Flynn going to compete for starting job

By Steve Corkran
Monday, April 1st, 2013 at 11:24 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders acquired quarterback Matt Flynn from the Seattle Seahawks on Monday in exchange for two future draft picks.
The arrival of Flynn is coupled with the expected trade of Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals for a late-round draft pick.
The Raiders dealt a 2014 fifth-round pick and an unconditional draft pick in 2015 to the Seahawks for Flynn. It’s likely that the Raiders will recoup a late-round pick for trading Palmer.
Palmer was the unquestioned starter last season. Flynn isn’t being handed the job, general manager Reggie McKenzie said.
“Matt is a tough football player, and a talented quarterback,” McKenzie said in a press release. “He will get the opportunity to compete to be a starter with the Raiders. I believe Matt has that potential, but I also know he hasn’t had enough experience.”
Flynn has started only two games in his five NFL seasons. He spent his first four seasons backing up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. Last season, he appeared in only three games for the Seahawks after being beaten out by rookie Russell Wilson.
McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen said they want competition at every position. Therefore, Flynn is going to compete against second-year player Terrelle Pryor for the starting job. Pryor started one game in his first two NFL seasons.
Trading for Flynn and moving on from Palmer has just as much to do with money as it does anything. Palmer is slated to earn $13 million in base salary this season. Flynn carries a $5.25 million price tag for this season.
The Raiders save approximately $6 million by jettisoning Palmer, though Palmer counts $9.34 million against the cap because of the unaccounted for prorated portion of his 2012 signing bonus.
Flynn, 27, gives general manager Reggie McKenzie a quarterback of his choosing and one that he is familiar with from the four years he spent with Flynn in Green Bay as members of the Packers from 2008-11.
McKenzie inherited Palmer and Pryor from the previous regime that was led by head coach Hue Jackson.
Jackson engineered a midseason trade for Palmer in 2011 that cost the Raiders a first-round pick last year and a second-rounder in this year’s draft. The Raiders won only eight of the 24 games that Palmer started.
Flynn is six years younger than Palmer, far less expensive and someone eager to show that he is talented enough to be a full-time starter in the NFL.

especially the ones where it hits the dirt 5 yards in front of the receiver.

they’ve seen it before. they know it well.

Unless we can get one of Adrian Peterson’s feet in a trade for DMC’s foot it’s time to think about trading DMC. Ford is also injury prone. Moore is to small and Ford is injury prone also so let’s trade one of them also.

Well we gotta get at least one veteran CB in my opinion. Reg is obviously planning on drafting one at some point. Still think some of the teams that are signing veteran QB’s (Browns,Bills) are still gonna want Genooo which is perfect in our trade down scenario. Need to put a line in front of whoever our QB is an hopefully Big Reg is thinking the same. Warmack,Long,Veldheer,Wiz II and…. Still got plenty of picks for that pass rusher,cb,dt etc. Bruiser RB in the late rd. This year may not be too bad for the NATION
    *******************************
Watch for a release from Clevland or Zona for competition for Pryor as the 2nd stringer. Of course unless Pryor kills it this offseason which is possible if not likely.

“I’ve known Matt Flynn since 2007 and scouted him before and after he entered the NFL. Matt is a tough football player, and a talented quarterback. He will get the opportunity to compete to be a starter with the Raiders. I believe Matt has that potential, but I also know he hasn’t had enough experience. We’re going to let him compete and battle, and see what happens. We know Raider Nation wants a team that can compete for the playoffs year-in and year-out and we’re putting in the necessary work right now to make that happen. This is one of the many decisions in that process.”

Flynn is the odds on favorite to start. No doubt.

But Pryor has a legitimate shot to compete for the starting job.

    It’s on him now.

he doesnt push the ball down field and buckles under the pass rush. Good between the twenties but doesnt make explosive lays, the quintessential game manager

After watching the Raiders downgraded his qb position Roger Goodell made this anouncement and quote.
“I have awarded these Raiders of the neverland with 2 additional first rounders, we want them to know we’ re not competing to be the cheapest football team but to be the best”
He also said that already talked with owner Mark Davis to stop his GM to keep trading future picks to below average players after hearing he was ready to make a move for Broncos RB knowshow Moreno.

He came in under Hue, under awful conditions. He studies the playbook 24/7 for the team and for two years took shots because of our o-line miseries. He hung in there until it cost him broken ribs and he’s lucky his lungs weren’t punctured in the process. He restructured his salary for the sake of the team and I think he knows we’re going for defense in the draft.

He’s a class act. I’ll root for him.

We could use like 20 draft picks in this draft, we got so many holes.

And your starting QB is now a full blown battle of 2 unprovens and never weres.

Our one offensive free agent signing was for a 30 yr old OT that hasn’t played any meaningful ball since ’09.
