Raiders used seven draft picks on QBs since 2006

By Steve Corkran
Monday, April 1st, 2013 at 12:20 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders have looked far and wide for a long-term solution at quarterback since Rich Gannon retired after the 2004 season. Here is a glance at seven draft picks used on quarterbacks since 2006:

2007 – The Raiders selected JaMarcus Russell with the No. 1 pick of the 2007 NFL draft. He was released after only three seasons and posted a 7-18 record as a starter.

2010 – The Raiders traded a 2012 fourth-round draft pick to the Washington Redskins for Jason Campbell. He enjoyed moderate success in his two seasons.

2011 – The Raiders used a 2012 third-round draft pick so that they could select Terrelle Pryor in the third round of the NFL supplemental draft. He has started one game so far.

2011 – The Raiders traded a 2012 first-round draft pick and a 2013 second-rounder to the Cincinnati Bengals for Carson Palmer. He posted an 8-16 record as the starter.

2013 – The Raiders traded a 2014 fifth-round draft pick and a 2015 conditional draft pick to the Seattle Seahawks for Matt Flynn, who has made only two starts in his five-year NFL career.

if i wasnt laughing i’d be crying….raiders increased flynns salary!!!!….probably because he wouldnt come to this hell hole otherwise…and reggie had to have HIS GUY

To get there, the Raiders increased Flynn’s base salary from $5.25 million in 2013 and decreased his 2014 base salary by $1.25 million, from $6.25 million down to $5 million. Making the entire 2013 compensation fully guaranteed means that Flynn definitely will have a roster spot with the Raiders for the coming season.

so lets get this straight……the seahawks were going to cut flynn because he was overpaid…..so reggie gives the seahawks TWO…fckn TWO draft picks and overpays the guy even more than he was due

and you pryor guys thing TP is going to start….LOLOLOLOL

    ==============

Yeah TP6, better get in touch with the other guys the were in Denise’s doghouse.

  • RaidO

“Upon joining Seattle with a three-year deal worth $19.5 million, Flynn struggled to earn the starting role last summer while dealing with tendinitis in his throwing elbow. The problem persisted into the offseason even as he rehabilitated at the Athletes’ Performance center in Gulf Breeze, Fla.”

Flynn already has a weak noodle arm. Bad trade Reggie.

Please welcome your starting Raider QB for the 2013 Terrell Pryor.

Start printing up the jerseys it’s TP time.

Rude, McKenzie has a job and that is to build a winner. You don’t agree with the way he is doing his job.
By the way, have you ever had a job?

Your right his job is to win. If I started a new job and was 50% less effective and still planned on being less effective my 2nd year, I would be fired, no excuses.

Yeah, Mike Brown really wanted to get rid of Palmer. That’s why he had a press conference ripping on Palmer for not keeping his end of the contract and refused to let trade him to another team; even when it was obvious the situation wasn’t working out.

In hindsight? Sure. They are happy they have disturbingly freak faced looking Andy Dalton; who looks the bastard love child of Howdy Doody and Satan.

Most Raider fans don’t know what good players look like or don’t know how to appreciate a good player when they do come around.

C’mon guys this makes perfect sense. Flynn was of course gonna be on this team one year. Now if we dont want him next year his cap hit is much lower.

If we keep him next year we’re paying a starting QB 5mil which is a really good deal. This just makes good sense.

Yes we can. There was no reason for ripping the offense apart. Nor was their reason to mess the ST’s as well. None of us would have cried if he would’ve let the offense alone & just rebuilt the defense, but they had to overhaul everything & it will get him canned.

Any chance Mark is being stupid like a fox with this team in setting it up for sale.

Think about this scenario for the post-2013 season:
    - Current lease runs out on a second-rate stadium shared with a baseball team. Makes moving the franchise very possible or at least gives ownership significant leverage to negotiate on a new stadium.
    - Possibly the first pick in the 2014 NFL draft which has a few franchise QB possibilities including Teddy Bridgewater — who reminds me of Aaron Rodgers — and the highly marketable “Johnny Football.”
    - Maybe like $50-80 million in cap space. Not sure of the exact figure, but it’ll be something crazy like that.
    - No one would complain for a second if the new ownership dumped the entire coaching staff and front office.

Think about it. It’s an expansion team plus a few good pieces in place like Veldheer, Houston and hopefully whoever we take in the first round this year, with the opportunity to get your choice of rookie QBs.

But it’s better because it also comes with arguably the most recognizable, defined brands in all of professional sports.

    ^^^^^^^^
Yup. All McK’s main job is to clear the team from cap space struggles really and bring in younger hungry players that are cheaper than big budget guys.
    —————————————–
No, he’s not. You guys just can’t for the life of you see the rational behavior behind these moves. You look at it, chew on it, and you still don’t get it.

Raiders appear to be $7.1 million under the cap with Flynn’s restructure and Palmer’s pending departure.

    ———————————

We don’t have much cap room, so unless a FA player wants to sign for the league minimum or close to it at this point, Reggie needs to turn that #3 pick into at least 5-6 picks by trading down multiple times. If he wastes that #3 pick on a player instead of trading down, I don’t care what else he does…this draft will be an EPIC fail!

Flynn is not even healthy. Reggie dumpster dived again. The good thing is it looks like Pryor will be the guy and Palmer is GONE.

    February 28, 2013
“According to USA Today, Flynn has spent most of his offseason working to correct elbow tendinitis in his right arm. Flynn’s injury won’t require surgery, but it will probably make any potential trading partner nervous about dealing for Seattle’s No. 2 quarterback.

The tendinitis is something Flynn has dealt with off-and-on since late August. Flynn missed the Seahawks’ third preseason game with an injury that coach Pete Carroll described at the time as a “tendinitis-type thing.”

By the time October rolled around, things weren’t much better for Flynn. With the Seahawks offense struggling under Russell Wilson, some fans were calling for Flynn to start — yes, this happened — but Carroll said putting Flynn in wasn’t a possibility, “We have a little bit of a problem with Matt. Matt’s still not full speed,” Carroll said on Oct. 1. “Anybody that thinks, ‘let’s go with the other guy,’ well, he can’t practice yet.”

Now fast forward to Thursday’s report that suggests Flynn is still battling a tendinitis problem. The elbow issue may explain why Schneider isn’t sure what’s in store for Flynn’s future”

  • http://polarityblog.com Silverandblack666

I personally an not going to any games until Reggie is gone!

I paid good money all these years even supported Al and JaMarcus but not this tarped off seats stupid crap.

  • RaidersAllday_LtsGeTit

And people are b*tching we don’t have enough money on the salary cap this year! But we can throw away another 1M to a backup QB. Awesome…

    ——————

Some of you guys truly dont get it. Please dont even try to understand what Reggie is doing here.

nn was due $5.25 million per his contract when the Raiders signed him. With his restructure, the Raiders save in the long run but his 2013 salary jumps up to $6.5 million. The other kicker is that money is all guaranteed. So, if you were wondering if Flynn was going to make the team, the answer is yes.

If the Raiders get the trade done to send Palmer to Arizona, he will leave behind over $9.34 million in dead money. That plus Flynn’s $6.5 million cap hit end up being more than the $15.335 million cap hit with Palmer still on the roster. It is a small increase of $505,000 but it certainly isn’t the cap savings the Raiders needed.

After these moves are complete, the Raiders will sit at about $7 million under the cap.

The real savings comes off next season’s cap. The Raiders would have been saving off of next year’s cap anyway without Palmer’s scheduled $17 million cap hit in 2014. Matt Flynn’s contract was going to be $6.25 million – a $12 million savings over Palmer – and now it will drop to $5 million.

The 2013 cap may not be great but 2014 is shaping up to have a grip of cash to spend.

our WRs run horrible routes and it been 9 years since we had a WR catch 8 tds. thats ridiculous. Even under Hue we struggled in the red zone and our offense when Hue was HC was ranked 16th in the league. DMac has been injury prone and Palmer while throwing for 4000 yards had a 65 qb rating in the 1st quarter and ranked 29th as a QB on 3rd down. I do agree Knapp was a big problem , but our WRs suck and our overrated in here. Ours WRs struggle to create separation and in the redzone.
Look I not sold on reggie, its easier to dismantle a team them to rebuild. he deserves a draft and come september he needs to put a competitive team on the field. no 5 or 6 wins..If you look at the needs I described they are mostly on Defense. But IMO the players sucked just as much as the coaches and I have no problem getting rid of them.
