Raiders release DT Kelly, free up considerable cap space

The Raiders released veteran defensive tackle Tommy Kelly on Wednesday, freeing up approximately $5 million in salary-cap room.
Kelly, 32, as the longest-tenured position player on the Raiders roster. Kicker Sebastian Janikowski is the only player on the Raiders who has been on the roster longer than the nine seasons Kelly spent.
Kelly was slated to earn $6.5 million in base salary this season and count almost $11.1 million against the salary cap. He also was scheduled to make $7 million in base salary in 2014.
Kelly is the fourth veteran player released by the Raiders this offseason, joining wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, free safety Michael Huff and defensive lineman Dave Tollefson.
The release of Kelly means the Raiders are without their top three defensive tackles from last season, along with Richard Seymour and Desmond Bryant.
In response, the Raiders signed veterans Vance Walker and Pat Sims. They also have second-year player Christo Bilukidi as a potential replacement.

No one ever said Palmer was elite, we said he was slightly above average.

Which is better than what we have had in here since Gannon.
    **************************

Ummm…..sorry but Palmer had no winning record as starter here…..someone else did since Gannon…..can ya guess who?

    —————————–

I can’t remember his name, but I know he just signed for the second straight year as a backup QB. He’s that guy who used to hand off to McFadden and Bush when they were tearing it up in Hue’s offense and then throw 150 yards worth of checkdown passes per game. Sorry, can’t remember his name anymore.

Yes, but not an early 1st where AZ is picking.

Maybe Reggie can pull that off, schlepp Carson on them, get the 2014 1st rounder, that will be even higher next year after Carson dogs his way through ANOTHER 4-12 season.

    What say you?

And the speculation is rampant in Alameda:

According to Yahoo’s Mike Silver, there is “much organizational skepticism” about Raiders third-year QB Terrelle Pryor.
Pryor is big and athletic, but doesn’t throw the football with velocity or accuracy — and that’s a big problem for NFL quarterbacks. In an in-depth Raiders column citing a variety of sources, Silver suggests the club may still keep Pryor around on an athletic quarterback depth chart that could potentially add free agent Vince Young and West Virginia’s Geno Smith to a three-way camp battle.

  • Priesttj12

Glad Priesttj and Chris in NY have joined in on the Bryant topic.

It WAS a shock to most if not all of us that Reggie didnt a) resign him during the season, b) tag him, or anyone for that matter, c) let him walk.

But then this blog went into a span of time where a lot of people were saying, “yeah Bryant was no loss, reggie is rebuilding the right way.” And people got over it.

But I brought it up today because sh!t is hitting the fan with Reggie’s 1 yr contracts, Palmer wanting out, possibility of more players wanting out, more word of worthwhile vets (even as depth back-ups) not even hearing from Reggie and just getting dumped, no talk, no negotiations.

Gutting in itself (and 1 yr contracts) doesn’t mean a direct step towards rebuilding, or a correct rebuilding.

When the Colts rebuilt (or bucs) they didnt entirely gut the 53 man roster. They did try and did succeed in retaining some key vets (even pretty old vets). The gel of a rebuild is to retain key vets and upcoming young’uns who are likely to hit FA and get a pay hike.
    *******************************************
GG, It’s not hard to see the why the people who support Reggie are the same people who hated Al Davis and made it clear they wanted him out at any cost. So anyone who even looks like he might be a vable alternative is attractive to them.

That much is apparent, my issue is this. We all knew Mr Davis was in hhis final days the change to another direction was imminent. No problem it brings a level of excitment to a degree. When Reggie ws hired I was all for it He seemed like he was returning home. With no ideas and a fresh way to look at things. So I’m Ok lets roll see what we got. Then he fires the coach I’m like why would you do that, he must have someone in mind. Turns out he had no one in mind. He hires DA(enuff said) then allows him to hire his staff OK I’m getting concerned. The they let go of Bush now my eyebrows are raised and I wnat to see results.

He goes into the seaosn with no apparent edge rusher we lose the opener in the most embarrassing way. I’m on high alert from there and it has gone downhill from there. What am I suppose dto do just ignore obvious gaffs? it is obvious to me Reggie is green as grass but arrogant. He thinks he can duplicate what happened in GB which is the lost ignorant of all. I know each situation is different and must be dealt with accordingly. What happened in GB can only happen if you have the same elements and circumstances. You are in a unigue situation can he assess it and go from there to enhance the situatio NOT say this is what we did in GB so that’s what I’ll do here……….it is very naive and it shows………….period

I see it this way ….. NOW, you have to trade Carson to free alllll that $$$. If you dump him, it will cost us the dead money and free up a small amount. Then again you still have Rolando McClain, whos contract is badly set-up, I think it would free up like 900,000 ….so if you can trade either, or both and they restructure with new team oakland would be rich overnight.

45-99 is 45-99 under six different coaching staffs.

Mr. Davis knew he had lost the ability to evaluate good college talent when he tried to get Sarkisian and then had to settle for Kiffin.

I do believe Buffalo is targeting a QB in the draft, however, I don’t believe it is Geno Smith.

Just read Silver’s take on the Palmer situation.
Keeping in mind that it’s coming from Silver, I’m moving toward Pryor under center this season. Not because he’s better than Palmer, because he’s all in with being our QB.
I was hoping we’d get another year out of Palmer but, in the end, it doesn’t matter at all. 2013 is going to suck regardless.
I’m hoping we bring in another QB for camp, plant Palmer at #3 on the depth chart, and cut him just before the season opens.
There’s no way on Earth anyone (besides Hue Jackson) will trade for him and his contract.
I had high hopes at one point. Turns out he’s just Jeff George v2.0

Lets get the kid into camp at #1 and let someone try to beat him out. If not, he’s the starter.

If you can find me anything that shows his salary becoming guaranteed before than, that would be awesome, but I can’t find it.

    ****************************

I can’t, but I always thought contracts became “Guaranteed” before the first week of the season.

Could be wrong. I know if a guy IS NOT on a roster, teams wait until week 2 to sign a player so they don’t have to guarantee his full season salary.

We have to be cap compliant the day or two after June 1st right? And thus any salaries on the book still count then.

Is there another date for salary cap figures to be compliant? What would happen to the 2013 cap numbers if we cut Carson the Friday before the first game of the season?

    Something is off here.

    ——————————————————

Theres no set date we have to cut Palmer, however if he gets injured in camp than we are on the hook for $13mil.

Another interesting fact about the post June 1st designation is, When you designate someone as a June 1 cut the player and his current contract remain on the books until June 1. I posted more on this yesterday in post 726, explains alot about the June 1st designation.

From that it looks like Huffs full contract is still counting against our cap until June 1st (No wonder the reports have us at less cap than what most think we should have) cutting him hasn’t helped us out at all yet but once June 1st comes we will spread his cap hit out over 2 years and should have plenty of cap to sign Rookies etc….

I didn’t know if people on here realized that using a June 1st designation doesn’t help us in anyway cap wise and to be able to sign free agents etc in March/April/May….but I guess it will come in handy June 1st for rookie contracts and getting under the cap once again
