Report: Myers signs with Giants

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, March 16th, 2013 at 5:30 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Tight end Brandon Myers, who caught more passes in 2012 than any Raiders tight end since Todd Christensen, signed with the New York Giants Saturday, according to USA Today.

The Giants signed Myers after losing Martellus Bennett in free agency.

Myers caught 79 passes for 806 yards and four touchdowns for the Raiders last season as the receiver most trusted by quarterback Carson Palmer. He was considered one of the top receiving tight ends in free agency, although some scouting services downgraded his blocking skill.

Myers played nearly every snap for the Raiders last season. The other tight ends on the 2012 roster, David Ausberry and Richard Gordon, played sparingly.

Myers joins Philip Wheeler (Dolphins), Desmond Bryant (Browns) and Matt Shaughnessy as Raiders who had productive 2012 seasons but signed with other teams.

In other news, the Raiders confirmed a visit from cornerback Terence Newman, but made no announcement regarding a contract. ESPN reported the Raiders were visiting with linebacker Kevin Burnett, who played the last two season with the Miami Dolphins.

Reggie’s time to shine is the draft. With so many holes the Raiders can go BPA strategy. At #3 Dion Jordan is that guy.

    true

but what do you like about his game? he’s a freakish athlete, not necessarily a good football player.

    2012 sacks:

    jones 14.5
    werner 13
    moore 12.5
    jordan 5
    =======================================

Again, you are just siting a stat. And you might look at that stat and say, Jordan is not a very good player. But what you might not realize is they may have TRIPLE TEAMED Jordan each play, or ran completely away from Jordan or maybe the majority of time Jordan was in coverage. I remember one time, Jordan was out covering an opponents best WR in the red zone, because he was the best player on defense. You can’t teach that kind of skill set.

Remember, you are talking about the lst 5 days of free agency. This is the time that GM’s go out and over pay on guys. There are still some roster building moments to come. Look at the guys still available after the wave: Eric Winson, Adam Jones, John Abraham, Sedrick Ellis. There are some guys there that could help on the cheap. Next is the draft, and then final cutdowns where a player or two emerges. Gotta have money when the bargains show up.

could you imagine the REG taken a chance on #55 and him having a break out year finally. Comeback loser of the year.

I keep telling you guys Palmer isn’t going anywhere. Get used to it.

  • RaiderRockstar

Reg is gonna hang on to Palmer til at least the draft.

Reg will deal Palmer when the time comes and I think we may end up keeping #55 cause it actually saves us money.

    ***

    @ JRJ

BigMac is BIG on competition. He’s gonna keep Palm until he gets an offer he likes. He’s not gonna kick him out at the last minute to avoid a QB battle or controversy. If it gets to that, it does. Reg could very well be expecting that – in the event some team loses a starting QB post draft (OTA’s , camp , preseason) they will be desperate for a veteran with experience. Then Reggie is gonna find that sucker and see if they’re desperate enough to give up the farm, like Hue Jackson was, in order to “save” their season.

Regarding #55 I agree. You have to roll into each game with so many inactive players anyway. He’ll be one each time. He’ll be on the scout team and if he has an attitude? fine $$$. if he refuses to work? suspension $$$. We own him. All he can do is retire and then lose $$$. LOL. Maybe he’ll be a good little puppy and play along, then we’ll make him an emergency backup special teams player or something

Someone tarped Mount Davis… what does that mean to YOU? Why would they let their best young d-lineman go, and why all the moronic one year contracts?

    —————————————————————————-

Mount Davis? So they could sell out more and be seen on local TV? I guess they could have continued the farce of giving away tickets to make the sell out numbers.

Best young Dlineman was a backup to TK and not the answer to our need at NT. Unlike Meyers and Goodson, McKenzie WAS trying to resign Bryant and Wheeler. Bryant was not THAT damn good where we needed to overspend.

Only the big kid Sims got a 1 year contract. 30 and coming off injury, that’s a good idea, right? Roach and Maiva got 3 year deals.

    ————————————

70-30 he stays. If Reggie is serious about Geno Smith will be the deciding factor.

I tend to think there won’t be a trade. The Jags want to give Gabbert one more chance, he’s only been in the league for two seasons. The Jets are jammed up with that ludicrous contract they gave Sanchez. The Cardinals and Bills may be eyeing Geno and thinking they can wait us out to see if Palmer gets cut.

I don’t think Reggie is dumb enough to cut him, as cheap as he may be.

A scenario that’s just as likely as him being traded this off-season is him being traded in-season. If Palmer plays well, like he did last season, but we sukk anyway, some other team in contention that suffers a QB injury may come calling with some a decent pick or picks.

  • jackasspuria

I remember reading somewhere, can’t remember if it was a site like Silver and Black Pride or a media site, but there was speculation the Oakland may just keep Rolando McClain on the roster.

Writer speculated the Raiders are transitioning to a 3-4 and may just see what McClain can do in the system. Writer went on to say McClain’s collegiate career was in the 3-4 and maybe a return to the system he flourished would bring out the best in No. 55.

McKenzie won’t be able to blame Al Davis for a 4 win season. He will have to blame his HC and fire him.

Allen will need AT LEAST 7 wins to keep his job, imo. Playoffs the following year to keep his job.

The only possible way we could MAYBE get a #1 for Palmer is if Bradford gets in a car accident or something.

  • jackasspuria

The Baltimore Sun reports the Steelers are interested in free agent DE Elvis Dumervil.
Reporter Aaron Wilson considers the Steelers a team to “keep an eye on.” Dumervil has now been connected to the Steelers and Ravens since Friday’s contract fiasco, and expressed interest in playing for the Dolphins. If the price is right, he’d restore the pass-rushing heat Pittsburgh lost when it cut James Harrison.

Someone asked Wilson — a Ravens beat writer who has a habit of breaking Raider news for some reason — if Oakland was interested. Wilson said not a peep from the Raiders in terms of interest in Dumervil.

Raiders were 16-16 the two years prior to McKenzie’s arrival. At this point in time we have a much better QB than we did during the 16-16 stretch. If we go say 8-24 in McKenzie’s first two years it would be fair to fire him, say thanks for tearing it down and clearing cap space but we’re going to move forward with someone else building up the roster.

Also worth noticing is that the Raiders have not yet released Rolando McClain. McClain has been problematic on and off the field since the Raiders used the eighth overall pick on him in 2010. However, McClain was a star in college where he played inside linebacker in the 3-4 defense.

“This is moneyball plain and simple fellas. Get used to it.”

If it is, you can at least hope RM is as astute as Billy B. Were it not for a stupid non-slide by the non-Jason Giambi, we’d have beaten the Sox and gone to the Series.

There have been winning seasons with MB.

Unfortunately, the other similarities with the A’s are all too real–outdated stadium that won’t draw more fans. Owners need a revenue stream from ticket sales and ticket sales are initially good even if the team is bad, with a new stadium.

Even in good times, a stadium is a tricky deal, but these are bad times and Oakland cannot compete with SF for corporate dollars. The time for Oakland to have struck a deal for both the A’s and the Raiders has long since passed.

What father and mother want to park a car in Oakland or walk their kids to Bart in Oakland or take their kids to a ballgame in Oakland. It’s getting worse every day.
