Flynn going to compete for starting job

The Raiders acquired quarterback Matt Flynn from the Seattle Seahawks on Monday in exchange for two future draft picks.
The arrival of Flynn is coupled with the expected trade of Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals for a late-round draft pick.
The Raiders dealt a 2014 fifth-round pick and an unconditional draft pick in 2015 to the Seahawks for Flynn. It’s likely that the Raiders will recoup a late-round pick for trading Palmer.
Palmer was the unquestioned starter last season. Flynn isn’t being handed the job, general manager Reggie McKenzie said.
“Matt is a tough football player, and a talented quarterback,” McKenzie said in a press release. “He will get the opportunity to compete to be a starter with the Raiders. I believe Matt has that potential, but I also know he hasn’t had enough experience.”
Flynn has started only two games in his five NFL seasons. He spent his first four seasons backing up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. Last season, he appeared in only three games for the Seahawks after being beaten out by rookie Russell Wilson.
McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen said they want competition at every position. Therefore, Flynn is going to compete against second-year player Terrelle Pryor for the starting job. Pryor started one game in his first two NFL seasons.
Trading for Flynn and moving on from Palmer has just as much to do with money as it does anything. Palmer is slated to earn $13 million in base salary this season. Flynn carries a $5.25 million price tag for this season.
The Raiders save approximately $6 million by jettisoning Palmer, though Palmer counts $9.34 million against the cap because of the unaccounted for prorated portion of his 2012 signing bonus.
Flynn, 27, gives general manager Reggie McKenzie a quarterback of his choosing and one that he is familiar with from the four years he spent with Flynn in Green Bay as members of the Packers from 2008-11.
McKenzie inherited Palmer and Pryor from the previous regime that was led by head coach Hue Jackson.
Jackson engineered a midseason trade for Palmer in 2011 that cost the Raiders a first-round pick last year and a second-rounder in this year’s draft. The Raiders won only eight of the 24 games that Palmer started.
Flynn is six years younger than Palmer, far less expensive and someone eager to show that he is talented enough to be a full-time starter in the NFL.

Now we can maybe actually sign someone like Jenkins or Porter (especially if Flynn restructured and extended). Maybe even Abrahams too or MyQill at Safety.

I read in one of the Arizona papers were gonna swap late round picks with Zona an pick up an additional pick on day three?? Anybody else hear otherwise?? Buh Bye Carson!! Bring on the competition between TP6 an Flynn Mob. 5th rd pick in 2014 isn’t bad an if he doesn’t start I’m sure the 2015 pick will be a 6th or 7th

    ——————————————————–

If he doesn’t start Im sure we won’t even owe them a pick in 2015, its probably a conditional 7th rd pick based on if he starts or plays in so many games

I keep saying this we are restructuring McFadden before camp – mark it down. Building whole offense around him. When he extends and restructures we will probably get another 3-4 million in cap relief this year.

    ++++++++++++

If Reggie can lock up McFadden to an extension and drop his cap number, and then pick up some of the decent free agents still left on the market, then I will give him another season before I castigate him.

Right now, things do not look improved very much. Still no RT, no S, no CBs, no #1 WR, no TE, no return man……

    ^^^^^^^^^^

Can’t build around DMAC though. That Liz franc is a mutha and she don’t play. He’s fools gold. Need to deal him to highest bidder like the Jets are doing with Revis into his contract year.

  • BabySlash

No real cap savings ??!?!? Why give up picks for a guy who is worse than Palmer then? Flynn will be lucky to beat out Pryor…. Was a good trade until I realized it’s a wash cap wise

That is exactly why he is doing all this stuff to get money and extra draft pic to go after all this stuff. Do not see a #1 Receiver next year though unless we trade down from #3. I think they think Ausberry and Gordon ok at TE. Bet we see 7th rounder or UDFAs there.

    WIND,

I’ll believe it when I see it. I think given McKenzie’s frugal track record, he won’t overpay and those names will fly off the board and we’ll be stuck holding our d!cks again.

we saw this through his collge career. we saw this lat pre season as he posted the best passing numbers of all 3 of our qbs, and was unstoppable in the detroit game.

we saw this in week 17 when he posted 3 tds after 1/2 a week of split reps blowing away leinart in head to head comp.

As I have been saying to those that will listen, a lack of player talent was the biggest problem the Raiders have had over the last ten years.
Coaching was immaterial given the player talent problems we had.
    This recent purge validates that.

We have been 49-111 the last ten years UNDER SEVEN DIFFERENT COACHING STAFFS/SYSTEMS.

For the Raiders to have even been near the cap limit for the last ten years is pathetic.

We have had really bad players for a decade. Just because we overpaid them did not mean they were any good.

Reggie has done what I said he would do with Bey and Kelly prior to their departures:

Take a pay cut to a salary that is more representative of your play in 2012 or you will not play for the Raiders in 2013.

Assuming the Palmer deal happens we net out a wash in cap space (due to the $9 million dead money cap hit we will take with a Palmer trade or cut) and probably a wash in draft picks and will start a QB THIS YEAR that is not as good as Palmer.
It is a gamble that Flynn/TP are real NFL QB’s in 2014.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Rarely if ever should you trade your first and/or second round picks for an aging veteran.
    (See Palmer and Seymour).

By my unofficial count we would be at $41 million in dead money with a Palmer trade with another potential $7 million when MccLAIN is cut/traded.
Both I believe are NFL reacords.
    ———————————-
Al and Hue both panicked and left Reggie with few cards. He’s done pretty well with what he has to work with.

Moral of the story is an old one. Spend your money with a level head.

Well we gotta get at least one veteran CB in my opinion. Reg is obviously planning on drafting one at some point. Still think some of the teams that are signing veteran QB’s (Browns,Bills) are still gonna want Genooo which is perfect in our trade down scenario. Need to put a line in front of whoever our QB is an hopefully Big Reg is thinking the same. Warmack,Long,Veldheer,Wiz II and…. Still got plenty of picks for that pass rusher,cb,dt etc. Bruiser RB in the late rd. This year may not be too bad for the NATION

Hue sucked and made excuses all the time!!! He was the one that chose Boller as BU QB and he did not even talk to your man Pryor all year (according to Pryor). If he had a competent backup, the trade would have been uncessary and the BU at least in the short term would have peformed better than a guy no matter how good coming off the coach midseason!

I wish Carson Palmer well, wherever he goes.

He came in under Hue, under awful conditions. He studies the playbook 24/7 for the team and for two years took shots because of our o-line miseries. He hung in there until it cost him broken ribs and he’s lucky his lungs weren’t punctured in the process. He restructured his salary for the sake of the team and I think he knows we’re going for defense in the draft.

He’s a class act. I’ll root for him.
