Q&A with DE Carter

The Raiders re-signed veteran defensive end Andre Carter on Tuesday. A short time later, he spoke with the Bay Area media on a conference call. Here is the transcript:

Q: What does it mean to you to continue your career with the Raiders in the Bay Area?

Carter: It means so much. As you know, I started my football career at Oak Grove High School in San Jose, went to Cal, went to the 49ers. Of course, I played with other teams, but it all comes full circle. It started in the Bay and it’s a great opportunity to be back in the Bay and be back with an organization that’s trying to turn things around and be an elite team again. So I’m very grateful.

Q: How many years would you say you’d still like to play?

Carter: Everybody always asks me that. One of the old vets finally told me, if you can go for 10, go for five more, but I just take it one year at a time. Everything is always based upon the individual, just how you feel. Can you wake up and do it again week after week? That’s just something that I’ve been taught consistently since day one. I just take it one year at a time and 2013 will be year 13 for me. I’m just taking it all in stride.

Q: What was your feeling about how the Raiders defense finished the season last year and your role in that?

Carter: In general, we definitely had a little bit of struggles in the beginning, but towards the end, we came along strong. I just think we were communicating real well. We were making plays. We weren’t giving up as much yardage as we did in the beginning. Like any scheme, it takes some time. And when you’re dealing with a lot of younger guys that are just kind of maybe unsure of themselves or just unsure of the scheme, we just continued to talk and communicate and towards the end you could see it was very productive. That was just something that was a stepping stone as far as our development and we just continued this from then on. As far as for myself, I appreciate the Raiders organization for bringing me in, especially coming off a major injury. And then personally for myself, I just started coming back to my own, to how I basically played through 2011, before I got hurt. For them to see that and bring me back, they believed in me and believed I still had a lot left in the tank, not only from a player standpoint, but from a leader standpoint. Taking that leadership into the locker room, teaching the younger guys how it’s done, what it takes to be a professional, not just from a football standpoint, but just life in general because this game is never promised. One play could be your last. I’ve been very fortunate to play for a long period of time. I pray that the young guys that I take under my wing that they have a long career as well.

Q: Since the season ended and free agency started, was it your feeling that the Raiders were going to bring you back?

Carter: I was optimistic. I knew there was going to be a lot of changes after last season, but I was optimistic just talking to Coach DA [Dennis Allen], [Defensive Coordinator Jason] Tarver, and later on, talking to Reggie McKenzie. I think we were on the same page that I was going to come back and I wanted to come back. The Bay Area means a lot to me. It’s just a special area. Like I said, I wanted to see this organization win because they haven’t won in over a decade, which is a shame because you have a lot of talent. It just takes the right guys to turn this thing around.

Doubt we are bringing in more before the draft.

    @Dr Bob

you and Jhill think it’s a forgone conclusion that B Ross will be on the roster in 2013, but he’s an ERFA that hasn’t been tendered. Same with J Stewart

by the way, Ross is listed as a corner.. not safety

    @ Rockstar,

Why you hate on little #12? He’s dirt cheap and our best kickoff returnman we got. Still paying him peanuts and even if he gets hurt, you can’t hate on the low rent guys. If he was making DHB type money, I’d be on your hatemobile right there as a copilot. But Ford is young and hungry and might as well get his best years out of him while we can.

B Scott will probably be signed and he’s also a return man
    ——

Is he a Punt Returner? We already have a KR in Ford.
    ======

I know he returns kickoffs, not sure about punts
We need someone badly to return punts for us
I’m tired of dummies catching the ball inside our own 5 yd line
Or letting the ball sail over there heads
I know Branch was a return man at UConn and was pretty good at it
Doubt he’ll be returning punts though
    Maybe Phillip Adams???
Didnt he return a few punts for us last season?

Its funny how Reggie had so many holes to fill…

    everyone had no belief.

and right before the draft he has added solid playerr, depth and starters ….

and June 1st Oak gets the big cap room from Huff’s deal and they got the 3.6 mill voided cuz of Rolando’s suspension in his contract details ….

If you really look at the amount of work this guy is doing, he must be barely sleeping ….

He is doing an amazing job ….

Now as they draft looms, our holes are more clear:

    More DB’s …
    TE
    Pass rushers, edge guys
    Offensive RT, G

Snbg–well star rules this board and some other reports. But forgetting about mocks for a moment, for whatever reason Floyd is rated higher by scouting services. Floyd’s stock SOARED after the combine. Stars fell a bit due to the heart issue and hasn’t quite recovered.

Reggie will have his own board and many times a team’s board is very different.

My feeling is Reggie has taken star off his board.

Think about it. It’s Reggie’s first #1. Is he gonna take an interior player that could end up having to retire early? Too risky. Especially when there are other, potentially better choices.

Star is an interior hog. He is good but he’s not mean joe Greene. I don’t think.
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
All good points Dr. Star would be my pick. That heart prob is troubling. It’s just curious, that’s all

    ******************************************

This is why I’m all about Warmack right now. Teaming him with Veldeer and Wiz creates a dominant Oline, especially is Bresiel or Bergstrom improve or we draft a Hog for the right side later.

Personally, I think we’ve been going all D in the offseason so we can go all O in the Draft.

Interesting article that suggests rookie QB’s maybe heavily drafted in the first round because of the 5th year option. Maybe Geno’s value starts to warm up?

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

Dennis allen is under a microscope in my book.

He only produced four wins and made some horrific gaffs along the way.

Hiring knapp (although reggie is just as guilty here)and failing to adjust the offense for his players were two bad choices.

His defense was shaky to pathetic, and only looked decent in the final quarter of the season. Strike 3.

nearly losing control of the team, while guys lolly gagged and got arrested, resulting in on filed practice disrupting meltdowns.

Of course the biggest and most mind blowing blunder, failing to activate and start Terrell pryor, or even bother to take a look at him at all. Who could forget the barnum and baily acrobatic flip flop of the century? “we just dont thing terrelle is ready to be a back up”, to the very next week ‘I was really impressed with his command and leadership”.

Now allen has no excuses. Gone is the big money qb standing in the way of giving pryor a solid look.

Gone are the malcontents and over paid guys that pre date allen. He is getting his team. Even guys like porter and young that have played for allen here to help install allens vision.

He will need to win and it hinges on 2 things in my mind.

How does the defense perform? When does pryor play.

This upcoming draft will give him even more pieces for his project. he needs to get it right, or he will be unemployed.

  • RaiderFredinDallas

Reggie has gone strong on D in Free Agency.
Look for Reggie to go strong on Offense on this Draft.
IF we keep the third pick, he may go either way.
Heavy on Offense in this years draft.

  • Marks hair

    Trade back

  • RaiderFredinDallas

Reggie has given DA plenty of tools to do the job on D.
Plenty of rope. Do the job or youre out.

  • RaiderRetribution

Seneca Wallace would be an excellent pick up as our backup QB; I’m truly hoping Reggie signs him.

Would give Pryor someone to learn from who has a similar qb style a gifted athlete who could have been a premier and elite WR, RB, DB but chose to stay true to his heart and continue to be a qb; played great as a backup, a Seattle fan favorite.

Not going to argue about DA being under a microscope this year.

Hated the hiring of Greg Krapp, but like that he didn’t wait to give him a 2nd season or the OL coach for that matter. (I give Reggie a pass on this one, because he has to let his HCs choose their staff after our Reputation with Al)

Other huge blunder was not giving TP 3 or 4 games at the end to see what you got. Once you’re eliminated from the playoffs…got to see what you have for next year.

Reggie has signed a whole bunch of guys who already know DA…

He’s got to show significant improvement this season.

I have no doubt Reggie will can him too if he doesn’t like what he sees.

Forget what game or who was outrunning everyone down the left sideline and Branch came frome the far side and ran him down inside the 10, like 50 yds or so. They settled for a FG. They probably won the game anyway, but it was impressive.

    Raiders re-signed CB Joselio Hanson.
The Raiders signed the slot corner after he was released at final cuts by the Eagles last season, and he went on to play 571 snaps. With Tracy Porter and Mike Jenkins expected to man the outside, Hanson should remain at nickel back in 2013. Going on 32, Hanson graded out positively in Pro Football Focus’ ratings last season, and notched two picks and a forced fumble.
