Raiders announce Jenkins signing

The Raiders signed cornerback Mike Jenkins to the roster Tuesday, the second presumptive starter at that position in two weeks.

Last week, veteran Tracy Porter was signed to position that until then included only Phillip Adams, Brandian Ross and Chimdi Chekwa.

It’s the second time in two seasons Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie signed second-tier free agents who figured to be immediate starters. ESPN reported Jenkins agreed to terms with Oakland Monday.

Last season, Oakland signed Ron Bartell and Shawntae Spencer, who ended up as Week 1 starters. Neither worked out, as Bartell broke his shoulder blade in the opener, missing several weeks before returning to the roster and then eventually being released, and Spencer sustained a severe mid-foot strain in Week 2 that ended his season.

Jenkins is a veteran of 71 games and 48 starts for the Dallas Cowboys. He was a Pro Bowl performer in 2009, a year after being a first-round selection out of South Florida in 2008.

Last season, Jenkins played in 13 games with two starts as his role was diminished after Dallas signed free agent Brandon Carr and drafted Morris Claiborne in the first round.

Better coaching maybe we win those games by 10????

    LOL…

    ^^^^^^^^

    lol indeed.

Understandable for the younger set that did not get a chance to see a team that from 1974 to 1984 go to 7 AFC Championship games and win 3 Super Bowls. If only they had better coaching?!?!?

    lol

    ++++++++++++++

The topic was Madden, so cut that back to 1 SB win. Didn’t Madden lose like 5 AFC championship games?

There was a reason it took him so long to get into the HOF….a better coaching staff the Raiders might have been the team on the 70s.

    Just saying.

Queefs down to considering 4 players for the top pick.

    Joekel
    Fisher
    Star
    Floyd

I hope they screw up and take Floyd #1 overall!

That would also guarantee Fisher or Joekel will fall to us at #3 and McK will be receiving plenty phone calls and trade offers!

    Honey Badger?

I doubt they go there. Teams like the Patriots, who have a well-established coaching staff and a proven track record, can afford to gamble on head cases (Moss, Stallworth, Chad Ocho, and now T. Kelly).

Our saggy titted HC isn’t quite there yet.

Agree I saw his interview with sanders and it doesnt look like the type of player that reggie will target.
FYI raiders sign Andre Carter to a one year deal. if he can get back to form he could be a prety good rusher at the end position.

How much did we pay Underwood???

My point is we will never pay a guy with questionable character big money.

We certainly will never draft one especially in the high rounds where more money is involved.

Sorry, that wasn’t my point to that. I thought he did well for us as a safety until he got hurt. I know Reggie will never pay top dollar for an attitude, unless that attitude is to win games!

Raiders sign Andre carter, who gave us a pretty solid pass rush when he got right at the end of the year and I think still has gas in the tank.

    Very good signing.

It appears Reggie plans on going into the draft with no NEEDS, so he has flexibility and get the BPA wherever he’s at.

Just need safeties, a TE, and a vet qb now.

Then it’s whoever is at the top of his board.

He really means it about this “competition at every position” thing.

So glad the resinged Carter and was really hoping they would try out Jenkins for a year (which they did). The guy is just now getting 100% back from injuries that slowed him down. Really good 24 hours for Raiders.

Tyrann Mathieu is a football player in every way, the guy knows how to play the game and does so at a high level. If I were a gm I would jump at the chance to take him and turn him into a defensive weapon. Wouldn’t be surprised if a contender like SF took him late in the 2nd

Shariff Floyd to Lamarr Houston Comparison:

Coming out of college, where they both played at elite BCS schools (Houston at Texas, Floyd at Florida), Houston was bigger (6-3 305 vs. 6-3 297), slightly faster (4.84 forty, 1.68 10-yard split vs, 4.92 forty, 1.68 10-yard split), and more bounce (33.5 vert and 114 inch broad jump, vs. Floyd 30 vert and 106 broad jump). Floyd did not compete in the bench (red flag) compared to Houston’s 30 reps. Houston measured 33 inch arms, compared to 31.75 for the relatively short-armed Floyd (top DTs are usually 33 inch+).

Aside from Houston’s overall better physical make up, he also had better production, with 136 tackles, 35.5 tackles for a loss and 14.0 sacks compared to 92-19.5-4.5 for Floyd.

Lamarr Houston was a great pick at #44 in 2010.

Unless we want to be drafting a poor man’s Lamarr Houston, why would we use the #3 pick on Floyd? Hopefully KC or Jax over-reach for him.

B@uce–it doesn’t matter what u think of the guys we have. The reality is that there are players that can start at those positions.

It allows Reggie to do what comes to him in the draft. He’s not desperate for a RDE cuz he has carter. He’s not desperate for a DT cuz he has sims and walker. He has guys in-house to play OL.

I think the best scenario Raider Nation can hope for is to have an owner like Al Davis who not only wants to win but is willing to spend to build a winner and a GM like Reggie McKenzie who is fiscally conservative and has a strong enough persona to serve as a counterbalance. Add a Head Coach who can lead and knows what he is doing (just hire the complete opposite of Dennis Allen!!)

    That is the Raider Way.

It worked in the Flores, Madden, Wolf and Davis. It worked with Gruden, Allen, Trask and Davis. I think the main problem now is that we have an owner that knows that estate tax is looming when Mrs. Davis passes away and that its unlikely that he can hold on to the team after that. We’ve just went from one extreme to another. I expect the same results until there is balance in the front office.

Andre Carter re-ups with the Raiders
Posted by Darin Gantt on April 9, 2013, 11:51 AM EDT
    Andre Carter AP

It took Andre Carter some time to end up with the Raiders last year, and now he’s staying.

According to Josina Anderson of ESPN, Carter is staying with the Silver and Black on a one-year contract.

Carter signed with the Raiders a month into last season after multiple visits. A torn quad muscle from 2011 kept him from capitalizing on his 10-sack season with the Patriots. He had 2.5 sacks in 12 games with Oakland last year.

Carter’s been a productive player when well, with 78.5 sacks in 12 years, with four double-digit sack seasons. For a team trying to scrape through this year while working out from under a mountain of dead money, they could do a lot worse.

As it stands, Revis remains a member of the Jets, and the organization is insisting that he show up for voluntary offseason workouts in order to receive his $3 million bonus. The Jets’ strategy remains a mystery but in the meantime, perhaps Revis and Tim Tebow can start a support group for soon-to-be former players.”

Good signing with the quality veteran Carter. Perfect bridge player for drafting the raw but absolutely freakish Ansah – can mentor him on the game and position, and can spell him when needed. You are overthinking this. We will pay the right players the right money if we want them.

See my earlier posts regarding the fact we will NEVER again pay big money to questioanble character guys.

“I mentioned earlier that IMO this was the biggest issue that plagued Mr. Davis in the new NFL ESPECIALLY IN THE CAP ERA.

In today’s game one stroke of a pen sets up a player for life. If he does not love football you then get Sands, Kelly, JR, McClain etc.
Back in the Raider dynasty years, many players needed to work a second job to live.
Character issues were a bit less important because those guys needed the money and Mr. Davis paid well.
The last ten years are evidence of what not bringing in character guys does to a football team.
Reggie and DA are looking for a totally different mindset ESSENTIAL IN TODAY’S GAME.”
