Updated story on Raiders trading for Flynn, trading Palmer

By Steve Corkran
Friday, March 29th, 2013 at 12:59 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders are closing in on a trade for veteran quarterback Matt Flynn, according to a CBSSports.com report Friday.
In turn, the Raiders will trade incumbent starting quarterback Carson Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals, a subsequent report by the same website said.
Flynn, who turns 28 in late June, has started only two games in his five NFL seasons, both during his four years with the Green Bay Packers, when current Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie was with the Packers.
The Seattle Seahawks signed Flynn last offseason in hopes of him becoming their starting quarterback. That went by the wayside with the rapid ascension of Russell Wilson from a third-round draft pick to clear-cut No. 1 last offseason.
The report said the trade likely will be consummated “in short order,” though the Raiders say they won’t comment on the report.
Trading for Flynn almost certainly would end Palmer’s Raiders tenure, be it through release or trade.
Trading Palmer won’t be easy, given his prohibitive contract. It would become easier if Palmer agrees to restructure his contract in advance.
Flynn is scheduled to earn $5.25 million in base salary for 2013. Trading or releasing Palmer would compel the Raiders to absorb a $9.34 million hit against the salary cap, though they could push back all but $2.35 million of that figure into 2014 if they designate Palmer a post-June 1 cut.
Flynn, 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, burst onto the scene when he passed for 480 yards and six touchdowns in the Packers regular-season finale against the Detroit Lions on Jan. 1, 2012. He passed for 251 yards and three touchdowns in his only other start, in 2010 against the New England Patriots.
Last season, Flynn appeared in three games for the Seahawks. He completed 5 of 9 passes for 68 yards and no touchdowns in those games.
The Packers selected Flynn in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL draft, five rounds after they selected quarterback Brian Brohm. That same draft produced Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco.
Flynn has two years remaining on the three-year, $19.5 million contract — $10 million of it was guaranteed — he signed last offseason.

Palmer has leverage now that Flynn deal has gone through.

If he refuses to take a cut then he can force Raiders to cut him and he can sign anywhere.

This move gives Pryor a better shot to start, Dumbells.

Just like Wilson in Seattle. It’s better to have a backup at 6 mil than 13 mil.

It also tells me that DEE MILNER is the pick at #3. To h*ll with trading down.

When Dolphins passed on Flynn, writing was on wall for quarterback’s worth
When the Dolphins decided to pass on Matt Flynn last offseason, it provided one of our most candid glimpses into his perceived worth. After all, Miami’s coach, Joe Philbin, had as much knowledge of Flynn’s game as anyone from their time together in Green Bay. And Philbin, desperately needing a quarterback, suggested the team not pay Flynn more than $4 million per year.

  • Kirk

Matt Flynn is heading to the Oakland Raiders from the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for two draft picks, sources told NFL.com’s Albert Breer. Flynn will sign papers to finalize the deal on Monday morning. The Seahawks receive a late-round draft selection in 2014 and a conditional 2015 pick. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport and Breer reported Friday that trade compensation was finalized and a deal was close.

Fox Sports insider and NFL Network contributor Jay Glazer first reported the trade.

Glazer reported the Raiders are trying to finalize a deal with the Arizona Cardinals to send Carson Palmer to the Cardinals for a late-round draft pick. No matter where Palmer lands, his brief career with the Raiders is over.

  • Al_is_theraiders

couldnt beat out russell couldnt beat out wilson…lol and this is your man? gtfoh…

  • Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

Flynn’s inexperience, Oakland’s lack of firepower … not a winning combination
I don’t believe the Raiders’ acquisition of Matt Flynn significantly impacts the franchise. Although he’ll be entering his sixth pro season, Flynn is essentially a rookie starter with a grand total of two NFL starts under his belt (one in 2010 and one in 2011). Another concern: Flynn will be taking over an offense with limited firepower in the passing game. The Raiders are slated to start Denarius Moore and Jacoby Ford at wide receiver and Richard Gordon at tight end. While Moore has flashed potential, this group is anything but established. Case in point: Gordon has three catches in two NFL seasons.

Yes, Flynn looked great in his two aforementioned career starts, piling up 731 passing yards and nine touchdowns against just two interceptions. But think about the weapons he had at his disposal in Green Bay: Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, Jermichael Finley, James Jones and Donald Driver. The Packers’ receiving corps put fear in the hearts of defenders, possessing the explosive skills to mask Flynn’s deficiencies as a player. This helped the Packers’ offense produce at an exceptional level, even with all-world signal-caller Aaron Rodgers on the sideline.

I’m certainly not suggesting Flynn is a bad player and is destined to flop as a starter in Oakland. I just believe the talented supporting cast around him in Green Bay was vital to his success. Without similar support on the Raiders, he could become another disappointing starter for a team in desperate need of a franchise quarterback. Buck Brooks NFL.com

Flynn is no franchise savior in Oakland; he’s just a guy
It doesn’t mean much. Flynn was barely due backup quarterback money from Seattle, and the Raiders asked Flynn to take a pay cut. That shows you how they see Flynn.

He’s a guy who will compete for snaps with Terrelle Pryor, but the Raiders certainly don’t see Flynn as a difference maker. And they absolutely don’t see him as a franchise quarterback. He’s just another guy — though a lot cheaper than the last guy. Greg Rosethal NFL.COM

    ***

this was to be expected. Palmer wants to control his own future. He can balk at whatever the Cards offer for him, making any trade from Oakland null & void

in essence, forcing us to just release him. the Cards probably don’t want to get into a bidding war for his services though if he becomes a free agent.

Palmer wants to weigh his options, talk things over with his family and if he doesn’t get an offer he likes … will just retire (again)

    Deal done.

“Raiders acquired QB Matt Flynn from the Seahawks in exchange for two draft picks.
The Raiders are surrendering a “late” pick in both 2014 and 2015. Per FOX’s Jay Glazer, the Raiders are “trying to finalize” trading Carson Palmer to the Cardinals for a “late pick” in a corresponding move. It’s an absurd price for a team that has no chance of competing in 2013, and is bereft of premium picks in this month’s draft. Just four of Oakland’s seven selections are before the 205th pick. The Raiders can ill-afford to flip future selections. Flynn may well prove competent, and is half the price of Palmer, but his “track record” consists of lighting up a Lions team that had already clinched a playoff spot in Week 17 2011. The Raiders are going to need Flynn to vastly exceed expectations for the move to be worth it. GM Reggie McKenzie’s vision has proven muddled his second year on the job.”

IMO, this is the worst possible news for Pryor.

They aren’t going to give up draft picks and pay Flynn close to $6 million to sit on the bench and backup.
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Flynn will get a chance to start due to his salary, but I don’t think this qualifies as bad news for TP.
It’s much easier to bench a $6 million QB over a $13 million QB.

  • nycraider

    Palmer + Pryor + 2 draft picks is > Flynn + pryor

    “build through the draft”
    “its a rebuild”

Reggie what are you doing, you are paying more for a QB with 2 starts versus a qb who threw for 4000 yards last year

  • RaiderSam

SI’s Peter King believes it’s “inevitable” that Carson Palmer ends up with the Cardinals.
The choking smoke should soon turn to fire despite noise about Palmer willing to be a backup for a winning team. King expects the Cardinals to surrender a fourth- or fifth-round pick, and for the sides to agree to an extension “commensurate” with Palmer’s recent performance. Palmer’s nonexistent mobility makes him a dubious fit behind Arizona’s in-progress offensive line, but he can still throw the ball downfield and is a better option than Drew Stanton.

Wikipedia has Flynn listed as a NFl quarterback with the Oakland Raiders. That makes it official.
If Reggie can pull off a trade with Arizona for Palmer, he will have earned his salary.

it was either 13 mil for a QB that is on his last legs
or 6 mil for a QB that he knew at GB, and he could compete with Pryor (how odd would it be for Pryor to pull a Russell wilson and send him to the bench again?)

a 7 mil difference, clear some space, then get a pick in a deal with AZ (guessing 8 picks are better than 7)
