UPDATE: Lechler to visit Texans

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, March 20th, 2013 at 3:22 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Punter Shane Lechler, whose average of 45.7 yards per punt is the highest in NFL history, will visit the Houston Texans Thursday, the Houston Chronicle reported.

The seven-time Pro Bowler was a high school star as a quarterback and punter and played in college at Texas A&M.

If Lechler leaves, he would be the sixth of 17 unrestricted free agents to find work elsewhere, joining Philip Wheeler (Dolphins), Desmond Bryant (Browns), Brandon Myers (Giants), Mike Goodson (Jets) and Matt Shaughnessy (Cardinals).

UPDATE: Safety Mike Mitchell thanked the Raiders and Al Davis for his time in Oakland and in a tweet said he looked forward to his opportunity with the Carolina Panthers. That makes seven.

Lechler, 36, had a 39.0 net punting average in 2012, his lowest since 2006, after having pre-training camp surgery on his plant leg. The Raiders, anticipating the possibility of losing Lechler to free agency, kept rookie punter Marquette King in the organization on injured reserve last season.

Houston was the odds-on favorite to land Lechler when he was scheduled for free agency in 2008. However, Al Davis stepped up and signed Lechler to a four-year contract worth $16 million _ the most ever paid to a punter.

Anybody that thinks that the QB is solely responsible for a W or a L in the NFL is completely ignorant to the NFL.

There are so many other variables in the mix from game planning to play calling to execution by 22 players on the field at the same time to arbitrary rules used to call the game by refs.

So you take Art Shells B&B team and insert (your wet dream QB) and you think that the QB is going to have a winning record that season? because he’s a winner and Andrew Walter was a looser?

Thanks Mistic but I wasn’t trying to be cozy or caring. Although they are some of my finer attributes and it’s very astute of you to notice.

My point is pitchers have more control over the outcome of games than QB’s do which is why wins and losses are an actual, real stat they use in the sport.

I don’t argue your point that wins and losses are something everyone looks to for QB’s. We do it, analysts do it and you do have to get the W’s or else…trouble ensues. No doubt.

    Missdick the liar strikes again.

He just said newton outperformed Palmer in just about every way.

    Newton #15. 86.2 rating
    Palmer #16. 85.3 rating

Palmer had more yards and Tds in only 14 games.

    ============

    yawn

cam scored more tds had fewer turn overs than and more wins palmer

    lol this isnt even debatable

    that was too easy

Guess Reggie sucks cuz he let the one dimensional Mitchell go to Carolina. Cuz they have a great success turning around Raider castoffs ;P.

    ———————————

Yes, indeed. Mitchell is a very good, very passionate player. Better than Branch, IMO. What does Reggie do? Lets Mitchell walk for a fraction of the out of whack contract he gave Branch last year.

In (4-12) Reggie we trust. Right?

Your not serious right. Mitchell was horrible in coverage. Kinda important for a Safety. We can’t have him blitz every time he touches the field because then it becomes predictable. He wasn’t needed and was a horrible draft choice for his position.

    The end.

Lot’s of well regulated, polite sites out there. No sites like this one. Almost totally unregulated other than KookyKell whining to Becker or Corkster. And Cork said he ignores him most all the time.

With MM34 leaving, we are instantly a better team. He was horrible. Did nothing well and was often out of position to even try to make a play

Pryor will be just fine as the starting Raiders QB this season. If not Raiders draft a QB in 2014.

I wonder how much we’ll be under the salary cap when Lechler leaves. ?

  • angry little man

On Palmer, he had a great season at least statistically speaking, even tho he had no running game. If this team had a running game like it did in 2011 we would have gone at least 8-8.

  • AlzWalker

You know Marquette King is one hell of an athlete, he opens the door to alot of options on punts.

  • joemostler

I love lechler but this proves that he is just another raider that isn’t really a raider at heart. Very sad.
