Report: Raiders, Porter agree

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013 at 8:44 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders have reached agreement on a one-year contract with free agent cornerback Tracy Porter, ESPN reported Tuesday.

Porter, 26, played for the Denver Broncos in 2012 and 2013 after playing three seasons for the New Orleans Saints.

Best known for his 74-yard interception return for a touchdown against Peyton Manning in Super Bowl XLIV, Porter was a second-round draft pick out of Indiana . Raiders coach Dennis Allen was Porter’s secondary coach with the Saints.

Porter fell out of the Broncos rotation after issues with medication and regulating seizures limited his availability in October and November.

The first cornerback from outside the organization to sign with the Raiders during free agency, Porter joins Phillip Adams, Chimdi Chekwa and Brandian Ross on the roster.

I see alot of talk about Flynn being “untested” and how he only has one start etc. and how that’s risky, but is it anymore risky than drafting a QB? After all, rookies have never started an NFL game so how do you know how good they’ll be?

We would not get anything for Palmer due to the ridiculous conract he was given by Hue and Mark for a 32 year old retired QB.

    NOT A REGGIE ISSUE.

It had nothing to do with the timing of the deal.

Matt Flynn is a Raider now, so I hope he balls out of his mind. But if you are asking me right now, we HELLA just downgraded in QB.

I love it Kirk. Ur excuses for Pryor are that he had poor receivers. Aren’t those the same receivers Palmer had 4k with? U make urself into a clown when u say such ridiculous stuff. U cease having any credibility.

Time to weigh in on Hue Jackson’s big mid season 2011 trade for Carson.

Gives up our first round pick from 2012 and this year’s second round pick, which leads to an overall 8-16 record which is then manufactured into a conditional 7th round pick in 2014.

    DISASTER!

I am pretty sure it is about the timing of the deal. Which is why even at 80 Al would not have made this mistake.

There were more teams looking for QB 2 months ago than now he had more value then adn if RN knew he was going to ask him to take a pay cut that long ago then he made a mistake.

This is clearly a RM mistake that AD would not have made getting a 7th for him smh

Cause the D sucked last year.

A playoff defense and crap offense gets you to 4-6 wins.

A playoff offense and a crap defense gets you to the playoffs.

WE NEED MORE POINTS. Build the defense in the later rounds.

    O-line first…
    ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
It;s a matter of opportunity presented in the draft this year. Our O isn’t going to be great this year because of our QB situation. The best O lineman in the draft will be gone by the 3rd pick. The draft is rich with D players this year.Draft for D so we can start to stand up to Manning and Rivers then find a O lineman in the later rounds. Draft a QB next year and find good Olineman then.

what makes you think a rebuilding buff wants an aging qb, what makes you think kc would take cp over smith especially when smith cost less and why wouldn’t anyone interested not wait till he was cut?

  • CJ Legend 34

***Reggie is using what money, picks he has to build a team. Like his game of chess so far***

OK Raiders fans think about this. Last year, Tracey Porter was a top free agent at corner. Denver plays top dollar for the guy and he started having seizure like symptoms and made it back to play but first game back got a concussion.

So if he can stay healthy this would be a steal for us, but think if Reggie would have jumped into the game last year like Al Davis (RIP) most likely would have we would be paying Porter for a lost year and a big free agent contract. We are giving him a one year deal for way less money than Denver paid during a time were CBs are at a premium.

Porter can make big plays on the balls. He did it with the Saints. Picked off Farve and our rival Peyton Manning. Was a hawk on Manning in the Super bowl. I’m happy about this pick up.

This is also may help us take the best available CB in the draft Dee Milliner. Very aggressive and has some swagger in his game or best available. I am just thinking corner because we need CBs real bad and there is DL talent in later rounds. No DB talent in later rounds.

Here is Milliners Pros and Cons.

    Strengths:
*Cover corner who rarely allows separation
    Excellent in bump-and-run
*Can run with receivers in and out of breaks
    *Plus speed
*Has some ball skills and slaps lots of passes away
*Play-maker; the capacity to make clutch game-changing plays
*Can flip his hips to turn and run
    *Good tackler
    *Quality height, bulk
    *Not a gambler
    *Solid contributor against the run
    *Good length
    *Quickness
    *Fast feet
    *Good strength
    *Can run with receivers downfield
*Has effectively covered elite tight ends in man coverage
    *Adept in zone coverage
    *Athletic
    *Plays hurt
    *Improved his game
    *Upside

    Weaknesses:
    *Lack of interceptions
*Looked a little stiff at the Combine
    *Coming off shoulder surgery

  • kellygreenninja

    Details of the trade:
From the Raiders, Arizona receives Palmer and a seventh-round 2013 selection (219th overall, a pick initially acquired by Oakland from Carolina for WR Louis Murphy in July).
From the Cardinals, Oakland receives a sixth-round selection in this month’s draft (176th overall, initially obtained by Arizona from Tennessee, through Minnesota), as well as a conditional 2014 Arizona draft choice.

Nice thought Gdog but you know it won’t end. Heck, we’re still debating whether Cable should’ve been canned or not sometimes.

This Palmer thing was probably ONE PLAY away from being seen as a good move instead of an real bad one by the “experts”.

IF….our defense stops SD at their 1/2 yd. line LATE IN THE 4TH in 2011, when we were down only 31-26, we get the ball back in good field position and with momentum on our side most likely score and we win the game and Palmer is the hero who came off the couch to bring us our first winning season in 8 yrs, first division title since 2002, and most likely we beat Pittsburgh the next wk at home in the playoffs.

You can’t fire Hue after that..no way…so he stays…the offense stays intact and who knows what happens last yr.

Perhaps it would have just delayed the inevitable of having to pay the piper for all the out of whack contract stuff etc. but it’s interesting how close we were to things being alot different..whether for better… or worse.

Reggie worked it just to get anything for Palmer. Everyone knew he was getting released. Palmer stood his ground and wouldn’t take too much of a cut. Very easy for the cards to wait till he was released but this is the only way they could make sure they didn’t have to bid for him. Getting the cards to give us a pick for a guy they’re gonna have to pay 10 million a year to was actually good.

We now have 3 picks in the 7th and 2 in the 6th. We own the late rounds!

  • guest123

Now I’m starting to worry that Reggie overvalues those 7th round picks. We may trade back and trade back and end up with half dozen 7th rounders before it’s all done.
