECAUSE they’re Al Davis’ players, even if they stink or are way overpaid?

The Tackle Per Snap Numbers for 2012 Oakland Raiders

    provided by ME

    McClain 567 60 9.45
    Burris 1044 96 10.88
    Burnett 77 2 38.50

Obviously these numbers tell a story. But what story do they tell? Obviously certain positions have the opportunity to make more plays than others…..obviously players who play in the middle can accrue more tackles by being able to access both sides of the field….this is why these numbers help….

When we look at Lamar Houston and factor that he averaged a Tackle every 14 snaps on the field and we then factor in that we can cut that number in half simply because he only plays on one side of the field we can find TRUE VALUE in his production and performance.

Important to note these numbers include special teams snaps and tackles.

I think it is important to highlight the BEST RAIDERS TACKLE PER STAT NUMBERS BELOW:

    McClaim 9.45 Plays Middle
    Branch 9.77 Plays Middle
    Hanson 9.93 Plays Alley Middle
Wheeler 10.28 Plays Alley Middle/To a Certain Side
Burris 10.88 Plays Alley Middle/To a Certain Side
    Checkwa 13.25 Plays 1 Side
    Mitchell 13.76 Plays Middle
    Houston 14.00 Plays 1 Side

Our 2 Newest Raiders have these numbers

Roach averaged a tackle every 13.4….Far behind Wheeler, Burris, and McClain

Maivia averaged a tackle every 16 snaps….light years behind everyone.

    HEY REGGIE?

    WHAT ARE YOU DOING!

  • realtruraider

It would be such an Al move, he would make sure the Donkeys didn’t get a chance to re-sign him, cap be darn, he would just give him a huge signing bonus and sign him to a 10 year contract so he could spread bonus across the whole 10 years…..actually not a bad idea

That article posted above about 1st round draft busts, only 1/3 make a probowl, only 1/5 make multiple probowls.

What everyone says…build thru the draft.

What many say…important to trade down or trade and acquire more picks and future picks.

What many others say…big spending in first days of FA always leads to disappointment.

John Madden…you need good players to win.

Much contradiction there, but add them together; it’s all about…

    - how well you draft in the middle-late rounds.
    - cheap savvy 2nd/3rd wave FA signings.

On that count McKenzie is doing a good job so far, and can see his general blue-print of how to improve a roster long-term.

Interesting…..I could have sworn you were an Al Davis hater……the theory goes like this…..we now have a new GM who will hopefully not make the same kinds of mistakes the prior GM made…..that doesn’t mean not using free agency, it means not signing headcases & POS players to giant contracts. Please do not impute Al’s fkups onto Reggie.

    Dakota,
Dude you’re amazing. Your original post had nothing but splashy big name FA signings, except maybe for Justin Smith. The same type of splashy FA signings that Al Davis employed but most of the time didnt work out. I pointed out that you should not be building through big name FA unless you are one or 2 pieces away from winning it all. The Pats won more SBs through their own draft then when they switched to bringing in big name FAs like that Ravens LB that is now out of the league. I’m a believer in value draft picks just like value FA. Wheeler was a value FA and count this year’s Raiders FA class in that.

FYI, I was once a huge AD fan but he lost me along the way in the past 5 yrs. AIG stood for Al is God btw.

    Dakota speaketh truth.

At some point he has to take a chance…a risk to get better.

Maybe he will, but he’s got some room now to fill a desperate team need.

God forbid he would do something to energize the fan base..a fan base that is desperate for SOMETHING good to happen.

Nick Roach is nice and I believe a solid signing…but throw us a bone…We’re fans…we like stuff like that.

This. The penny-pinching signings have been great, but they only go as far as the bigger moves you make to help solidify the smaller transactions. Ive been impressed with what Reggies been able to acquire with just a little piece of cap, so far. But I still want to see more.
