Flynn eager to part of something ‘special’

By Steve Corkran
Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013 at 12:32 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Quarterback Matt Flynn arrived in Alameda on Tuesday eager for the opportunity to be an NFL starter for the first time in his six NFL seasons and hopeful of being a part of something “special.”
Flynn addressed the media shortly after the Raiders traded predecessor Carson Palmer to the Arizona Cardinals and less than 24 hours after he was summoned from Baton Rouge, La., upon being told he was traded to the Raiders from the Seattle Seahawks.
“I want to be a part of something special,” Flynn said, “and that’s a big possibility here, of building something special, building a winning environment and building a really great organization. That’s part of the plan.”
Flynn, 27, knows a thing or two about winning. His teams won all through high school and college, and he has been part of winning teams for all but his rookie season in 2008, when the Green Bay Packers finished 6-10.
Winning is something that Flynn envisions doing with the Raiders, too, even if they appear to be in a rebuilding mode.
“I’ve been pretty fortunate,” Flynn said. “When you’re on good teams for that long, you just expect it.”
In Flynn, the Raiders are getting a quarterback with an accurate arm, a firm grasp of NFL offenses and someone with low mileage on his body.
They’re also getting a “smart, disciplined player that doesn’t like to lose, doesn’t accept losing,” Flynn said.
Flynn has started only two games during his five NFL seasons. He passed for nine touchdowns and 731 yards in those two starts, both with the Packers.
The Raiders parted ways with a 2014 fifth-round draft pick and a conditional pick in 2015 to get Flynn. He is signed for the next two seasons at less than the Raiders were slated to pay Palmer for 2013.

Austin. Need weapons on offense in this league to help the new QB’s…Flynn and TP. Having Austin will open up the offense for the rest of the players on the O.

If they draft Austin, then McK can possibly trade Ford for a 3rd or 4th round pick.

After taking Austin, then McK can draft DLine, OLine and CB’s the rest of the draft. Maybe take a TE late also.

No as the acting GM of the Oakland Raiders I nix that idea…………
Draft for the D this year. My choice would be to trade down for picks in the 1st an 2nd rounds. Hopefully staying in the top 10 of the first round and hope Star or Floyd are still there, if not take Werner. In the second take a corner. Maybe Alford. Pick up FA CB Winfield an
FA Andre Smith for the O line.
Done!Lets roll! And you guys that want to draft for the O are fired from this blog.

Rather take Austin any day of the week ahead of Floyd.

Yoru not listening. Nothing wrong with the taking the most dynamic and explosive player in the draft in Austin at 12 and then drafting Defense and OLine the rest of the way in the draft.

This Draft is deep at the DLine, CB and OLine positions.

    Afternoon Nation.

B@uce et al y’all got your wish and the Raiders have their ‘anyone but Palmer’ under Center this season.Whoever it is will have my support as always but I’m not gonna hide my disappointment in both losing a good passer and not getting a whole helluva lot in return.Better than the nothing it was beginning look like we’d get. This will be our 16th QB since 2005 (I think) and the lot of em have amassed a combined rating of 49!!!…..49?…..any wonder why we don’t win?
4000 yard QB’s are not common in the league so those of you in here that are gung ho on 2 unknown’s over one are defined as optimists.I’m rooting for either of em to come through but I won’t be surprised if they don’t.
    I also believe next year will be a good time as ever to have a high draft pick.Have to give RM a pass on last years draft….the pot was nearly empty by the time he got to eat and he doesn’t have a lot of picks this year either but we will get a better idea of RM ‘the evaluator’ this time around.$50 mil under the cap next year sounds awesome!!!….remains to be seen what is done with it.A few questions;
If Flynn can’t beat out Pryor Then do we carry a third QB?
If we are serious about giving both these QB’s a fighting chance then do we take Fisher with the 3rd?
(reading that he is a mirror image of Veldheer only on the right side).
And any else in here like Renfree as mid round shot?

That’s OK Jenkins is more of a role player anyway. I like Alford more. We got Porter so that’s great news

Yep he’s got other team’s to listen too offer wise….He might be another good bargain pickup. This reminds me of how much of a crapshoot this sh!t is.

Palmer has not been a winning QB for years. He left Cincy with a chip on his shoulder and it’s still there. 4000+ yards means nothing if it is in a losing effort. The Raiders need a QB with fire in his belly and I think we’ve got two on the roster that want to play. We need selfless players, not jaded ones coming out of a bad situation. I.e. Palmer coming out of Cincy. He would have gone anywhere to get away. Now, he wants a team that is a contender. I got news for you Palmer, if you are “The Man”, it’s your job to win.

Fisher is a interesting prospect all though it’s hard to fully judge him as he didn’t play against great talent in College. There are 4 other OT’s in the draft you would have to look at before deciding on Fisher. He’s very interesting though.

Wilson is a much better passer than ‘The Legend’ from everything I have seen.

Flynn certainly looked like a capable passer in his 2 opportunities
    ********************
For the record, Flynn is not my new ‘golden haired hero’ or idol or anything. I liked what I saw in his 2 starts, but I am well aware that 2 starts means d!ck in the NFL. I don’t care if he beats the Legend or not, just as long as whoever wins plays well

Totally agree, I believe our team is better already, because of Palmer being gone, and being able to allow Pryor & Flynn to duke it out for the starting QB job.

Palmer’s heart was still on that couch(man hit the lottery when raiders called him) he’s been mentally retired since he quit on the Bengals. He’s at a point in his career that he feels as if he doesnt have to prove anything.

But now we will have 1 of these younger QB’s (with hunger that want to prove themselves) do what’s necessary to display leadership qualities (team-oriented) and lead this team, I do believe that either QB will provide a brand of football that will keep the team perked up…that will translate to the whole lockerroom

Don’t agree .How is a team better when you go from a 4000+ passer to a journyman QB like Flynn. Palmers heart was into the team. He put up with a bad O line and had to sit and watch a really bad D. If he was at all mentally retired it was because of the way the team played and how they treated him. QBs need to to have the full support of their front office. By telling Palmer he had to compete for his job told him he didn’t have that support. I’d leave too. Bruce Arians is going to give Palmer that support and he’s going to light it up. Go Palmer

Palmer gets 10 mil in guaranteed money. He really did take less to become a pinata in Arizona. – i think it came down to 20 mil guaranteed over 2 years as opposed to 28 million with us…

but keep in mind Cardinals hit on Darnell Dockett, Calais Campbell, Fitz and Daryl Washington in the draft – much better defense, including corner Patrick Peterson. But oh, that offensive line – they better have Eric Fisher, and what would be interesting is if McKenzie took Fisher in the 3rd overall to dangle in trade to AZ (who needs him much more)

  • angry little man

Im glad Palmer gate is out of the way, what a mess Hue Jackson made that RM has to clean up. Giving up a 5th rounder in next years draft aint bad at all, that and the money this team will save.

Now we can focus on the draft, who’s it gonna be ? , Star, a super fast DE ? I say if Star is available we should take him

  • drummer1279

I can’t say I’m very upset to see Palmer gone, with his large contract, especially after he wanted to leave. He did put up decent numbers though, with a horrible defense, bad scheme/coaching (Knapp) and the resulting poor running game. Sure he had the turnover problem, but it was more of poor timing when it happened, than being a constant turnover machine. He showed flashes of being pretty decent, but he just couldn’t pull out a win in close games. It was time for a rebuild, and much like the defense that got sent packing, it made sense to let him walk as well.

I’m not sold on Flynn yet, and actually worry it may end up being a thorn in the Raiders side if he plays just average. I think I would have prefered they give Pryor a shot and see what he has, and if he worked out great, you have a young franchise QB, ala Cam Newton,or better hoepefully. If not, you have a great pick in the much stronger QB draft class next year.

I worry Pryor won’t get a chance, Flynn will be average or slightly above this year at best with a new syestem and inexperience, and we could be a middle of the pack team, missing out on a solid QB for the future. Flynn will be 28 when the season starts, and it’s likely to take a few years to hit his stride if he even does. Not exactly a huge window for him to grow before the window closes. We need a young QB, that can grow and lead this franchise, we’ve already lost 5 years + on Flynn’s career, even with low miles. It’s a 5 year plan at best, before we are looking for yet another QB. Go young and try to find a potential 10 year QB and have some stability for once.

Pryor has never been a looser. Stop hating on TP. Flynn is decent and that is it. Like I’ve said, we will see.

Well that least, the bad taste in the fans’ mouth is gone…Good luck to Bruce Arenas??? Flynn is a bonified backup! Ride the pine again. TPryor deserves a chance before any new arrival! Hey Spuds, complete the job, get rid of Seymour!

I really don’t think poorly of Pryor, I’d like to see what he can do. I’d like him to not float some of his passes so much, maybe rifle some in there, but I think he’s got real potential if he can progress some. I think he even got a little better later in the week 17 game as it went on with putting a little less touch on the ball. I like his ability, and work ethic from everything I’ve heard. I hope it’s a TRUE QB compitition and not a contract issue deciding the QB.

agree Drummer. Anyway, they both have qualities. Just want both to get a real chance and we’ll see how it goes. Palmer gone frees up lots of money in 2014 2015. Now focus on both the lines. Move Wis back to his natural position and get a center.

I dont mind which QB wins this competition, either one is better than that tin-hearted interception-machine called Palmer,he had no balls for a fight even with TP ,so happy the organisation did this deal,we need players that have balls heart and fight.not 3 and out players.cant thank Reggie enough for seeing through that mercenary Palmer i could not take another season of watching him,so happy

fellow raider semis, as i awake to the sound of the waves crashing into the rocks , i am reminded of the total rebuild that reggie has begun. be patient , reggie will have a draft shortly and as the summer progresses its a known fact that free agent bargains become more and more advantageous. the flypry 2 headed monster will generate much interest and debate so enjoy.

Lets be honest people we don’t know Matt Flynn from a can of paint this staff is a sham to try and build this guy up as some kind of prolific qb is rediculous. He is a 6’2 career back up that could not beat out a 5’10 rookie from Wis give me a break.
