Update: Raiders waive McClain

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, April 5th, 2013 at 1:35 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders will waive middle linebacker Rolando McClain Friday, according to an ESPN report.

UPDATE: The Raiders confirmed they have waived McClain.

McClain’s departure was a foregone conclusion ever since his two-game suspension last season for conduct detrimental to the team after he got into an exchange with coach Dennis Allen after being informed Omar Gaither would be the starting linebacker.

There was no immediate confirmation from the Raiders on the transaction.

Earlier in the season, McClain was removed from the field in the nickel defense, with rookie Miles Burris taking his place.

The Butkus Award winner from national champion Alabama never became the playmaker or defensive presence the Raideres had hoped after making him the No. 8 overall pick in the NFL draft.

While often invisible on the field, McClain made headlines for the wrong reasons off the field, most notably an in-season arrest in 2011 on charges that he allegedly fired a gun near the head of an acquaintance following an argument.

Misdemeanor charges of third-degree assault, reckless endangerment, menacing and illegal discharge of a firearm within the city limits of his hometown of Decatur, Ala., were eventually dropped when the victim in the case declined to assist in prosecution.

Most recently, McClain was arrested for failing to citation after being pulled over for illegal window tint.

The Raiders signed three linebackers during the free agent period, Kaluka Maiava, Nick Roach and Kevin Burnett. Roach is the likely starting middle linebacker if the Raiders retain a 4-3 defense.

What NCAA Title game! Congrats to L-Ville. Glad to see Pitino win another one…especially after turning LVille around after all these years.

Michigan just ran out of gas. Congrats to Mich again for making this a helluva tourney!

  • Priesttj12

These people want us believe we went 0-16 back to back years instead of 8-8. They are so funny with their “over the top” desire to make Reggie a saint…….lol

Good pickup by McK do get Jenkins on the cheap. He is going to play hard for a big pay day next year.

Mathieu would be a good pick in Round 3 IF he is still there.

    Substantially upgraded huh?

We will see about that. It says here none of the 3 are starters, and only 2 of the 3 will even make their teams.

Who sez that? What does “here” mean? Your little brain?

I don’t see any of them sitting the bench much… and even if they do, its not like they got picked up by Det, jax, and KC. One of them is winning a ring…

Now trade down and get more picks McKenzie or draft Star, Jordan, Ansah or Fisher.

Really? You think 2 of the 3 max will even make their teams? Come on, man.

I feel pretty confident all 3 will be starters. Maybe Kelly, due to age, may be used as more of a rotational player than a clear-cut starter, but all three will have huge PT and probably all three will start on their teams.

Maybe it’s just wishful thinking, but it’s looking more and more like we’ve GOTTA be targeting an edge rusher with our first pick. Preferably Dion Jordan or Ansah. Just basing that on the premise that most other positions of need are being at least somewhat shored-up in free agency.

Veldheer, Houston, and Reece(possibly DMC) need shiny new contracts…

Fair enough and good point. I would rather see our top pick go to o-line because they bust twice as less as d-line, but if Reggie hits the lottery with a d-lineman after letting Bryant walk, I will become a believer.

DL is the next best scenario.

i’d rather build our LB and DE in the draft, get this front seven REALLY rollin .. if Tarver gets a pass rush hopefully he can do something with this unit. that scares me the most, Tarver’s questionable play calling at times. he was a rookie, hopefully he’s learned his lesson on when and when not to call a soft zone.

Gravity is a theory to attempt to explain what we think we observe.

    No more.

The moon landing was “televised” and “reported” at a time when our scientific ability to do it was……questionable at least. And there was great political reason to show we did it. It was during a time when the U.S. gov was very interested in the powers of propaganda as a tool for affecting mass opinion.

We never went back. There’s nothing interesting in what amounts to another planet. Really? A great new frontier. And we aren’t interested in doing anything but planting our flag. I see.

Did it happen? What “proof” do u have beyond being told so , and seeing tv footage?

Maybe it did but it seems fairly ridiculous to think we have that kinda technology when we can’t get off fossil fuel.

    ===================
We could be completely independent of fossil fuels tomorrow. There is just too much money to be made off of it for the powers that be to stop using it. As long as they can make a penny off of it, they will burn every drop of oil and every grain of coal that they can pull out of the ground.

    ———————–

I don’t think that’s true. Or at least not practical. Fossil fuels are still considerably cheaper than alternative fuels and they provide more reliable, controllable energy than wind and solar.

  • dr_robert

    mike jenkins a great signing.

    former pro-bowler. only 28.

another guy with a “show me” contract.

now, a FS and maybe a TE to go.

add a RDE in the draft and the rest is depth.

the only issue is we end up staying at #3, no RDE would seem to merit the pick, so he might go Fisher/BPA. but that would leave us with a gaping hole at RDE.

if he went DT, i would be shocked. doesn’t seem to fit what he’s doing.

we already have 4 of HIS GUYS on the roster.

    Fisher/Ansah is my guess.

  • RaiderSam

looks like they will be in the low $90 million range for cash.
the Raiders will have around $19 million to play with after they pay their draft choices and add a few more free agents.

they have signed a majority of FA’s – Kaluka Maiva, Nick Roach, Tracy Porter, Mike Jenkins, Vance Walker and Pat Sims.

that means they will need to get a foundation of players in the next two drafts 4 starters and about 10 other roster fills.

FS Bacarri Rambo or Phillip Thomas and/or Brandon Bishop
DT Star Louletelei or Sharrif Floyd
CB Robert Alford and/or Tharoid Simon
DE Dion Jordan/Ziggy Ansah or LSU’s Lavar Edwards
SS Jonathan Cyprien or Errol Wolf

Best player available; Eric Fisher, OT

Then in 2014 its moderate-high-priced free agents, which could be a burden. – Aqib Talib,
Dan Connor, Brian Orakpo, Greg Olsen and/or Tony Scheffler/Fred Davis
