Raiders add yet another veteran linebacker

The Raiders on Sunday signed veteran linebacker Kevin Burnett, the third linebacker added via free agency.
Burnett joins Kaluka Maiava and Nick Roach in the Raiders linebacking corps, which helps offset the departure of Philip Wheeler and the expected release of Rolando McClain.
Burnett, 30, started all 16 games each of the past three seasons — one with the San Diego Chargers and the past two with the Miami Dolphins.
Coincidentally, Burnett’s brother Kaelin also plays for the Raiders. He appeared in six games last season after being signed from the Raiders practice squad.
Burnett, 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds, has started 59 of the 120 games he played in during his first eight NFL seasons.

I remember when K. Burnett picked the Chargers over us (after leaving the Cowboys), over two years ago.

Decent signing by Mr. Reggie. Welcome to the Black Hole Kevin Burnett, even though you turned us down the first time around. All is forgiven. Thanks for thee update, Mr. Cork!

  • edward teach

This signing (and the other LB signings) doesn’t necessarily mean we’re going to a 3-4. Burnett has played both 3-4 and 4-3 in the NFL.

It just means we’re more versatile and can do either one, which is what DA and Tarver have said they’re looking for. Reggie said he was looking for depth and competition. At least at linebacker so far, he has that.

A lot of what we’re able to do defensively will depend on what’s available until Reggie has a full wallet and complement of draft picks next year.

looks like we’re moving to the 3-4.

    ===========================================

Which means either Star, or we trade for a pick in the 2nd round and get Jenkins or Jesse Williams. You need that great NT to make the 3-4 work, and we’ve got several in this draft to pick from.

  • eastoaklandraider

if we go to the 3-4 which it looks like we’re heading in that direction we will no longer have a need for a pass rushing end, but we would still need a olb with good pass rush skills but i think burris fits that mold.

Assuming Star is the first pick, we’ve got quite the respectable front seven going, and in a rebuilding year no less.

Mr. Duck. I must apologize. Reggie may just be the MAN! This was a great pickup.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Burnett coming off two straight years of 100 plus tackles and a few forced fumbles. Bascially same as wheeler and alot cheaper. DANSBY NEXT?? haha

  • angry little man

I dont think we need a top level receiver, we already have Moore, Streater, and Criner. Knapps offense or lack therof made them all look terrible.

    Draft Needs.

    1. D line, preferable a huge tackle, or D end.

    2. Running back, lets keep this defense off the field
as much as possible this coming year shall we?

    3. DB’s either thru FA or the draft dont matter.

    4. O line.

  • hendu

Im willing to give the Coaching Staff 13 and 14, not a choice unless Gruden walks thru the door…imo. If a 3-4 is the plan, and Allen and Tarver are all in, should be FUN IN 13… Get a #1 wide out and a few Corners in the draft, think I will have a Cold one, Now… RAIDERS!!!

    42. You shared your opinion, and you are dead wrong when it comes to the salary cap. Dennis Allen is a big question mark, I admit.

side note: a strong running game will take the heat off the passing game. which is what we didn’t have last year.

What I like most about this: For the first time in decades (literally), our entire linebacking corps consists of guys who give 100% on every play. Quite a refreshing change, no?

I’ve never been so glad to be wrong, and this might mean that the next great news is CP restructuring and taking a paycut! Go Reggie GO!

  • eastoaklandraider

Trade down and draft Warmack!!! Then pick up Bjones with the 2nd rd pick, then draft D the rest of the draft!!! Make it happen Reggie this is supposed to be what you are good at, dont disappoint.

  • hendu

66,Eor, We dont have a 2nd round pick, yet. Dbs,Dline and ol, draft em…

  • RaiderRockstar

It’s clear Reggie’s #1 priority in free agency was defense, specifically LB

now just re-sign Gaither & Carter for peanuts and let’s roll BigMac!!

  • eastoaklandraider

Hendu, thats why I said trade down.

  • RaiderRich510

    Tayvon Austin maybe????

  • backstageatapuppetshow

Burnett 1 tackle every 10.7 snaps…along the line of the same numbers as Wheeler…much better ratio than Roach (13.4) or Maivia (16.2)…

  • MiamiBornRaider86

    42. Well said. Sounds just about right.

  • eastoaklandraider

drafting 2/5′s of Bama’s championship line will be a great start to the draft, get’er done Reggie. WARMACK & BARRET JONES!!!

  • beach

There is no way the Raiders are drafting Geno. Don’t waste time thinking about the guy, boys. We need a defensive line, we need cornerbacks, we need a Right Tackle, and another running back.

Work the numbers, Cork. Where does this team stand salary cap wise? We need to get C. Woodson or Terence Newman in town!

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

hopefully MILES BURRIS can go back to his natural spot as OLB

HE was a pass RUSHER in college. Remember when he sacked the qb this year?? he flew at him.. LET HIM RUSH THE PASSER

  • Raiders for life

Cool, Raiders got the Burnett bros.
Contrary to what some think, I like like what the new Reggieme is doing.
As an added bonus, Reg has a pretty good slew of young talent on the future/reserve that hopefully come out firing both six shooters.
Do I think the Raiders compete for the AFC West? It doesn’t matter, I like the direction.

  • Que

slowly but surely people starting to see Reggie. lol. Let the man make his mark. And if he wanted to draft geno . so be it. This is his team to build in his image. Go Reggie. I never doubted ya . Like you said in that interview. Dont let the calm exterior fool ya. and what else did he say. HE LOVES THE RAIDERS.

quick check-in from the doctor. what do u expect from a former LB and DC? lots of linebackers, of course. looks like a 3-4 is coming. sounds good.

    houston, sims, bilukidi, crawford

    burnett, maiava, roach, burris, hunter

looks like they might be using burris as a rush backer, taking advantage of his pass rush skills.

signing newman actually makes sense, especially of they are thinking of getting milliner. newman serves as a bit of a stopgap, while they see if adams can be a starter. newman either would start or be the nickel, depending on adams.

i think ross is the FS.

so, it looks like milliner, shareef, or star. but i really believe geno is in play. he looked great at his pro day. it’s a chance to get the top qb in the draft. if they do that, palmer really could be released. signing VY to go with geno and pryor would cause a certain poster to cream his pants.

but will jax pass on geno in favor of gabbert/henne? doubtful.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Burnett is solid.. but that Ausbery highlight shows why he should have been playing ALOT ALOT more .. I blame knapp for that.

Every time Ausbery got the ball in his hands , he made stuff happen. Was an animal.

START AUSBERRY REggie!! Glad Meyers bounced

  • Raiders for life

I think Burris is gonna be a bad ass. Hopefully he doesn’t go through a sophomore slump. Year 3 he will be making things miserable for opposing offenses.

Just one request. All of you geniuses that have not got ONE clue as to what the Raiders are doing…STFU…and enjoy what you see. You have clearly established your credentials as prognosticators. Zero. I am seeing what has to be done, DONE. We get a defense and we’ll be just fine.

  • 8RaiderReign8

Reggie will trade down and draft a CB. Then he will draft best player available for the rest. That’s how you get competition at every level.

    You heard it here first.

  • 8RaiderReign8

Ausberry will be getting considerable playing time. If his blocking is like Myers, but he’s faster and a better Wr I think Reggie’s option was easy. Plus Gordon was always the blocking TE anyway.

Reggie can give himself sopme credit if he stops allowing young talented players walk outta here because they cost some money. He has to pay somebody. So pay the players that can actually play.

I got nothing personal against Reggie at all. He just made his job harder if you ask me the player he let go were all inexpensive talents he could easily have kept and still gained lots of cap space. There was no reason to let Des Bryant walk. Bryant, Bush, Murphy all very cheap and talented.

But hey! everybody has to learn I just hope he learns fast.

Getting Pryor in there when he did helped a ton. if he lets that kid walk, I would have blasted his fat ass.

Or are Nix and Bergstrom starting?

  • r00der

Digest this. Da and Reggie are NOT going anyway, this year at least. Put motors on the field (it is my belief EVERYONE at his level is a world class athlete), give ‘em a plan and MOTIVATE. Yeah. Yes, we can be competitive this year. So stop with the crap and get on board, you are seeing production from the head guys. Get it? Some will, others? just whiners.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

Preist, the young talent that left was dramatically overpaid, PERIOD. Get over it! The other guys that haven’t signed yet sucked. Take off your Raider glasses and realize DHB sucked. Myers wasn’t that good. Neither was Goodson, Wheeler, and Bryant. They all got way overpaid and it will be obvious in two years or sooner.

The signing the young talent you covet is the reason the Raiders sucked for so long. #AL’s_Guys

Some of these people in here act silly behind Reggie, he’s a average at best GM who’s finding his way. Cutting and trimming can be done by a blind man. The trick is do you know who and how to cut.

I can get my 5 yo niece to go tell everybody to get out. What I can tell her is how to determine who to NOT to tell to leave.

Reggie was under certain players contracts.. would have done more bad getting rid of them last year for future cap .. then this year. He let wimbley, Routt go each were making near 10 million a year.

Wimbley was 1 yr into a 45 million dollar contract. this year lets dhb and huff go.. so next year our cap will be really good

Its all about ridding the bad contracts. Next year will be the first year in 5 years Raiders will have all there draft picks so chill.
