Raiders bring back Hanson

The Raiders announced the signing of cornerback Joselio Hanson Wednesday, the third cornerback added to the roster in a week.

Hanson was signed as a slot corner by Oakland last season but ended up out of position and starting five games on the outside because of injuries.

The Associated Press first reported Hanson’s return Tuesday, citing his agent, Jeff Nalley.

The Raiders signed cornerback Tracy Harper on April 3 and Mike Jenkins Tuesday to go along with Chimdi Chekwa, Brandian Ross, Phillip Adams and converted running running back Taiwan Jones at corner.

Hanson becomes the third Raiders unrestricted free agent to come back to the team, joining Khalif Barnes, Andre Carter.

With salary cap space dwindling, the Raiders are at a point where it will be difficult to make many moves for players other than those at or near minimum wage _ Hanson probably qualifies _ unless they restructure running back Darren McFadden.

The Raiders primary focus is on adding players through the NFL draft, April 25-27.

At present the Raiders have selections in the first (third overall), third and fourth rounds, three in the sixth round and one in the seventh round.

So we got our secondary and lb’s set. Besides Carter, who’s kind of a part time player, do we have any DT’s or DE’s under contract yet?

Oh brother….Now we have to put up with hearing about how bad Palmer was, or wasn’t, even though he’s long gone and getting baked in AZ! As if the whole “Hue Jackson would’ve…” wasn’t redundant enough! :/

A young Raider fan saw Owner Mark Davis one day and said Mr. Davis, “What is the difference between theory and reality?”

“Well son, the best way to explain this is a practical exercise. Go and ask our General Manager Reggie McKenzie how he plans to return this team to greatness.”

The fan returned and shared, “He said first he wanted his own guys; his own scouting staff, his own coaches, & his own players. He also planned to sign Free Agents to 1 year deals. He closed by saying that you would be patient with the results”

Davis replied, “Now go ask Dennis Allen the same question”

The fan returned and said “Coach Allen explained that although the Zone Blocking Scheme didn’t work in his first season, that he would learn from it and try something new this year. Defensively, his team would be one of the most disciplined in the league. He also said that you would be patient with the results”

The fan then asked, “What does this have to do with theory and reality?”

Mark replied, “It’s simple, in theory our organization is only a couple years away from our 4th Super Bowl title. In reality I’m going to fire them both following this next season.”

    1. KC- Joeckel
    2. JAX- Jordan
    3. AZ- Fisher
    4. PHI- Geno
    5. DET- Ansah
    6. CLE- Milliner
    7. OAK- Johnson
    ————————
I think it is very possible Philly or Det take Johnson. Also Jax could take Fisher and thus make our trade down spot for the right to Lane Johnson.

    ^^^^^^^^^
I think Lane is going to be a Pro Bowl type RT and I think he maybe a servicable LT.

If Raiders trade down to 7, I would rather see them take Star, Werner, Warmack or Cooper.

Nick Saban: NFL coaches are asking for read-option advice

Nick Saban didn’t last long as an NFL head coach, but there are still plenty of NFL coaches who think he has some knowledge they’d like to tap.

Saban, whose Alabama team is the defending NCAA champion, said on ESPN that NFL teams have been beating a path to his office this offseason because they want to brainstorm about how to stop the read-option offense, which was primarily seen in college football until it took off in the NFL last year.

“Several NFL coaches have come to visit this year to say, ‘How do you stop these guys?’ Because they’re not accustomed to seeing that,” Saban said.

Saban says NFL defenses are built around the idea of rushing the quarterback, but a lot of those pass rushers find that mobile quarterbacks who are good at running the read-option can blow right past them.

“That’s a pass-rush oriented league,” Saban said. “People getting up the field to pass rush is what it’s all about because of the type of quarterbacks — the Tom Bradys of the world, Drew Brees, that’s what you’ve got to stop. You’ve got to put pressure on the quarterback. Well, that’s just what you don’t want to do against [read-option quarterbacks]. You have to play on the line of scrimmage just like old option football.”

  • SnBG

I don’t think Pryor will start as much as I like him. It’s more about who’s around ether QB that concerns me. Got to get that O line fixed or you could bring Unitas back from the dead and it still wouldn’t help. The power scheme will help them.
This team would have been 4-12, maybe 5-11 at best no matter what. The west sucked in 2011 so their 8-8 was an illusion.
You can’t judge Reg or Allen under the circumstances to quickly. They need at least 3-4 yrs to be properly judged. What are you going to do, fire them and bring a whole new set of people in to start over. Doesn’t make sense.

  • bcz24

Taiwan will be kept, if for nothing else than the fact that he is the best gunner on our roster.

    ^^^^^^^^^^
The key top neutralizing the effectiveness of the zone read option offense, is to do what the Ravens did in the Super Bowl with the way they used Suggs.

Have him be disciplined on the edge and just erad the QB. Don’t let him get to outside and have a LB stay discplined and fill the gap so the QB doesn’t run for 50-70 yard TD’s.

Pounding the QB and being physical on the QB consistently even when he hands the ball in the read play is good. Stay in his face.
