Winslow a possibility? Walker signed

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, March 18th, 2013 at 2:57 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders are investigating the possibility of signing tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. as a replacement for Brandon Myers, the NFL Network reported Monday.

Winslow was released by the New England Patriots last September and did not play in 2012 after knee surgery.

In other news, the Raiders signed defensive tackle Vance Walker.

Walker, 6-foot-2, 305 pounds, is the sixth defensive player the Raiders have signed since the beginning of free agency, joining linebackers Kaluka Maiava, Nick Roach and Kevin Burnett, defensive tackle Pat Sims and defensive end Jason Hunter.

In four seasons with the Falcons, Walker has played in 58 games with 11 starts.

How about a Dline of Houston, Lotuleile & Clowney (3-4 obviously). add to that 4 active LB’ers who can rush & tackle. I like this approach. We just have to win the Clowney Bowl. a #3 pick next year should be good enough to get Clowney. The 2 premier QB’s will go 1 & 2.

crawford and hunter backing up at DE.

burnett/roach/maiave/burris (who will rush the passer like in college).

kaelin burnett, goethel, kurn, clayton and or/harris backing up.

    that’s our front 7.

    newman/adams/ross/branch

underwood, francies, chekwa, jones backing up.

milliner would mean newman is the nickel.

i said all season that reggie would bring in twenty new players for 2013. everyone in the nfl says the raiders roster lacks talent and depth.

this is reggie’s job. he’s a talent evaluator. he is attempting to gut the team of overpaid players and replace them with multiple similarly-talented players. so far, i think that’s what he’s doing.

he has to field a better team at a 90 million cap. that means lots of lesser-known, high upside, young and hungry players across the board.

he is offering opportunity to young players who have yet to completely make their mark on the nfl, but have shown the potential to do so.

this is the hand he has right now.

i liked bryant, wheeler, and myers. hate to see them go. but i know what they are. solid players who have reached their potential already.

the guys reggie is bringing in are just as good with more upside, for less money.

what else can u ask of the man?
    ——————————

What a load of horse crap. A very elegant way to justify “dumpster diving”

    ******************

it’s the way it is. a 90 million cap when everyone else has 120, means u dumpster dive.

    here’s reggie’s pitch:

“come to oakland and compete to start. give yourself the chance to become a guy who gets paid later instead of going somewhere ese to be a career backup.”

it’s enticing to guys who feel they could start if they were only given the shot.

oakland is offering opportunity right now.

Jon Gruden relayed a story about the trade to the Bucs.

Gruden said Al Davis told him he got a call from Tampa asking about what it would take to get Jon in a trade.
Davis jokingly said two 1st round picks.
And Tampa replied, OK, anything else?
Gruden said Davis was shocked and jumped on the trade.

    ———————————————-

I believe Al also got cash in the trade.

ET, You remember Buster Rhymes and Stanley Wilson I met both them boys when they cam eto play stanford when Walsh waas coaching them. Busters name was stolen by the famous rapper as a pun. That team with Jamelle Holloway was sick….lol

    ********************************************************

Haha. I was at that game, too.

Didn’t OU almost lose that game? If I remember they picked off Guy Benjamin in the end zone with about a minute left?
    *********************************
Hell yeah! Walsh was a helluva coach. But Buster ran a punt back for a TD to win it I think.

i think bergstrom will be the new RT, and nix will compete with someone like carlisle at LG. it’s all about the youth.

a cheap but good vet here and there, like newman, winslow, and VY.

    geno/milliner would be my guess.
    **********************

Carlisle is done. He wanted to retire last year. Don’t expect him back. I do expect to see Wiz 2.0 slip back into OLG and see Parsons backfill at center. ORG & ORT are up for grabs.

You say it’s dumpster diving. I say it’s bargain shopping.

I watched the play Burnett pulled against the Raiders for a pick six off Carson.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I have yet to see ANY of the LBs on our team–current or departed, make a play that tight.

    Wheeler who?

Free 6th round pick this year! Oh yeah, SuperBowl baby!!

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

The funny thing is DOLPHINS passed on wheeler last year for league min.. The system allowed Wheeler to blitz and look good. ..next thing Dolphins sign Wheeler for 26 million.

Go back and look at wheelers stats.. he was avearging in the 60-80 in tackles around 2009-2011

he didnt even start most of the time.. till he came to the Raiders. No reason why Kaluka cant match the production.

Cant wait to see him in Tarvers/Da System.. attack style of Defense

yea i’m not doggin it. we will fill in solid stars next year… the current starters will mostly be backups and rotational guys next season. Reggie will make more splashes when we’re 50 mill under the cap and fill it all in, especially on defense.

Priest, folks can call USC tailback U if they want to, but I’ll put OU up there with anybody when it comes to running backs.

    Steve Owens

    Adrian Peterson

ET that was fun reminiscing man. What great football that was back then. It’ll be great to the Raiders rebound if Reggie can get this going I’m veery hopeful despite my seemingly anti-Reggie rants I know he knows talent I just hope he learns the rest of the job to go with it.

I’m in your corner Reggie believe it or not…

  • Scourge

I give RM credit for signing Wheeler when nobody else really had interest in him. Wheeler was good not great, he was active but light in the pants.

It just shows you how bad our defense was when a middle tier player leads your team in tackles.

    Also read this

Bad GMs pay a little bit too much to guys who were late round picks and grew to be above average because “locking up your own talent” is what good NFL teams are supposed to do…

Good GMs realise that they found the guy in the 7th round, trust that their scouting department can repeat and find a replacement, wish him good luck and send him on his way.”

Interesting.. certainly doest apply in all cases.. but some I guess it does.

very true statement. look at the most recent teams that have been to the show or knock on the door every year… they’re built from the draft and fill in some splash signings(not go nutz like the Fins just did). yes we have a while to go, but that’s the key to success and everyone knows it(talking to all the whiners who wanted big ticket FA’s)

Man, you have to love that the organization just seems more open now.

God bless Mr. Davis, but his stranglehold on the franchise had run it’s course long ago.

I know a lot of people are down on Reggie. And the one BIG knock for me was his selection for HC. It didn’t make sense to me.

But, as far as his dealings with the one little draft he had, and his FA moves, I honestly feel the franchise is in better hands right now.

I think a lot of outside people (other fans, teams) see what the Raiders are becoming and they’re getting worried. Especially in KC, SD and DEN.
