Raiders stay on defensive, sign Porter

The Raiders remained primarily in a defensive stance with regard to free agency Wednesday, announcing the signing of cornerback Tracy Porter.

Porter, whose pending deal with the Raiders was reported by ESPN Tuesday, is the seventh defensive player added to the roster since free agency began.

Given how thin the Raiders are at cornerback, Porter, 26 and coming off an injury-plagued season, with the Denver Broncos, is a likely starter.

At present, the only other cornerbacks on the roster are Chimdi Chekwa, Brandian Ross and Phillip Adams, who have a combined total of four NFL starts.

A veteran of 43 starts over five seasons, Porter has eight career interceptions and two regular-season touchdowns, not including a 74-yard interception return against Peyton Manning for the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen was the defensive backs coach for the Saints when Porter was a starter there.

Last season, Porter experienced had issues with seizure-like symptoms in August and October and was limited to six games and four starts. When his medication was regulated and Porter returned to action in December, he sustained a concussion that sidelined him for the rest of the season.

Since free agency opened, the Raiders have signed linebackers Kaluka Maiava (Cleveland), Nick Roach (Chicago) and Kevin Burnett (Miami), defensive tackles Pat Sims (Cincinnati) and Vance Walker (Atlanta) and defensive end Jason Hunter (Denver).

Offensive tackle Alex Barron (St. Louis) is the lone offensive free agent signed from outside the organization.

Nine Raiders who were either released or had their contracts expire have signed with other teams: punter Shane Lechler (Houston), safety Michael Huff (Baltimore), defensive end Matt Shaughnessy (Arizona), tight end Brandon Myers (N.Y. Giants), running back Mike Goodson (N.Y. Jets), defensive tackle Desmond Bryant (Cleveland), linebacker Philip Wheeler (Miami), safety Mike Mitchell (Carolina) and wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey (Colts).

– Quarterback Matt Flynn will wear No. 15 for the Raiders. He is the fourth quarterback in franchise history to wear No. 15, joining Jeff Hostetler (1993-96), Mike Rae (1976-77) and Tom Flores (1960-66).

I’m glad to see people getting on the Star wagon! I’ve been banging that drum for a while. He is the best player in this draft. Floyd makes absolutely no sense for this team, as he is a 4-3 DT. Star can play anywhere along a 3 man front, where would Floyd play in a 3 man front? Floyd is of the same mold as Houston, we have no one like Star. Further more, I can’t think of another NT in this draft that even compares to Star. If he’s available at 3 I would take about two seconds to hand in the card.

  • DMAC

    As of 2day….

My pick is Star or Fisher
If they’re gone, big Reg needs to trade down.

  • http://www.raiders.com Raider O

I’m not going to be mad if we draft an OT, but I really doubt we are going to do that.
I think we will do our best to trade down to get more picks, or we are going to draft a DL or a DB. The best DL and DB prospects are Star and Milliner IMHO.

  • guest123

    Totally agreed Irish Boozer,

I’d hold the card to see if I get a ridiculous offer though. But you are right, Star at #3 is a no brainer pick.

  • guest123

If we draft Star, it would be the second year in a row that Reggie drafts a Utah Ute with his first pick.

  • DMAC

Does Flynn throw the deep ball accurately?

  • rediaR

I really don’t think a DT is the first pick. Reggie has acquired stopgaps everywhere (including DT) but pass rusher. Using the same 3, 8 or 12 logic on them, a pass rusher at 3 is well within reason if there is one Reggie believes in.

The problem is no pass rusher is worth a top 3-5 pick IMO.

  • Plunketthead

    O
I don’t think it will come down to need for Reggie. It will be about making sure that pick is a pro bowler/starter for the next 5 years.

Star, Eric and Luke fit that best. You can probably throw Millener in that groups as a starter.

Those pass rushers are all iffy

#3 verses #8, or #12? It’s almost trying to split hairs a little TOO much. If he’s our guy, then he’s our guy……doesn’t matter if we take him at #1 or #25
    ———–

Even more true this year since the top of this draft class doesn’t stand out all that much

    **************************
If we get star at 8 vs. 3 then we get at least a middle 3rd as well. That would be the difference.

    ==========

And THAT Sir, is the gamble. I take risks on certain things, but if it comes down to somebody like Star….I tend to feel like “Irish Boozer” up above. What is it worth to lose out on him? That mid 3rd rounder would for EVERMORE be laiden with that baggage….

“We COULDA had Star, but instead we took so and so with our extra 3rd pick that we traded back for.”
I don’t play that game anyway. Coulda had Calvin Johnson? Oh, Eff that….can make a guy crazy.

I think all things considered, if Reggie had a choice of QB’s in this draft (Geno included) he’d still rather have Flynn. And he got him for much cheaper than a #3 overall pick.

  • McFaddens_Sneakers

All things considered Palmer was an absolute failure in Oakland. The team regressed on his watch and no matter whose fault that was is irrelevant. Dude was supposed to be a franchise QB. Franchise QBs find ways to win when the game is on the line. They don’t massage the rock during a two minute drill. They don’t throw pick sixes in the clutch. They don’t rack up pointless stats when the outcome is no longer in doubt. And they certainly don’t refuse a pay cut from one bad team just to take one for another bad team.
Most of all they don’t get traded for a 7th round pick.

You can watch all of Flynn’s throws as a Packer on youtube. His deep ball is suspect. I’ve seen him throw a couple of strikes, but also tends to underthrow the reciever at times resulting in picks, or in one case, Jordy Nelson pulling the ball off his butt and scoring anyway.

According to the Arizona Republic, the Cardinals were “not impressed” with free agent RT Eric Winston’s tape.
It appears most of the league isn’t, as Winston has made just two visits since the start of free agency, and couldn’t land deals with tackle-needy Miami and San Diego. Winston held his own for the Chiefs last season, but has been released each of the past two offseasons. He may have to wait until after the draft to find a new home.
