UPDATE: Lechler to visit Texans

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, March 20th, 2013 at 3:22 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Punter Shane Lechler, whose average of 45.7 yards per punt is the highest in NFL history, will visit the Houston Texans Thursday, the Houston Chronicle reported.

The seven-time Pro Bowler was a high school star as a quarterback and punter and played in college at Texas A&M.

If Lechler leaves, he would be the sixth of 17 unrestricted free agents to find work elsewhere, joining Philip Wheeler (Dolphins), Desmond Bryant (Browns), Brandon Myers (Giants), Mike Goodson (Jets) and Matt Shaughnessy (Cardinals).

UPDATE: Safety Mike Mitchell thanked the Raiders and Al Davis for his time in Oakland and in a tweet said he looked forward to his opportunity with the Carolina Panthers. That makes seven.

Lechler, 36, had a 39.0 net punting average in 2012, his lowest since 2006, after having pre-training camp surgery on his plant leg. The Raiders, anticipating the possibility of losing Lechler to free agency, kept rookie punter Marquette King in the organization on injured reserve last season.

Houston was the odds-on favorite to land Lechler when he was scheduled for free agency in 2008. However, Al Davis stepped up and signed Lechler to a four-year contract worth $16 million _ the most ever paid to a punter.

It’s a “long standing practice” to count wins and losses as a qb stat? Really? By who? Stupid fans like urself? Yep. But not the nfl. It’s a long standing practice for stupid people to connect the wrong things all the time. That’s what stupid people do.

“The dog farted. The wind blew. Therefore dog farts make the wind blow.”

It has some truth to it. The wind right around the dog’s but did blow. But it would exactly be science would it?

  • xraided

    mystic,

i’ve said the same arguments regarding palmer. the win losses aren’t all the QB. yes a 4 game improvement… but you can argue that those reasons you listed is why they weren’t a .500 team or better… its just all on Newton

yes he’s better than Palmer. can’t argue that really

i’m just saying, you say ‘excuses or fact’ … those same things can be said about the team around Palmer.

and hitch that with the fact that Palmer had a HORRIBLE playcaller that’s out of the league(as he should have been years ago) … you can make arguements either way

we will see this year what Pryor and Palmer have. we can argue it up and down, but i dont think Carson has had a fair shake since he’s been here… that’s my opinion.

If things don’t go well, just implicitly blame it on Al Davis.
    ———-

Actually, you can technically blame a corpes for your own laziness for up to 3 years. I’ve been doing that for the guy i took over at work.

    ————————

    LOL.

Reminds me of this quote from the movie “Traffic”:

You know, when they forced Khruschev out, he sat down and wrote two letters to his successor. He said – “When you get yourself into a situation you can’t get out of, open the first letter, and you’ll be safe. When you get yourself into another situation you can’t get out of, open the second letter”. Well, soon enough, this guy found himself into a tight place, so he opened the first letter. Which said – “Blame everything on me”. So he blames the old man, it worked like a charm. He got himself into a second situation he couldn’t get out of, he opened the second letter. It said – “Sit down, and write two letters”.

  • DutchRaider77

Look at Brandon Myers and Louis Murphy with the Giants now. Bet they have no “catching” issues with Eli

    ____________________________________________________

You know Louis Murphy was on Carolina last year?
Murphy didn’t really do anything in Carolina…so if he blows up in New York is that a shot against Newton? Interesting…

Murphy barely even played for the Raiders in 2011, he actually had a couple good games with Carson.

You also realize that Brandon Meyers was our leading receiver (pretty sad)?

the defnse was awful and newton got off to a slow start behind an o line on par with philly and chicago.

that is why they didnt win more games

they beat the saints and falcons last year so they can do it again
    —-
So do you think the team that just signed the great Mike Mitchell will turn their defense from awful to playoff-worthy in one year?
    ================

    i didnt say that

they will improve and they are already getting better

    cam is the driving force

he has improved the win total every year since his arrival and with a little help at o line and on defense he will be too much for that division

    simple logic
    —-
Simple logic is that our defense can’t get any worse because Bresnahan is gone. It’s not that simple. Gambling would be too easy for it to be simple logic. I agree that they are getting better, but Atlanta isn’t just chillin.

I’m pretty sure they won more games in a row last year than Carolina won all season.

What do you expect. Reggie is intent on getting “his own guys.” Just like firing Hue for Dennis Allen. It’s all about Reggie making sure he gets the credit if the Raiders do well, whether or not it’s what’s best for the team.

    #ego
    ——————————————
So Reggie is just like AL eh?

I don’t believe Reggie is into “Credit”

Reggie want’s to build a winning organization.

If he’s successful, I’m certain he will spread the accolades among the “Team”

    —————————-

I’m sure that’s what he’ll say. I think he’s more interested in what everyone else will say though. And he only gets the praise if the team is made up of “his guys” not Al’s guys. Did not go well at all last year, plummeting from 16-16 the prior two seasons to 4-12. Guess we’ll see if it’s any better this year.
    ——————————————————
I know these people exist, but do you really believe that Reggie is more concerned with “What everyone else will say”

His under the radar moves thus far are more indicative of His personality.

He could have easily spent big bucks and kicked the $$$ can down the road if he were interested in “what other people would say”.

    Think about it.

  • boss01

Palmer never had a team like PM, Brady, Rodgers or Brees had so the hopeful part in me says that he would excel with a playoff caliber team.

However, the reality is that he is not in any of those above mentioned QB’s. My thinking is if Alex Smith took the Whiners to the NFC championship game, then Palmer would be capable of the same thing.

Reality is though, that this team is light years away from the whiners depth and talent, so Palmer is therefore useless, he is incapable of putting a team on his back and carrying it to the playoffs.

That means, in order for him to fit in with this roster, he needs to take a dramatic pay cut, which Reggie is aware of and is already probably in talks with his agent already.

If takes the pay cut, he is more valuable than Pryor PERIOD.

And if he is released you’re definitely worse off at QB with Pryor, any draft pick including Geno, or any FA QB currently on the market.

The Pryor cult is just delirious if you all think he is ever going to pan out.

  • dr_robert

    Missdick the liar strikes again.

He just said newton outperformed Palmer in just about every way.

    Newton #15. 86.2 rating
    Palmer #16. 85.3 rating

Palmer had more yards and Tds in only 14 games.

    The dude is desperate.

It doesn’t add up. Stats are palmers favor.

Bad o-line and bad defense are newtons excuse. But not palmers. How does a liar like that look in the mirror?

When they attribute wins and losses on pitchers in baseball it makes more sense cuz he literally has total control of the outcome. IF a pitcher can strike out every single batter there is no way he can lose the game, but a QB has no control over how well a defense can stop the opposing team for instance and he can’t MAKE the receiver catch the ball either or ensure a rb doesn’t fumble.

I’m talking in extremes here but i’m sure u see the point.

There’s no playoffs this year. We need to cut Carson to complete the Rebuild and star Pryor and then next yea we can draft a QB, if we need to.

lol didnt i say this the part where you lose your mind trying to argue that it doesnt happen?

    lol cue the whining

yes dip shid that is why during the draft process college qbs have their won loss record touted or down played.

that is why some qbs get canned in the nfl even after posting big yardage stats palmer did last year.

that is why flacco signed a huge contract he won the super bowl and is in the playoffs every year.

it is the reason drew brees signed a huge contract, and brady and manning get paid like they do

it is the reason palmer will never get 28 mil from the raiders and the bengals sent him packing

    lol

cam is the biggest reason that they have improved, the offense was awful before he arrived

No foundation has been built yet and Palmer is still on the roster with the biggest “out of whack” contract in the NFL. So far it looks like a “duck tape” year. Looks like Reggie may be in “this team is a contender” mode instead of doing a FULL rebuild which is necessary. Depends on what they do with Palmer.

    ——————————————
Well I agree that He’s doing it His way, but the purging is selective.

I think that Wiz, Veldeer, Houston and others will get re upped.

It’s normal for this to happen whenever a change in management occurs.

You’re argument has been that status quo got us to 8-8.

What has never been acknowledged was that it was a house of cards.

    Salary cap is real.

The raiders had the highest payroll in the NFL or top 3.

    For that we got 8-8.

Then the financial collapse happens and then what.

Baltimore is a good current day example, except that their core is much stronger than anything we’ve seen here in the past 10 years.

  • dr_robert

People are talking about the college qb’s wins and losses? No analyst ever talks about that. In fact u just buried urself by bringing it up. Wins and losses are never talked about with and draft prospect. Oh wait. Only with talent-challenged guys like tebow and others when they want everyone to not pay attention to their abilities and only to how they’re a “winner”.

So stupid. Nobody drafts a qb on wins and losses. It’s about talent. Cuz they know if they put other talent around a good qb, they can win.

    Ur simply a moron.

Wins and losses NOT an official qb stat. The end. It’s fact. Only dummies like u who can’t tell what really makes a good qb.

QB’s ultimately get judged on playoff and SB victories. In a passing league now, that is what the deal is.

Bree’s, Brady, Rodgers, and now Flacco get paid cuz they win.

Carson Palmer is overrated, overpaid and is not the foundation for our future.

Makes no Sense to keep the guy especially as his salary stands.
