Latest write-thru of ever-changing Raiders moves . . .
The Raiders appeared close to adding Rashad Jennings as a backup to running back Darren McFadden Tuesday as well as the confirming the addition of safety Reggie Smith.
The only announcement made by the club was the signing of cornerback Joselio Hanson, who started five games for the Raiders last season and is the third cornerback added to the roster in the past week.
The NFL Network and CBSsports.com have reported the Raiders are nearing a deal with quarterback Seneca Wallace to join Matt Flynn and Terrelle Pryor.
Jennings has gained 944 yards on 228 carries over three seasons for the Jacksonville Jaguars as the primary backup for Maurice Jones-Drew. He averaged just 2.8 yards per carry (282 yards, 101 carries) in 2012 for a Jacksonville team that went 2-14.
Jennings tweeted Wednesday evening, “It’s official, I’ll be rocking that Black and Silver this yr.’’ and implored Raider Nation “let’s go make it happen.’’
It wasn’t official enough for the Raiders to make an announcement however as they worked on contract details.
Considering McFadden’s propensity for injury _ he’s missed 23 games and has never played a full season _ running back is a position where the club is in need of depth.
Smith tweeted he was returning to California and included an instagram photo of himself working papers with a Raiders insignia. Smith played four seasons with the 49ers before signing with the Carolina Panthers as a free agent, but didn’t make the Panthers roster out of training camp and didn’t play last season.
Hanson, who had five starts for the Raiders last season, joins Tracy Porter and Mike Jenkins in a position group that includes Chimdi Chekwa, Brandian Ross, Phillip Adams and converted running back Taiwan Jones.
Wallace has 17 starts in nine seasons, having played two seasons with the Cleveland Browns after playing seven years with the Seattle Seahawks.
With salary cap space dwindling, the Raiders are at a point where it will be difficult to make many moves for players other than those at or near minimum wage _ Hanson probably qualifies _ unless they restructure McFadden.
The Raiders primary focus is on adding players through the NFL draft, April 25-27.
At present the Raiders have selections in the first (third overall), third and fourth rounds, three in the sixth round and one in the seventh round.
