Raiders used seven draft picks on QBs since 2006

The Raiders have looked far and wide for a long-term solution at quarterback since Rich Gannon retired after the 2004 season. Here is a glance at seven draft picks used on quarterbacks since 2006:

2007 – The Raiders selected JaMarcus Russell with the No. 1 pick of the 2007 NFL draft. He was released after only three seasons and posted a 7-18 record as a starter.

2010 – The Raiders traded a 2012 fourth-round draft pick to the Washington Redskins for Jason Campbell. He enjoyed moderate success in his two seasons.

2011 – The Raiders used a 2012 third-round draft pick so that they could select Terrelle Pryor in the third round of the NFL supplemental draft. He has started one game so far.

2011 – The Raiders traded a 2012 first-round draft pick and a 2013 second-rounder to the Cincinnati Bengals for Carson Palmer. He posted an 8-16 record as the starter.

2013 – The Raiders traded a 2014 fifth-round draft pick and a 2015 conditional draft pick to the Seattle Seahawks for Matt Flynn, who has made only two starts in his five-year NFL career.

And then the Bungles hire the guy. What a joke. Of course they hired him, he just handed them two premium drfat picks for a player they didn’t want anymore. I’m surprised they didn’t make him the new GM.

Honestly, I think the league should’ve stepped in. That’s kind of a conflict of interest isn’t it??

Getting hired by the team you just hooked up?

Good riddance to Hue and Carson. Prob fondling eachother’s beanbags right now

And those you don’t question the flynn move, you are the one’s who are clueless.

We are paying starter money to a backup. Thats what Flynn is, a backup. But because we don’t have any other option he will be the starter. If he’s not and Pryor beats him out, then Reggie is a f’ing idiot because we didn’t save sh*t in the salary cap by grabbing this guy.
    ———————

maybe not this year, but next year we’re free and clear. If they’d have kept palmer we’d be dealing with this debacle again next year and even more dead money would be flushed down the crapper.

    ——-
He’s still going to cost us 7.5M next year. So we save less than 5% next year with this move, with the most important position on the field. Also, he’s not even the clear starter.

Can’t wait for the Reggie excuses next year.

    ————————–

Who’s going to cost us 7 mil? Flynn?

So what, if it were Palmer that number would be doubled.

    ———
Why doesn’t Reggie negotiate with our own players effectively. A number of players have now left us for less money (Bush, Campbell, Palmer etc). Reggie’s job is to keep the players he has and convince them to take less. Players should NEVER leave for less money. He either lets them walk, or can’t sell what he is trying to do. Either way he’s failed.

Palmer left for 8M, it’s Reggies job to convince him to take that.

    ————————

You’re right. In a perfect world you don’t want to see guys leave for less money. But when you’re operating in the deficit, it’s impossible to hold on to everyone you’d like to.

And Bush and Campbell have not been productive in their new homes.

    ———–
And yet are used as excuses for going 4-12 after an 8-8 season.

    nah

  • Cervantes

Exactly 793 if Flynn doesn’t come to play there could be no pay after this year…

Reggie is loading up for next year to be the 1st year with little to no dead money, full cap flexibility, all his draft picks (After the Carson Trade) and some extras with compensation for FAs leaving this year.

Thus far, excellent management of the organization. Now all he needs is a 3rd or 4th rounder from AZ or multiple picks and we’re all good.

Raiders give Flynn considerably more guaranteed money
Posted by Mike Florio on April 1, 2013, 8:20 PM EDT
Green Bay Packers quarterback Flynn hands off the ball against the Detroit Lions during the second half of their NFL football game in Green Bay Reuters

If any of the teams in the top 10 are acquiring veteran quarterbacks to mask their interest in Geno Smith, the Raiders likely aren’t one of them.

Unless the Raiders are really committed to the smokescreen.

Per a source with knowledge of the transaction, the Raiders have adjusted Matt Flynn’s contract to increase his guaranteed money from $2 million in 2013 to $6.5 million. All $6.5 million is fully guaranteed.

To get there, the Raiders increased Flynn’s base salary from $5.25 million in 2013 and decreased his 2014 base salary by $1.25 million, from $6.25 million down to $5 million. Making the entire 2013 compensation fully guaranteed means that Flynn definitely will have a roster spot with the Raiders for the coming season.

Also, the available escalators and incentives were increased by $200,000, with a maximum value now at $26.4 million over three years. Flynn already received $8 million from the Seahawks in 2012.

Name one NFL franchise who was completely gutted a team and built a winner. Not rebuild, but gutted, because thats all we are doing.

Its funny any time someone disagrees people always say “become a Niner fan” how about we actually want our team to win.

Same stuff was said when people brought up Chucky B being a horrible mistake as well as Knapp. Sometimes common sense tells you its not going to work.

Yeah, Mike Brown really wanted to get rid of Palmer. That’s why he had a press conference ripping on Palmer for not keeping his end of the contract and refused to let trade him to another team; even when it was obvious the situation wasn’t working out.

In hindsight? Sure. They are happy they have disturbingly freak faced looking Andy Dalton; who looks the bastard love child of Howdy Doody and Satan.

The same situation can play out for us that did for Seattle, in the sense that Pryor shows up and just tears it up during training camp and pre season and becomes the starter. Motivation for both, don’t you think? Like I said before, FlynnStone doesn’t want to be embarrassed again. I wish them both well!
