Agent says Raiders still on Newman’s radar

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, March 18th, 2013 at 1:36 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The agent for cornerback Terence Newman said Monday his client is giving “strong consideration’’ toward signing with the Raiders.

Newman, who started 15 games with the Cincinnati Bengals last season, met with the Raiders last week and left the facility without signing a contract.

Since free agency began, the Raiders have been signing defensive players: linebackers Kaluka Maiava, Nick Roach and Kevin Burnett and defensive end Jason Hunter.

Through free agency and the draft, the Raiders will be in the market for cornerbacks as well as a free safety to replace Michael Huff, who was released at the start of the new league year.

In an e-mail, Ben Dogra of CAA Football said, “He liked the coaches and overall game plan presented by Reggie McKenzie. Terrence hopes to make a decision shortly after the owner’s meetings. He is considering Oakland and Cincinnati.’’

Newman, 34, played for the Bengals last season after nine seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.

wow….great moves by Reggie I must say….we for sure will be a top 10 force in the draft in 2014

    Sims?
    Maiava?
    Burnett?
    Roach?

Boy gonna be a long year…..I guess i will enjoy tailgating again before with my head hanging low walking back to BART
    ===========================================
    Oh, bullsheet.

Not the part about it going to be a long year…

The part about your head hanging low.

You’ll still be as fired up and combative as ever.

Personally, even though I know the RAIDS are going to suck in 2013, I’m still really looking foward to the season.

Going to be a lot of losses, but there’s also going to be a lot of excitement watching this roster get turned over.

It’s going to be fun watching the change happen, analyzing the new players, debating what should happen next and watching TITS twist in the wind.

    Keep your head up.
    *************************************

99…..tired of losing….most of my life this team stinks

I envy you old guys for witnessing some great Raider moments

Guys around my age or younger see what? Embarrassment….combative? yeah maybe with it being toned down considerably

Desmond is not bad. It’s just that Cleveland got a joke of GM in Lombardi. WTF were they thinking when they hired him?

Mike is a much better GM than the one we have right now if I had my druthers I would take Mike right now in the blink of an eye. Mike was very instumental is helping us biuld that last team that went to the SB. Quiet as kept. people think it was Bruce Allen and it wasn’t it was Mike and Al Davis. Bruce was the capologist.

    Taken from another raider board

“I did some googling. One falcon site was high on him and thought it should be a priority for the Falcons to resign him (obviously before he signed here).

PFF has some good things to say about him too:

    “3. Vance Walker, Defensive Tackle

Walker is yet another young, late-round draft pick the Falcons were successful in finding and developing. He has been decent at making run stops with a Run Stop Percentage of 6.7%, and avoided mistakes with no missed tackles or penalties. He was limited by the rotation at defensive tackle, and played in only 50% of snaps, but he has the talent to be utilized even more.”

2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

    Vance Walker, DT, Georgia Tech

In his first year as a full-time starter in 2007, Vance Walker tallied 14.0 tackles-for-loss and 8.5 sacks. As a result, the 6-2, 293 pound defensive tackle earned First Team All-ACC and Third Team All-America honors. Walker (one piece of a great defensive line at Georgia Tech) is an intuitive run stopper, but he does so much more than that. His ability to get into the backfield gives opposing quarterbacks nightmares. Walker might not be the most physically imposing tackle in the draft, but he is consistent. During the 2007 season he had a tackle-for-loss in 11 of 12 regular season games and his consistency has not gone away in 2008. If that trend continues throughout the rest of his collegiate career, Walker will be a safe pick for any NFL team. There is still a lot that Walker can do to increase his draft stock (like have a good senior season with the Yellow Jackets and have a good scouting combine), but at this point his ceiling is probably in the second or third round. Even if Walker garners more national attention and All-ACC accolades, his stock will not rise too much more until Senior Week and the Combine come around. 11/24 Update: Walker’s ankle injury has slowed some of his production and he might miss the team’s final regular season game against Georgia. As a result his numbers in 2008 (3.0 sacks, 8.5 tackles-for-loss) come nowhere close to his breakout campaign of a year ago. Even so, the injury is not major and most NFL teams will like Walker’s versatility and speed. 2/11 Update: While other defensive tackles like Boston College’s Ron Brace, Missouri’s Evander Hood and even his former teammate at Georgia Tech, Darryl Richard, continue to move up draft boards, Walker is moving down. He needs to add weight before the combine to show scouts that he can beef up a bit. Even if he is one of the faster tackles at the NFL Combine, he will also be one of the weaker. That would be fine if he was a wide receiver, but speed for defensive tackles pales in comparison to the importance of strength.

    Nice bargain basement signing.

It doesn’t look like McK is going to draft a DT like Star or Floyd with that #3 pick huh?

The pick may still wind up being a pass rushing OLB/DE like Jones, Ansah, Jordan or maybe Werner?

Atlanta Falcons: Vance Walker is unsung hero of the defensive line

    3:44 pm January 4, 2013, by D. Orlando Ledbetter

FLOWERY BRANCH – Defensive tackle Vance Walker is one of the unsung heroes of the Falcons defensive line.

The former Georgia Tech standout, who made the team after being drafted in the seventh round of the 2009 draft, was a major contributor while playing 51.9 percent of the defensive snaps during the regular season.

Walker has been ready whenever the Falcons have called. He played 84 percent ( 48 of 57) of the snaps against Tampa Bay on Nov. 25 and 80 percent (39 of 49) against Washington on Oct. 7.

He had a low of 26 percent (15 of 58) of the snaps against Arizona on Nov. 18.

“He’s done a very nice job for us in the rotation,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said on Friday. “I think he’s probably been our most productive defensive tackle in terms of pass rush this year statistically. He’s a very good anchor point. He has a very good understanding of what we are trying to do and he understands his role in the rotation.”

Walker has three sacks, 32 tackles and a forced fumble. He splits time with Corey Peters, Peria Jerry and Jonathan Babineaux.

“(In evaluating) a defensive tackle, you have to really watch the film,” Smith said. “You don’t necessarily look at the stat sheet. They do a lot of dirty work in terms of taking on multiple blockers on most plays.”

Walker is ready to contribute in the playoffs.

“It’s very exciting,” Walker said. “For the most part, we’ve got to have a lot of focus. Being here for the last three years and playing in the past two playoffs games, unfortunately, we didn’t make it to where we wanted to be. We’ve learned a lot from that and it’s going to take great focus. It’s definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

While Walker has had a strong campaign, he believes he can contribute more.

“I’m not content with anything,” said Walker, who started eight games this season. “But at the same time I want to be better than what I was last year and at the end of the day, I want to help the team win a championship and win that ring.”

He was used much more sparingly under former defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder. He had just two starts before this season and his previous high for tackles was 18 in 2011.

“Now, is not really the time to look back on my accomplishments,” Walker said. “We are still playing. As long as I can keep playing and helping out my team, that’s the best thing that I can do.”

He doesn’t mind doing the interior dirty work.

“There are a lot of plays like that, whether if it’s myself, Corey, Babs or Peria; where we get in the face of the quarterback or we hit him right before he throws,” Walker said. “Sometimes it leads to an interception or a bad pass. A lot of those things are effective.”

Babineaux, who has 3.5 sacks, credits Walker for being a disruptive force inside.

“Vance has been doing pretty good,” Babineaux said. “He’s coming along from last year to this year. That’s what we needed. We needed a lot more from him. . . he has grown a lot since last year.”

It’s usually hard to get sacks from the defensive tackle position, but Walker would like to have more.

“We like to have much better sack numbers, but all we can do is keep working hard and just strive for excellence,” Walker said. “It’s something that we’ve got to keep working on. For the most part, we are affecting the quarterback, but we just have to get him down.”

Walker’s strategy in the trenches is simple.

“As far as defensive linemen, it’s all about being physical,” Walker said. “We have to play stronger than the other guy. That’s pretty much the bare bones of it since Pee Wee (football). We just got to line up and beat the other guy.”

Walker is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season and would like to return to the Falcons.

“I’ve definitely played the hand that I was dealt,” Walker said. “I’ve done the best that I could have with what I was given. I have no regrets about it. I’m happy to be here in Atlanta. Everything that God has put forth for me has worked out. I’m not taking anything for granted, first and foremost is the Super Bowl ring.”

But these cats just do not comprehend that concept. they look at his stats someplace else and think is can be extrapolated here.
