Allen wants Raiders in it for the long haul

It may not be the message the fan base wants to hear after not having enjoyed a winning season since 2002, but coach Dennis Allen believes in patience and building a foundation for lasting success.

Talking to reporters at the NFL owner’s meetings in Arizona, Allen lauded the business models of teams such as New England, Atlanta and Baltimore.

“We’re really not into microwave economics, where you’re trying to get everything done right now, you’re trying to get out and make a big splash and you say, `Well, we won March,’ ‘’ Allen said. “We want to win November, December and January. That’s what we want this team to do (eventually).

Talking about the importance of building through the draft, Allen said, “If you want to look at the teams that have been able to draft well, they’re teams that, they’re in this year, they’re in next year, they’re in the year after that and the year after.

“That’s what we want to be . . . we don’t want to be a flash in the pan, where you show up for a year, and here we are, a playoff contender, and the next year you don’t hear from us. We want to build a team that’s going to compete year-in and year-out.’’

Regarding Carson Palmer and his $13 million salary, Allen declined to address the quarterback’s contractual issues, stressing that Palmer is currently the Raiders No. 1 quarterback but that every position would include competition.

An Allen Q&A from today’s press session at the owner’s meetings can be seen at this link on Raiders.com.

    Hey Seymour, pay attention my point is why do they get rehired as soon as they get fired?
    ======================================

    I agree with you. There is a coaching “fraternity” and they are all friends. How the hell do you think Hue Jackson ever got another job. But some of that is compatibility with ideas and systems. You can’t take a power running Oline guy, and a WCO OC and mix that with an option HC. It would be a mess.

  • RaiderRetribution

    St. Louis will draft a QB, 1st-3rd round, that is a fact.

  • Priesttj12

    Norv Turner has been a HC 3 times and OC 3 times why?

    The NFL has some issues that need to be resolved…..period

    Guys a beast. Perfect NT for a 3-4.

    As much as I have respect for Sparano the guy has been fired 3 times in 5 years.

    ——————————————————————————

    Back to the Oline, where he belongs.

    We didn’t hire him to be a HC or OC.

  • RAIDERMAN99

    7. Sean Renfree, QB, Duke: Renfree is a traditional drop back passer and looks the part with a tall, filled out frame. He has a strong arm to easily make all the throws and does a nice job working through his progressions to find the open target. Renfree shows excellent chemistry with his receivers and is a confident thrower, never appearing shy to take chances downfield. The career statistics aren’t glamorous (32-30 TD-INT ratio), but he has all the tools NFL scouts look for at the next level. And it won’t hurt that his collegiate head coach is the same offensive mind that mentored Peyton and Eli Manning.
    =============================================
    This is an interesting write up.

    I remember watching Duke lose their last game, they actually blew it big time, fumbling at the opposition’s (was it Cincy?) GL and giving up a quick score, but was very impressed by their offensive scheme.

    Renfree played decently and really had chemistry with a rcvr named Connor Vernon or something like that. Great hands on that guy.

    I don’t know who the Duke HC is or who the OC is, but you could tell that team was well prepared and the scheme was darn good. They got everything they could out of their guys.

    The exact opposite of Krapp.

    I’d be interested to not only see Renfree drafted, but bring that Duke staff in to replace Tits and Olson.

    Damn, 99!!!!

    How can you write this guy off already?

  • CDERaider

    Olson sucks but our offense doesn’t need to be complicated – just run a base power offense with off tackle run plays, double TE sets, play action deep passes to Ford and Moore, lots of screens to Reece and DMAC and we’ll be in games.

    =============================================

    Wasn’t Mike Nolan Turners DC in Washington and then Nolan hired Turner when he was HC of the Whiners? Kind of proves your point. But then, Dallas had one of the worst offenses in the league when Jimmy Johnson hired Norv, and he not only turned it around but ended up developing some of the best players ever to play the game.

    The second Norphus starting working with Alex Smith, Smith started to show signs of life. Norph may not be the best head coach but he certainly is one of the best OC’s, X and O, and player developer the league has ever seen. Priest, if you developed Aikman, Emmett and Irvin, someone would probably give you a second chance too.

    Ford in a contract year, Moore in a contract year (well, not really but he needs to ball out this year if he wants a decent 2nd contract), DMAC in a contract year, Palmer in a contract year (more or less), Reece in a contract year.. We will def have motivated skill players.. Just don’t F it up with BS scheme and playcalling – keep it simple and let them make plays.

    Not true. I’ve debunked this myth many times in here. Allen’s first choice for OC was Krapp. Now, the DC, ST and other coaches are a different story. But Krapp was first choice. Hired just 2 days after DA was announced as HC, I believe. It was a buddy-buddy deal, no doubt.

    656,

    You’re thinking of David Cutcliffe (HC Duke). Came over from the Vols where he was OC…and a good one. Went to Duke to revive the program, and did.

    They will draft Joekel and move Albert to the right side where he belongs.. Sux cuz Joekel is very good. If he’s still at #3 and we can’t trade (unlikely) we take him without any reservation.

    This entire offense is going to be tied to the QB. And rightfully so. Especially if we draft Fisher at 3, or trade down for one of the OGs.

    Palmer or Pryor, not Olson will get the wrath if the offense stinks.

    DMAC as well with an offense tailored for him.

    How could it possibly end up being the OCs fault?

  • RAIDERMAN99

    Not so much writing OLSON off, (although to be honest his resume doesn’t impress) it’s just that I’m positive TITS HAS TO GO.

    So whoever replaces Tits is naturally going to want his own OC.

    ===========================================

    Yeah, but if you remember, McKenzie took a long time to reach a decision on a Head Coach. lst was Mike McCoy,then Mike Tice, Morhingweg, and finally came down to Allen. Allen is a defensive coach, and he needed a veteran play caller. Not many of those were available. He went with the best that was out there, and the rest is bottom dwelling football history.

  • J Hill

    But Krapp was first choice. Hired just 2 days after DA was announced as HC, I believe. It was a buddy-buddy deal, no doubt.

    —————————————————————————–

    I missed your debunking, lol.

    I’ll take your word for the OC position. I gave Knapp the benefit of the doubt based on Palmer and DMac being healthy. Didn’t see any way he could eff that up.

    I still wonder what our season ends up like if we just run the clock down, and kick the field goal to win in Atl.

  • CDERaider

    Olsen is another one of those dudes ‘on the inside’ who keeps getting jobs even though he is terrible everywhere he goes..

    He just says ‘all the right things’ (literally a quote from Allen’s interview saying why he hired him – without even knowing him before the interview, for real)..

    Sad.. but again, its part of the ‘Big Reggie’ stealth rebuild plan, firing the Greg Olson’s and the Dennis Allen’s of the world is easy (if/when they fail) and besides somebody has to hold the clipboard while we get this roster/cap sorted. I think Reggie is doing what has to be done and this time next year the Raiders will be in a *great position* – clean cap, very little dead money, solid core of players on D and Oline, full slate of draft picks and the newest up and coming HC in the league Jason Tarver running the show.

  • J Hill

    So whoever replaces Tits is naturally going to want his own OC.

    —————————————————————————–

    What if the new GM is a lot more like Al Davis than you give him credit for?

    You give him credit for having the stones to fire his head coach after just 2 years of following HIS plan. Very Davis like.

    Now what if he makes the new HC keep the assts already under contract, a la Al Davis?

    Yeah, I’m guilty too. Many of us here looked the other way and took another swig of kool-aid. The guys calling for his head from the outset were right.

    Man, who knows. That’s the type of win that can springboard a team, I agree. Still, perhaps the same could have been said about the Pitt game and look how it worked out. Nah, I’m convinced there was nowhere to go but down with the Krappster.

    Anyway, one last comment and I’m out…

    Carson Palmer is 2 for 2 on the NFLN the last 2 days.

    Seymour mic’d yesterday for the Buc game that ended with a terrible CP pick.

    I hope so. People got to get a grip, man! As long as I dont hear and with the 3rd pick, Geno Smith, Raiders, Im good!

    i’m good with this;

    Draft analysis; Oakland Raiders Grade: B
    The Raiders executed two trade downs which netted them a 2nd round pick from Arizona (Eric Fisher), then a an additional 3rd and 5th round picks from Tennessee (Dion Jordan) to get Sharrif Floyd, DT, Florida at 10
    that addressed the departure of Richard Seymour and with their 2nd pick they too Barret Jones at (40) – the weakness at RG and RT could be addressed by the versatile Jones.

    Leon McFadden, CB, SDSU was taken at 66 and was a bit of surprise, as everyone had tabbed Sean Porter or a pass rusher. But CB was a nightmare for Oakland having parted ways with Ron Bartell and are unlikely to re-sign Shawntae Spencer, the Raiders may already be in the market for Tracy Porter or another free agent on the other side, unless Phillip Adams makes a quantum leap.
    As usual, the weakness at pass rush was not addressed, but the losses in free agency and the lack of a clear cut dominant rush end forced Oakland to take a chance with their traded pick to take South Carolina’s Malliciah Goodman, the 6-4, 276 rusher out of Clemson. He pulled a disappointing 26 reps at the bench press, but his 36.5 inch arm length and improved mid 4.6 at his pro day raised his stock a bit, although Oakland really liked Zaviar Gooden.

    with Sean Porter still on the board, the Raiders instead went for Stedman Bailey from W.Virginia. Darrius Heyward-Bey is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is due over $7.7 million, The raiders didn’t like how Denarius Moore regressed and need a kick returner. Bailey was a mong the nation leaders in every catching receiving category and adds another target in a growing young, talented group.

    the next pick was strange, rather than take Cierre Wood they went with OLB Herman Lathers from Tennessee, Lathers is smaller than the Raiders usual OLB’s at 6-2, 224, but finished his career with a terrific season and reached double digit tackles on 6 occassions. The Raiders were unsure to bring back Phillip Wheeler, and may look to add another vet in free agency.

    at the 6th round the Raiders took Kwame Geathers, DT, Georgia , who fell nearly out of the mid-rounds. The problem is that his upside isn’t high, which has shown in his lack of development over the last couple of years in college, and many just thought he had schematic deficiencies, but he was originally recruited as a 4-3 defensive tackle anyway, this looks to be solid pick.

    At one 7th round pick, BYU’s Braden Brown was taken. Brown started 38 consecutive games at RT and was a team leader in “knockdown blocks”, a first team all-independent player…likely to get opportunities as RT was a turnstile, Willie Smith, then Tony Bergstrom ended up playing it

    the final 7th round pick (awarded via compensation for Stevie Brown) made a lot of sense, and the Raiders might’ve gotten a steal – Jake Stoneburner shaved a 10 of a second of his 40 time, caught balls clearly showing body control and burst. – he was a WR/TE hybrid, he appeared to be a TE on the rise. Brandon Myers might not be expected back as the Raiders are filling many holes.

    Raider analysis; addendum; OLB/DE Quanteras Smith, DT AJ Francis, FS, Jakar Hamilton FS/SS Kemel Shmael, CB Travis Howard, SS/OLB DeVonte Holloman, FS Vaughn Telemaque, OT Matt Summers-Gavin, QB Peter Lalich, QB Jordan Rodgers

    FA Nick Roach, Kevin Burnett Kaluka Maiva, Vance Walker, Terrence Newman (hopefully)
