Lechler terms _ 3 yrs, 5.5 mil, 1 mil bonus

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Shane Lechler’s contract with the Houston Texans as for three years, $5.5 million, with a $1 million signing bonus.

Considerably more than the Reggie McKenzie Raiders were willing to pay for a punter.

Lechler hasn’t surfaced of late in terms of returning phone calls, but it’s worth noting before he left he felt pretty good about the direction the franchise was headed in the post-Al Davis era. And Lechler hasn’t ever been shy about voicing his opinion when he wasn’t happy.

Lechler will rank as one of the truly great Al Davis draft picks, a guy who affected field position since his selection in 2000 at the cost of a fifth-round draft pick.

    Evening Raider fans and others.. I am still in the school of thought that we MUST trade down for more picks.

    I agree almost to the point of no matter how bad the deal. We need picks.
    What I hadn’t thought about was the fact that we have early picks in rounds 3,4,6 and 7 that might be traded back to mid round or so for an extra pick.
    Not near as sexy as what we might get for the #3 pick, but something to think about.

    My guess is Kelly and McClain will be cut after June 1 so the cap hit can be spread over 2013 and 2014.
    =======================================================

    McClain for sure barring a trade, the benefit of which isn’t the 7th round pick as much as it is negating his cap hit this year. Kelly, for all his faults doesn’t deserve that treatment.

    Thanks for all time at the Raiders Mr.Lechler. A great punter and special teams player. Good luck (but not if you are playing the Raiders!).
