Raiders bring back Khalif Barnes

Right tackle Khalif Barnes became the first of 17 unrestricted free agents to return to the Raiders, the club announced Wednesday.

Since free agency began, five players _ Philip Wheeler (Dolphins), Desmond Bryant (Browns), Brandon Myers (Giants), Mike Goodson (Jets) and Matt Shaughnessy (Cardinals) have signed with other teams, while the rest remain on the market.

An eight-year veteran, Barnes started nine games at right tackle last season after recovering from a torn groin muscle. He was a 16-game starter in 2011.

Barnes is versatile enough to have played in the gap and power scheme blocking the Raiders utilized in 2011 as well as the zone system last season.

If we could trade Palmer to Arizona it might be a win-win for both teams. He’d fit great in an offense suited to him (Arians would make him look like a top 5-10QB). We’d get draft picks and so on and speed up the “reggie plan” to remake.

Cutler must figure he was already taking 15-20 good hits a game, might as well be on the edge running the option.

    +++++++++++++++

    Cutler’s read option: One step..pitch
    ——————
The read option is not the same as the regular ol’ pitch option. The way they will use it will be closer to a play action run/pass attack I’m guessing. Well, unless they are dumb. Running QBs just give the read option MORE options.

    Closure?

    Probably not.

Some wounds never heal. The events of Jan. 19, 2002, in snowy Foxborough, Mass., fall under that category in the Raider Nation. It was the inspiration for the tuck rule.

On Wednesday, more than 11 years later and in the heat of the Arizona desert, the NFL voted to make the tuck rule go away. Yes, for the Oakland Raiders it is 11 years too late. The team even tweeted as much last week when the rule change was proposed.

We all know the gory details. Late in the 2001 AFC divisional playoffs, New England quarterback Tom Brady appeared to fumble. But it was ruled a pass. Had Oakland been awarded the fumble, it would have would have gone to the AFC title game. Instead, the Patriots came back and won the game.

The sting is still felt in Oakland.

Now it is over. But so what? It doesn’t change history.

Meanwhile, I did find it interesting that New England owner Robert Kraft abstained from the vote.

His decision to abstain could be perceived to be a message to the Raiders. The late Al Davis was famous for abstaining from league votes. Had the legendary Davis still been alive, I’m sure he would have been the first owner in line to cast a ballot in this vote.

  • NGRaiderfan

SO i guess i was wrong about star running 40. he ran it at the last minute and ran a 5.1. wouldn’t put too much stock into it thoug, seeing at it had 3 guys from utah go under 4.3…that’s not accurate.
