Jennings says he’s joining Raiders

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, April 10th, 2013 at 6:45 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Latest write-thru of ever-changing Raiders moves . . .

The Raiders appeared close to adding Rashad Jennings as a backup to running back Darren McFadden Tuesday as well as the confirming the addition of safety Reggie Smith.

The only announcement made by the club was the signing of cornerback Joselio Hanson, who started five games for the Raiders last season and is the third cornerback added to the roster in the past week.

The NFL Network and CBSsports.com have reported the Raiders are nearing a deal with quarterback Seneca Wallace to join Matt Flynn and Terrelle Pryor.

Jennings has gained 944 yards on 228 carries over three seasons for the Jacksonville Jaguars as the primary backup for Maurice Jones-Drew. He averaged just 2.8 yards per carry (282 yards, 101 carries) in 2012 for a Jacksonville team that went 2-14.

Jennings tweeted Wednesday evening, “It’s official, I’ll be rocking that Black and Silver this yr.’’ and implored Raider Nation “let’s go make it happen.’’

It wasn’t official enough for the Raiders to make an announcement however as they worked on contract details.

Considering McFadden’s propensity for injury _ he’s missed 23 games and has never played a full season _ running back is a position where the club is in need of depth.

Smith tweeted he was returning to California and included an instagram photo of himself working papers with a Raiders insignia. Smith played four seasons with the 49ers before signing with the Carolina Panthers as a free agent, but didn’t make the Panthers roster out of training camp and didn’t play last season.

Hanson, who had five starts for the Raiders last season, joins Tracy Porter and Mike Jenkins in a position group that includes Chimdi Chekwa, Brandian Ross, Phillip Adams and converted running back Taiwan Jones.

Wallace has 17 starts in nine seasons, having played two seasons with the Cleveland Browns after playing seven years with the Seattle Seahawks.

With salary cap space dwindling, the Raiders are at a point where it will be difficult to make many moves for players other than those at or near minimum wage _ Hanson probably qualifies _ unless they restructure McFadden.

The Raiders primary focus is on adding players through the NFL draft, April 25-27.
At present the Raiders have selections in the first (third overall), third and fourth rounds, three in the sixth round and one in the seventh round.

Haven’t been complaining about Reggie. Just DA. Acknowledging he IS on the hot-seat 2013. He’s not safe, not safe for four years (no matter what). And making a HC safe for four years isn’t ideal — no fire lit under them.
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
Al lot of the folks are down on Reg/DA. It seems to me your points are based on your early judgements of DA and not on the reality of the cap and the mess the Raiders are in. Bill Walsh would be struggling and folks here would be calling for his head

All I have to say to sell the “fire Reggie now” crowd is this. Why are you so sure he sucks? And if your so smart to be able to judge a GM in less then 2 years why are you not working for an NFL team right now? Or what team do you work for. We talk Raiders, Reggie GM’s. By my opinion, he is doing a good job, but I really can’t say until another few years go by.

And they r the worst team in their division. I know our org has been bad, but AZ a Winner? So funny.. They lost more good players on D than we did. And they still havent signed anyone to replace any if them. We’ll win more games than AZ this yr

that’s a crowd of one. Dr HST is the only one chanting that every day. And he may turn out to be right when all is said and done.

I think the jury is out still for Reggie, even though he’s gained some credibility with his offseason moves.

But DA is another story. You will find a sizeable “fire Dennis Allen NOW” group or at least a bunch of folks who want him coaching this season on the hot seat.

Bottom line is DA is on his second set of assistants already he threw Knapp under the bus and everything else he could find. Now he has what many term as better coaches. I don’t doubt they’re better but that aint saying much based on how horrible the last set were. My point is he has been allowed to hire TWO sets of coaches at this point he either shows his stuff or he has to go. He should’e done it the right way the first time. Two years two OC’s and so on….no more excuses. YOU HIRED THEM!

For years people yelled at Mr Davis for not allowing a rookie coach to hire his own assistants. Now you know why…

The Raiders have turned over the roster changed coaches and now I want to see some results. No more Cap crying, draft pick crying and the mean Al Davis crying. I want results………….period

For years people have hired their own assistants and have gone to Super Bowls, too. Most notably, Ken Whisenhunt, who interviewed and asked if he could pick his own assistants – you saw how that went

Sean Payton – you saw how Bill Parcells talked him out of that

Davis picked people WHO WERE NOT READY, HAD NO GM, AND NO SAY in Personnel. Chuck Pagano dissed the old guy left and right, as he moved on to the playoffs with the Ravens, then the Colts last year.

He would bypass Rodney Harrison (who wanted to sign) for FREAKING RONNY JENKINS.

please, lets keep it real and not scape goat Dennis Allen.

  • RNOraiderFan

Guest, I’m with that. GM’s work by years. Once the season is in motion the GM is handcuffed til next year. Coaches work by games and halftime adjustments. I’ve seen Dennis in 20 games since becoming a HC. I think he had our CB’s playing beyond their skill level, but besides that I wasn’t impressed.

Good morning nation. Very excited about the necessary changes that this franchise has FINALLY decided to make. It’s been sickening for the past decade how pathetic our performance both throughout season and offseason alike has been.

Im not sold on DA, time will tell, but I do like what Reggie is adding/rebuilding with what he has inherited; albeit he should have recognized the situation for what it was last season and cut the fat then, ie Richard Seymour.

Get over this – just get on board…there is no miracle GM or head coach turning this around.

We are paying for the AWFUL drafts and head coaching turnover and having no GM for the past decade.

    THE END.

no one wants to admit it – we never really rebuilt the way its supposed to be done. We got by with free agents, and resurrected QBs, thhn the age of the QB came ; Manning-Rivers-Brady-Brees- and Rothlisberger (who probably should have been drafted)

we drafted a first round bust, and it sent ripple effects to future drafts and badly done , weighty contracts.

I think where DA could potentially be on the hot seat is if he “loses the locker room” or starts out decent…competitive and then has another stretch of embarrassing blowouts instead of steadily getting better.

I wanna say I like most of these moves he’s doing, but until I see this team play on the field I have no idea.

On paper…I think our defense looks better than last yr. for sure.

  • 1960AutumnWind

Regarding Morris in Tampa Bay not a lot different than Calahan in Oakland. Great first year then the wheels came off afterwards. Cali got 2 years instead of 3.

If DA goes 2-12 and we have blowout loses like we have had in Maimi last two years or the loss we had at home with KC in 2011 – he will be gone after after this year. However, if he is competitive and wins 5-6 games or more and seems to be improving as season progresses he will be back. I do fully expect the latter. I think the over under this year is 5-6 wins. However the roster is not totally built so it is still hard to speculate but this is assuming we get an impact OL or DL person in draft and fill in another starter with 3rd round pic.

Regarding how much time RM and DA need to prove themselves it is really condiitonal on incremental improvement in performance and not just wins and loses but overall outlook. DA has to show improvement and he has to have control of locker room at end of season. RM gets this year and next year. If there is not marked improvement he will be gone after 3 years. RM is safe this year even at 2-12.

    NEW POST

  • Football Coach

    KEY year for Allen.

Now that the Al Davis (RIP) Scholarship players are gone, as well as Hue’s guys (such as Palmer), this roster will be much more in line with the program of who the GM and HC are. This is a key year for Allen to show fire, poise, grit, and teaching ability needed to be an NFL HC.

I am not looking for 8+ wins, but we should win more games than last year, even with the team gutted.

More important than wins and losses are these factors:

    - The team’s effort on a DAILY basis. Practices, preparation, and especially the rare and very special NFL game day. If the team plays with intense effort, Allen has them on the right path. If they play like lazy punks, it gets a lot harder to blame the players at this point. It will be on the coach.

    - The defense must show a lot of improvement in discipline, responsibility, tackling and especially effort. There needs to be a weekly improvement in cohesion on the defensive side. Keep it simple with so many new parts! Don’t try to run every defense in the NFL early on and have half the D confused and giving up big plays.

    - The Greg Knapp signing was the 2nd worst move of the post-Al Davis era (after the Carson Palmer trade). If that is fully on Allen, that is a big red flag. You have to know personnel and history. Raiders have always been at their best as a power, play action and big play offense. You can’t become the Denver Broncos/Houston Texans in one year – total change of system. I am glad we are back to our identity, but it needs to stick and at least show a sensible plan.

    - Special teams MUST be vastly improved. We went from a very good special teams squad, to piss poor. With all the new hungry bodies, there is no excuse not to be better in coverage and blocking. We also need to get a lot more from the return game.

    - Allen needs to show a more powerful demeanor. I am sure it was hell at times last year dealing with some of the vastly overpaid semipros. But that is done, now is the time to go to work leading the gritty and hungry to play gritty, hungry, sound and smart. That is our chance to compete, and will be the mark of whether Allen can become a great HC. He needs to check out some Gruden.

    - I agree with a poster above. Allen needs to become a Raider. Screw the Broncos, screw the Saints. YOU ARE A RAIDER. Start smashing around and take no effing prisoners!!

  • RNOraiderFan

Abuse, according to the Draft value rules we could ask for both their 2nd rounders, but we wouldn’t get their 3rd and 5th.
    #3 2200
    #12 1200
    2nd rounders 400-600
    3rd rounders 200-300
    5th 100-150

There seems to be a growing fanbase that thinks it’s ok to lose, take our poison pill. Cross our fingers that it will get better someday. Maybe we get lucky or the law of averages comes into play. Maybe the NFL will show us mercy and gift-wrap games for us the same way they screwed us over before.

To that I say, eff patience. It was never the Raiders way. I guess I have to grit my teeth and accept a rebuilding year, but I do not have to LIKE IT! I’m not turning on the elevator music and humming as we go from defeat to defeat. I can’t understand the logical and pragmatic thinking behind something that so personal and dramatic as Raiders football. Al Davis would never understood that kind of fanbase.

One thing Al Davis could have done better in his later years is taken a lot more public responsibility for what took place in the organization. Obviously, it was his show, but I can’t recall him one time say that the success wasn’t happening because he was making poor decisions.

Anyone on here who is bashing Reggie, I hope you were really laying into Al back at those times. You point of the GM choosing the coach, so the coach being the GM’s responsibility? How many times did Al Davis hire losing coaches?

If you were easy on Al, but hard on Reggie, you are just an Al Davis loyalist and not looking at things objectively.

After AD beat Tits to death with his walker and then fired him…

He’d be brought up on murder charges and called before the labor board for unfairly firing Tits.

The murder trial would result in Al’s acquital. Would only take one real RAIDER fan to hang the jury or vote for justifiable homicide.

5 minutes of the overhead projector would also result in a finding that Tits’ posthumous firing was warranted, and that complaint would be dismissed as well.
