Raiders turn sights toward cornerback

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie spent much of the first two weeks of free agency addressing the front seven on his team’s defense. Now, McKenzie has shifted his sights toward doing something about the dearth of talent at cornerback.
The Raiders reportedly are interested in veteran cornerbacks Mike Jenkins and Tracy Porter. Jenkins played for the Dallas Cowboys his first five NFL seasons. Porter spent last season with the Denver Broncos after spending his first four NFL seasons with the New Orleans Saints.
As of now, the Raiders are without a proven starting cornerback on their roster. Ron Bartell and Shawntae Spencer started at cornerback in the opener last season, but they now are free agents that aren’t likely being asked back by McKenzie.
Earlier this month, the Raiders checked into the prospect of signing veteran cornerback Terence Newman. As of last night, Newman said he still hasn’t decided whether to re-sign with the Cincinnati Bengals or go with the Raiders.
Regardless, it’s likely that the two players that start for the Raiders in the 2013 regular-season opener aren’t even on the roster right now. Signing Jenkins and/or Porter would change that right away.
This year’s draft features more than a handful of highly regarded cornerbacks, so McKenzie could find additional help through that avenue.
Some mock drafts project the Raiders taking Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner with the third pick of the first round. It says here, McKenzie either trades away the No. 3 pick for multiple draft picks or uses the selection on an offensive or defensive lineman.

    2. Anyone coming in – would be cashing a check, since all top Front office people are in
    3. no new stadium, no luxury boxes or revenue incoming to pay it.

It appears its Jon Gruden to save the day and giving him total control – he’d have a fan base, proven record (while he was here)

even then, its wishful thinking without a top evaluator. I’d settle for Greg Cosell and Mike Mayock at this point.

I’d very much like to trade with SF. Acquiring their first rounder, second rounder (thiers or KC’s) this can be negotiated. And also SF’s #1 pick next year.

Think about it. We are cap strapped and money strapped this year. What better way to go into next year swimming in cap space than with two #1 picks?

What’s gotten into you Guest? Youd’ve pitchforked any notions of prepping “Next Year” just last week. LOL…

I’m OK with the moves so far……I will wait and watch the draft…. I see it for what it is.

The only reason you take Geno at #3 is because he is a top 10 pick in THIS DRAFT.

If there were better options, he may not be a top 10 pick, but the reality is that he will be off the board by the time the 11th pick comes around.

You don’t think he’ll go for Milliner or a lineman with our 3rd?

I think the guy is looking for superior players at every position in this rebuild so he may well do that.

  • raiderinparadise

Palmer has leverage with Raiders, if they want to sniff any competitive season they need Palmer & Pryor together.

Reggie has pressure, Mark Davis was furious with last year and wants to have a competitive team.

You let Palmer go … as flashy as Pryor is, he would be a simple game plan for any defense and then oak would need to either draft or sign QB’s just fill the roster.

    Its a mess.
