Allen wants Raiders in it for the long haul

It may not be the message the fan base wants to hear after not having enjoyed a winning season since 2002, but coach Dennis Allen believes in patience and building a foundation for lasting success.

Talking to reporters at the NFL owner’s meetings in Arizona, Allen lauded the business models of teams such as New England, Atlanta and Baltimore.

“We’re really not into microwave economics, where you’re trying to get everything done right now, you’re trying to get out and make a big splash and you say, `Well, we won March,’ ‘’ Allen said. “We want to win November, December and January. That’s what we want this team to do (eventually).

Talking about the importance of building through the draft, Allen said, “If you want to look at the teams that have been able to draft well, they’re teams that, they’re in this year, they’re in next year, they’re in the year after that and the year after.

“That’s what we want to be . . . we don’t want to be a flash in the pan, where you show up for a year, and here we are, a playoff contender, and the next year you don’t hear from us. We want to build a team that’s going to compete year-in and year-out.’’

Regarding Carson Palmer and his $13 million salary, Allen declined to address the quarterback’s contractual issues, stressing that Palmer is currently the Raiders No. 1 quarterback but that every position would include competition.

An Allen Q&A from today’s press session at the owner’s meetings can be seen at this link on Raiders.com.

Coach Dennis Allen confirmed that the Raiders will build their rushing offense around Darren McFadden.
After wasting a year trying to force McFadden into former OC Greg Knapp’s zone scheme, Allen has taken control now. “(McFadden’s) most effective years have been in a downhill, power scheme,” Allen said. “That’s why Greg Olson and Tony Sparano are here.” With Olson calling plays and Sparano coaching the line, McFadden won’t have any schematic excuses this year. Entering a contract year, there’s plenty of bounce-back appeal here.

I could see DMAC going off in his contract year.

So, scratch off or bubble sort down the RT’s in the draft? I hope not. Best case, Barnes is a depth signing.

  • xraided

they aren’t going to shop DMC in a contract year and when they don’t have any replacement on board. sorry i call BS

Gruden was on ESPN this morning and I know he likes everybody it seems, but he said he would “be shocked” if Geno isn’t taken in the top 5.

He also considers Ryan Nassib and Barkley “1st rd. talent”.

Don’t recall exactly how he worded it, but he also said teams that are picking in the top 7 need to look at their QB position cuz it’s a factor as to why they are picking that high.

Do we take that as a shot at Palmer? I don’t know. I guess.

If you’re a Gruden conspirator then the plan would be Raiders getting him his young QB for 2014…and the way Gruden sounds, it doesn’t matter who it is cuz he seems to love all of them.

Coach Allen’s long-haul approach must not have included Knapp, the ST coach and the o-line coach huh?

Thank god for that, but it just shows Allen has a lot to learn and is just hoping to scrape bye for another couple of years by promising that there is light at the end of a very long tunnel.

Just get your job done and do not allow record setting defeats again this season!

wow, this is news if accurate. RM went out of his way telling everyone that McFadden was a player to build around and had great faith in him.

…no I’m not saying Gruden is coming to Oakland in 2014 but I do enjoy the intrigue.

    Bill Williamson, espn:

Oakland general manager Reggie McKenzie has been quoted as saying he would like to pursue a long-term deal for McFadden this summer. So, the team clearly likes McFadden.

Coach Dennis Allen said this week that the fact that McFadden is going back to a system in which he excelled in will help him.

“(McFadden’s) most effective years have been in a downhill, power scheme,” Allen said this week at the NFL owners meetings “That’s why Greg Olson and Tony Sparano are here.”

Yeah. I saw his interview with Florio at the Combine where he said he was counting on DMAC to have a great season.

You hear so many rumors and when they don’t come to fruition it’d be nice if the ones who started it had to answer for their b.s.

Why didn’t they just ask us? Would have saved them an entire wasted year.

I respect Gruden’s skills as a coach, but look at his track history with developing QB’s and he really doesn’t have any success other than Gannon. His overall drafting skills are piss poor, both him and Bruce Allen ran Tampa into a ditch with their drafts.

So couple that with his record of “loving everyone” and I take Gruden’s comments with a boulder size grain of salt.

  • Marks hair

Did antbody see that guy get the competition committee to inadvertently admit that the snow job was and always will be a fumble? Good stuff. But of course Everyone in the room realized the gaff and they all just laughed at the Raiders loss…

Everybodys impressed with geno. Top 3 pick.

Haven’t been around lately, don’t know if it has been mentioned but we should take a look at a couple FA WR’s:

Julian Edelman: in NE was groomed to replace Welker in the slot before they signed Amendola, I’ve watched him play a few times and think he’s a play-maker, could be our Slot and help on returns.

Ramses Barden: 6’6 224, obviously red-zone potential but could turn out to be more than that with regular playing time.

Both will be 27 and should come cheap, give them short-term deals, see if they can turn into contributors.

Moore, Streater, Ford and Criner need some competition.

  • guest123

MIKE, you grandmother’s grandma is better than Willie Smith.

Barnes missed Weeks 3-9 last year due to groin surgery. But he’s started at right tackle in his last 25 games for the Raiders, grading out 64th among 80 qualifiers according to ProFootballFocus. Barnes was a particularly poor run-blocker in the squashed zone-blocking scheme. Mar 20 – 11:08 AM
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

64th and that’s the best we can do in FA?

  • guest123

    Good list Marley,

Since we are talking available free agent WR’s, I’ll add another (don’t know if he was signed overnight)

Laurent Robinson, had a big season for Dallas and cashed in over in JAX, but no QB there so I give him a pass. Could be had for cheap.

  • http://profootballtalk.com Raideraholic (AKAHairyBush)

You know, I was truly concerned this season was going to be a write off. BUT… I quickly came to my senses when I realised we had Jamize Olawale and Micky Shuler on the roster.

Phew, Our problems are solved. Go Raiders!

  • guest123

I like Barden a lot. He seems to glide effortlessly on his routes and has good hands. Trouble staying healthy though and he may be another glass schalens.

I don’t like Edelman as much. Fragile slot guy who will get blown up early and often. You know I love Carson, but he’s no Brady. This wouldn’t end well for Edelman.

  • http://profootballtalk.com Raideraholic (AKAHairyBush)

Endleman would be a great signing!
I live in NE and watch the Pats more often than I want. Julian would be a great addtion to our wideouts!

  • guest123

We already have enough smurf wideouts. We need a big guy to replace DHB, who should be signing with the Jest soon.

  • Marks hair

Yeah I’ve been asking for barden but reggies not calling.

  • Daviseraalumni

Raiders are ranked #32 in NFL.com’s offseason power rankings. Not really a big believer in those kind of things, but it is troubling to see.

  • xraided

yea it looks as if we won’t get our chance to even trade out of our spot with a stuier for Geno

good news is one of the OL will fall to us.

thing is if Fisher falls to us, do we really pick a RT 3rd overall? seems silly when good FA RT’s are out there.

  • xraided

still saying DT or DE @ #3 …

I agree we need a big wide out but I still think Endelman would be a good addtion.

I don’t know if we can depend on Ford or Moore. They both have big play ability but they have to learn to be more consistent for my liking.

  • Marks hair

If fishers there we can trade him. He’s a Lt.
