Report: Myers signs with Giants

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, March 16th, 2013 at 5:30 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Tight end Brandon Myers, who caught more passes in 2012 than any Raiders tight end since Todd Christensen, signed with the New York Giants Saturday, according to USA Today.

The Giants signed Myers after losing Martellus Bennett in free agency.

Myers caught 79 passes for 806 yards and four touchdowns for the Raiders last season as the receiver most trusted by quarterback Carson Palmer. He was considered one of the top receiving tight ends in free agency, although some scouting services downgraded his blocking skill.

Myers played nearly every snap for the Raiders last season. The other tight ends on the 2012 roster, David Ausberry and Richard Gordon, played sparingly.

Myers joins Philip Wheeler (Dolphins), Desmond Bryant (Browns) and Matt Shaughnessy as Raiders who had productive 2012 seasons but signed with other teams.

In other news, the Raiders confirmed a visit from cornerback Terence Newman, but made no announcement regarding a contract. ESPN reported the Raiders were visiting with linebacker Kevin Burnett, who played the last two season with the Miami Dolphins.

Huff’s production did not match his salary. Gone. DHB’s production did not match his salary. Gone. Shaughnessy’s production did not match his salary. Gone. McFaddens production does not match his salary. He will not be resigned. Palmer’s does. That’s why he is still here. That’s the difference between me, NFL people and you guys.

I mean, what was McKenzie supposed to do, spend more money they dont have to keep players who arent producing, or go to spend money on players and hope they produce more?

Dont expect Kerry Rhodes or Nate Clements or Kevin Burnett or anyone else to come in here…..

Milliner is the best of a weak crop. He is a very good cover corner but not a playmaker. McKenzie is looking for play makers.

  • jackasspuria

Big Al was still running the show the No. 3 pick would either be Dee Milliner (Al Davis loved cornerbacks) or Ezekiel Ansah (Davis went for the football player Rolando McClain instead of the athletic physical freak Jean Pierre-Paul and that didn’t turn out so well).

Raiders were 16-16 the two years prior to McKenzie’s arrival. At this point in time we have a much better QB than we did during the 16-16 stretch. If we go say 8-24 in McKenzie’s first two years it would be fair to fire him

what up gents, my two cents on the Myers departure, Im not sad he is gone I hope this opens up the door for Auz I believe he can be JFinley like. IMO it would be very interesting to see us go the youth movement route and start Pryor, DMC, Auz, Moore and co., and see what we have in that core of players. If they do well then great we move forward with a young talented team on O if not and we play ourselves into the #1 pick then we bring Clowney to Oakland and start from there, its a win win in my book.

I don’t know if I wrote that incorrectly, or you misread, but, the point is the one time Al Davis picks the football player and passes up the freak, it backfires.

    Third round CB options?

    Darius Slay, CB, Mississippi State
Darius Slay finished his senior season at Mississippi State with second team All-SEC honors.

Slay was ninth in the nation with five interceptions, including four in his first three games. He also returned one of those picks for a touchdown and blocked a punt in the Bulldogs’ season opener against Jackson State.

NFLdraftscout.com has him ranked as the 10th-best cornerback in this year’s draft class, and the Raiders would be wise to give him a good look.

    Logan Ryan, CB, Rutgers

In terms of all-around cornerbacks, Logan Ryan is one of the best in the country. The junior from Rutgers finished last season with 94 tackles, four interceptions and 18 passes defended. Needless to say, he was all over the field. He earned All-Big East honors for the second consecutive season in 2012, and his ability to cover plenty of ground while making open-field tackles makes him a hot commodity at this stage of the draft.

    Nickell Robey, CB, USC
The Trojans’ defense had several flaws during their ugly six-loss season, but Nickell Robey was not one of them. His numbers aren’t exactly mind-blowing as he only finished with 52 tackles and one interception, but that’s only because opposing quarterbacks weren’t throwing the ball in his direction.
Even at an undersized 5’8”, 165 pounds, Robey possesses the speed and the skill set to become a solid pick for the Raiders if they choose to draft him.
Robey isn’t picking off passes left and right, but he plays a fundamentally sound defense that lets opposing quarterbacks know where he is at all times.
When teams are afraid to throw at a guy that is smaller than almost every point guard in the NBA, it speaks volume to that player’s game.

  • jackasspuria

Jadeveon Clowney is surely going to be a top 5 pick in next year’s draft provided he doesn’t get hurt and remains eligible at school.

Academics shouldn’t be a worry because the stories I’ve read say he’s a great student.

But, he still could get hurt while playing for the Gamecocks next year.

Look no further than former teammate Marcus Lattimore who could have been one of the first running backs taken in this year’s draft if it weren’t for an injury he suffered at South Carolina.

  • jackasspuria

The Denver Post reports it’s “unclear” if the Broncos and free agent DE Elvis Dumervil are interested in a new deal.
Beat writer Mike Klis believes the sides could reach a new accord by agreeing to a 4-5 year pact that sticks a good chunk of Dumervil’s 2013 salary into a signing bonus. There are other veteran options on the market, but the Broncos can’t afford to come away without one. They currently have a big hole at right end.

  • eastoaklandraider

Trading down and drafting Warmack, then with the 2nd rd pick drafting Barret Jones would be an excellent start to the draft for Reggie, then with remaing picks go all D.

  • raiderlization

The biggest mistake by the Raiders and Reggie would be Palmer being paid 13 mil for this season. I don’t see how anyone thinks he brings that value to the table regardless of who he is better than on our Roster! That woud be the Palmer issue in a Nut Shell! So the way he will not be back is without a pay cut. Same as Kelly!

  • Just Fire Baby

Palmer isn’t getting paid $13 millie this season.

They may decide to keep him, cut him, trade him, that is yet to be determined.

Paying him that salary has been determined. They aren’t doing it.

Someone tarped Mount Davis… what does that mean to YOU? Why would they let their best young d-lineman go, and why all the moronic one year contracts?

    —————————————————————————-

Mount Davis? So they could sell out more and be seen on local TV? I guess they could have continued the farce of giving away tickets to make the sell out numbers.

Best young Dlineman was a backup to TK and not the answer to our need at NT. Unlike Meyers and Goodson, McKenzie WAS trying to resign Bryant and Wheeler. Bryant was not THAT damn good where we needed to overspend.

Only the big kid Sims got a 1 year contract. 30 and coming off injury, that’s a good idea, right? Roach and Maiva got 3 year deals.

    >>>>

Adams also got a one year deal, which is a farce even if we cut him in training camp. Why give such a young player a one year contract? If he blossoms into a good player we have to throw even more money at him or he walks. If Reggie doesn’t think he can play he shouldn’t have signed him at all.

  • http://www.Raiders.com KoolKell

    Yeah I agree

  • jackasspuria

    Gdog

There’s a good reason as to why Philip Adams got a one-year deal — concussions.

Namely two he suffered last season.

While Adams stepped up admirably for Oakland at corner, a concussion-prone noggin is something to watch out for.

I applaud Adams for stepping up in run support — the opposing runningbacks knee hit him in the head and his neck snapped back awkwardly — and it was that play that caused the initial concussion.

Adams has been a fringe talent since the 49ers drafted and if he does blossom into an effective corner, he won’t cost that much. Well, that is unless he amasses 75 tackles and 7 interceptions next season.

    Then he’ll be expensive.

  • raiderlization

Those who think Palmer deserves his 13 mil this year are out of their minds. The only reason he is still on the roster is due to what we don’t know, not because of his 4000 yards of passing because he should have had a lot more TD’s mister! Do you like everyone else think we as fans don’t know the difference between a Garbage stat and a Probowl stat? We did have Gannon you know! We as fans were not born yesterday as some of you sound. The league wants RB’s to not lower their heads! LMAO! we are talking about a team that needs a team leader not a poser at QB. Just becuase he can look the part means nothing, this ain’t Hollywood!

Firebaby do you want to run the pickem contest?

Lobos are in the easiest division

  • jackasspuria

    Gdog,

    Here’s a Dec. 17 report on Phillip Adams…

Raiders CB Phillip Adams has suffered two concussions in the past three games.
He should be considered out indefinitely. Raiders management had high hopes for Adams when they claimed him off waivers from Seattle in early September, and he wound up overtaking Ronald Bartell at right cornerback. Oakland won’t be able to continue to rely on Adams due to his proneness to concussions.

why are you guys going round and around about Palmer and his contract? He either restructures or he’s gone period. IMO they dont want to tip their hand on what they plan to do in the draft, if they restructure Palmer now then everyone knows we are likely not gonna take Geno and that would make it harder to trade down.

  • Just Fire Baby

    These concussions are tough man.

You can pretty much see it happening with some players, they get more and more punchy on the field.

Both Myers and Adams are dangerously close.

    What up J,

I guess you forgot that Barret has played all over the line for Bama and was an outland trophy winner at LT, thats one of the reasons I want that guy, his versatility. BTW olinemen have shortest learning curve most the time they either have it or they dont so having 2 rookies on the line wouldnt be a bad thing imo and we would have one of the best olines in the league for years to come.

On Dumerville, ESPN radio said today that since that screw up Denver is ALREADY hit with 4 mill. against the cap…which means IF they sign him back and pay him 8 mill…it’s like they are paying him 12 mill anyway.

Dumerville would have to accept a 4 mill contract.

He may do it who knows.

The point was the screw up with Elvis created 4 mill in dead money. At least according to the guys talking about it on ESPN.
